Hayden
"You don't know?" Nick's voice rang clearly through my phone.
My heart rate accelerated as I tried to remain calm. All the possibilities ran through my head.
"Wait, what happened?" I took a deep breath and listened to what Nick said.
"The got hit, passenger side." Nick started. "The car was totaled. Vira came out ok, but the other driver tried to attack her."
I opened my mouth to speak but got interrupted by him.
"It was a targeted hit. By Tegan."
I balled my free hand into a fist.
"Vira's been worried sick as Ocean was nearly crushed. She had quite some blood on her face. She disappeared before they could help her."
"I haven't heard anything from her." My voice sounded meek. Was Ocean really injured?
"Hey man, I'm sure she would have told..." Nick tried to comfort me.
I heard a key in the lock and instantly lost interest in what Nick was saying.
"I got to go." I said to him as I got up. I hung up the phone before I could hear his response.
I raced to the door to greet Ocean. She kept her head down, letting her hair fall into her face. It wasn't a new thing, but it frustrated me when she did it. I liked seeing her face. The way her eyes lit op when she smiled or the worry that was present when something seemed off. Even when her brows came together when she was angry.
"Hey," I greeted meekly. It felt as though I had forgotten how to speak English.
She shrugged her shoulders at me and tried to walk past me.
Instinctively I reached out to grab her arm. She froze the second I made contact
"I uh heard about the accident." I stuttered out. "Are you ok?" Why do I sound like such an idiot?
I must have missed her response. She pulled her arm from my grasp and started walking away.
"Hey, I asked you question."
Ocean froze in her tracks and slowly nodded.
I think I scared her. Shit. I stepped closer and grabbed her arm again. "Are you sure?" My voice sounded weak like I was ready to cry. Why am I so expressive right now? I'm only ever like this around my parents.
She nodded again and pulled her arm from y grasp. I watched her walk away. She seemed to have a slight limp in her step. So, she was hurt. But why lie to me?
"Ocean, I know your lying." Fuck it. She can't act like this around me.
Again, Ocean stopped moving. She didn't turn or even lift her head. I waited for a response of some sort. The response I got was delayed. A shoulder shrug.
I took a step toward her and opened my mouth to speak only to be interrupted by my phone. The ringing drew my attention away from her for half a second but when I glanced back she had already disappeared down the hallway.
I sighed in frustration as I grabbed my phone off the table and answered.
"Hello, Hayden speaking, how can I help you?"
"Hey, how is Ocean doing?" Nicola's voice ran through the phone.
"She's ok." I answered without thinking. "Wait how do you know about that?"
"Nicola was with them." Jayden's voice rang through the receiver.
"I wasn't Injured though; Ocean was the only one sitting passenger side." Nicola added
"And you know because she told you?" I asked Jayden.
"Well yeah, I had to pick her up from the police station."
My phone nearly slipped from my hand. "I'm sorry, where?"
"The police station." Jayden repeated.
"Why?"
"I beat up Tegan." Nicola stated proudly. "She wanted to hurt Vira to get Nick back, so I beat the shit out of her."
I stared at my phone, trying to take in everything.
"They ruled in my favor saying it was self defense and I was free to go, so Jayden picked me up." I could almost hear Nicola grinning. "But Ocean disappeared, and we were wondering if she was ok."
"Um yeah she's ok, I think." My fear in Nicola had reached a new level.
"The secretary from her dads work said he was taking care of her, so we assumed she was in good hands." Nicola spoke as in the background I heard, "Welcome to McDonalds, what can I get for you?"
"Well, talk to you later, and call Vira, otherwise she'll beat herself up." Nicola hung up.
I sat down in a chair taking time to process what Nicola and Jayden said.
This situation was messed up.
I slowly go tup and made my way to the little library Ocean loved. Raising my hand to knock on the door I hesitated.
The door opened before I could knock. Ocean stood there as startled as I was.
She looked directly up at me, giving me a moment to take in her condition. On her face were multiple cuts four on her forehead, one near her eye, and one on her cheek. She had four small cuts on her neck and a large bruise forming near them. None of them were bleeding anymore luckily.
"Hey," I said softly. "I- um- I just wanted to check on you." Why does she leave me, so tongue tied?
She instantly dropped her gaze and nodded before starting to close the door.
I stuck my foot in the way to stop her.
"Look I know your hurt, at least let me help you." She shrugged and shook her head. Feeling defeated I pulled my foot away and let the door fall shut.
I stood there waiting, hoping for her to change her mind. Nothing.
feeling rejected, I wandered back into the kitchen and grabbed my phone off the counter. Dialing up Vira's number I let it ring.
"Hi Hayden." Vira greeted after three rings.
"Hey, I just wanted to let you know that Ocean's doing ok." I took a deep breath trying to convince myself the same. "She has a couple cuts on her forehead, two on her cheek and some on her neck, but overall, she seems ok."
Vira was silent over the phone for a moment before responding. "That odd."
"What is?" my pulse quickened at her response.
"She only had three on her forehead when I saw her."
The silence that followed was eerie. Vira finally broke it with a casual "Oh well maybe I missed them in the commotion. Let me know if she needs anything."
"Sounds good"
I let the information sink in as I turned back to my work. Vira had the best memory of the group, so for her to be wrong was rare. Clearly Ocean had gotten them from somewhere else.
Unable to focus on my work I glanced the clock. Deciding to call it a night I collected my stuff and tucked it into my bag before heading upstairs.
Light seeped out from underneath Ocean's door, meaning she also had come upstairs.
Turning slowly, I stepped into my own bedroom. Closing the door behind me, I made a mental note to oil the hinges.
Finally laying in bed I stared to the ceiling. Where were the cuts from? Why couldn't I let it go? Maybe Vira hadn't seen them. They weren't from something else. I was trying to convince myself. Finally, I started to drift off.
Half asleep, I heard the creaking of my bedroom door.
Rolling over I saw a petit frame in the doorway. It stayed there, without another sound. I pushed myself up with a yawn and motioned for her to come closer.
Ocean took a couple small steps into the room, letting the door fall closed behind her. She paused and waited for me to do something.
I motioned to her again letting myself fall back into bed.
She walked over to the edge of my bed and sat down slowly. I reached out and grabbed what I thought was her hand. It was not. I awkwardly let go of her elbow as I looked at her. She avoided looking at me, staring instead at the floor.
Finally, I broke the silence. "What's wrong?" my voice was groggy and deeper then normal.
No response. We just existed there in silence for too long.
"If you want to sleep here with me you can." Where that came from I have no idea.
I expected her to get up and leave feeling embarrassed. Not for her to climb into the bed with me and curl up into my chest.
I could feel her tears on my chest as she curled closer. I pressed a kiss to her head and rested my cheek to her hair. I didn't know what was going on in her head, but it was nice that she came to me for comfort.
