Date
Hayden
Sitting on the couch humming the lyrics of a new song under my breath I scrolled though Instagram.
"Flirt, flirt, Toot toot,
lets get on the love train,
get on the love train,
hop on the love train with me my dear."
My finger paused over a feed of poorly taken photos. It was of a tv screen, one displaying my and Ocean.
It had been six days since the interview, but Instagram, Twitter and other platforms were still going insane over the whole engagement. They need more content though, I realized.
It was then that the coin dropped. It was date time.
I walked over to the door that led to Oceans little reading nook or whatever. Knocking on the door I called out "Ocean, are you planning of doing anything tonight?"
The door opened and Oceans head popped out with a glare. She shook her head.
"Great." I smirked. "Be ready in something nice for 6."
Without another word, I turned back to my office. Picking up the phone, I dialled the number for my favourite fancy restaurant.
"Hello, how can I help you?" A strong male voice ran though my phone.
"Table for two at six fifteen." I stated.
"Name?"
"Woods. Hayden Woods."
"Wonderful, we look forward to serving you Mr. Woods."
I hung up smiling to myself. Ocean would love the fact that we will be popular.
After getting ready myself I found I was slightly early. To pass the time I sat on the couch, scrolling though Instagram, again.
Ocean came down the stairs in a short green dress with a white cardigan thrown over her shoulders. On her feet she had a pair of heeled sandals. Looking up at her face, I saw no trace of makeup. It surprised me since most girls wear makeup everyday.
Her hair was pulling into a braid that hung over her left shoulder. Seeing her graceful descend the stairs, I felt my heartbeat quicken.
I lifted my phone slightly, taking a photo that my public Insta account would become well aquatinted to.
I watched her descend, realizing that butterflies had magically appeared in my stomach. I just wanted this to be for show, but I had no idea how to fake this.
Sure, I'd been seen with girls all the time, but none has taken my breath away like Ocean did.
It was on the last step that she faltered. Sending her pitching forward towards the ground.
I hadn't realized that I had moved to the bottom of the staircase until that moment. I had no words as I reached out. The world seemed to be moving in slow motion.
I reached my arms out and wrapped them around her short body. Pulling her back into an upright position, the world sped up to real time once more.
We made eye contact and I didn't know what to do.
"Sorry." The word slipped out from in between my lips before I could stop it.
She turned away from me as I released her waist.
"Are you... are you ok?" I stuttered. Why? I had no idea.
She nodded still avoiding looking at me.
It shouldn't have hurt but it did.
I don't like her.
I Don't like her.
I DON'T Like Her!
I found my self chanting these words as we made our way to my car.
Sitting in silence was painful, I wanted to apologize for what I had said and done. I wish I had given her more time for preparation.
I focused on the road. The light that we were stopped at turned green and I turned left though the intersection.
Pulling into the parking lot of The Crown, I parked the car. I got out hurriedly, rushing to open the door for Ocean.
I offered her my arm and I lead her to the doors.
Stepping inside, the familiar smells wafted my nose.
I walked up to the front, asking for my reservation.
The man at the front gave me a semi friendly look before casting his eyes upon my date. His smile seemed to change to a more lustful one. I felt anger seeping into my veins. I suppressed it by wrapping my arm around her shoulder.
"Table for two." I asked trying to keep the venom out of my voice. "Reservations under the name Woods."
"Hayden?" The man asked his voice held and angry edge to it.
I nodded, waiting.
"Right this was miss." He turned to Ocean, before turning and leading us to a table. When he stepped forward to pull out Oceans chair, I stepped in front of him. I pulled her chair out, helping her small frame into the seat.
I took a seat myself before nodding to the man.
"Your waiter will be here shortly."
We sat in silence for a couple unbearable moments before I broke it.
"You look amazing." I spoke softly, trying not to draw much attention to our corner. Ocean looked up at me, her face gaining a slight red tinge. Unless that was just the lighting.
The waiter walked up with a greeting. "Hello, shall I start you off with some drinks?" She was a young girl, probably about 20.
Glancing at me she winked.
"Two waters to start." I averted my eyes to the menu even though I knew what I was ordering.
"Anything to eat or do you need more time?" Her flirtatious acting was rather annoying. Normally I would play along but for some odd reason she disgusted me.
It wasn't like she was even that pretty I found myself thinking. Not compared to Ocean.
No.
Bad Hayden.
Stop thinking like that.
This is fake.
She doesn't like you.
I drifted out of my thoughts, feeling two pairs of eyes on me. One girl had a flirty look. The other girl wore a worried look. She was the one I focused on.
I placed my hand on the table, making a small motion to Ocean.
"I'll get the steak and she'll get the queens pasta."
I had no idea if Ocean would like that, but I went with it.
I felt a soft hand in my own and I glanced down at Ocean, but she avoided my eyes contact.
I sighed softly, wishing to meet her blue eyes once more.
I lifted my phone up so I could get a good photo of her sitting in front of me.
"So uh..." I trailed off unsure of how to talk to her.
She giggled softly and instinctively I taped my phone hoping I had caught a good photo.
"How was your day?"
She gave me a thumbs up, but I could tell it wasn't genuine.
