Harry POV {four years ago}
"I can't believe you're married." I say to my best friend, Daren.
"It's not a big deal." He grins to himself. I nudge my friend a little and sip my whiskey. "Nice speech by the way."
"Too bad I couldn't mention that I found you passed out on the beach one day on spring vacation and that's how we met." I say with a humorous grin.
"My Dad would've killed me, thanks." Daren squeezes my shoulder.
My eyes land on a girl who's talking to an older women. Her hair is in a bun and the colour of her dress is a navy blue that suits her well. It brings out the curves in her body.
"Who's the girl in the blue dress?" I ask Daren.
"My sister. I introduced you guys already." My friend says in a huff.
"Oh, yeah." I sip my drink and take my eyes off of her. I look to my friend who just got married.
"She's off limits, Harry."
"I'm not interested in anyone, don't worry." I say in all honesty.
"I'm just stating the obvious Harry. She is off limits." A guy in a suit meets her. The wide smile that was once on her lips is gone and she has a weak nervous grin now.
The guy puts his arm around her waist and his fingers dig into her side. "If anything you should watch out for her date." I find myself saying.
"Who? John?" Daren turns around. John's arm has dropped from her.
"If that's his name, yeah." I say. I turn back around as ask the bar tender for another drink.
"He's a good guy, I like him."
"Whatever you say." I murmur. I take a swig of my whiskey that is placed in front of me.
"Thanks for being my best man, Harry." Daren lowers his voice. My eyes glance to him. His face is hinting.
"You don't have to thank me." I say.
"I know but, you know." His brown eyes look away from me and to the beer in his hands.
"Just because my wife died doesn't mean I hate weddings." I say bluntly.
"What number drink are you on?" Daren asks me with a raised eyebrow.
"Five." I let out a sigh. "Why?" I ask.
"Just wondering. I'm going to say hello to my wife. Have fun getting drunk." I smile against my glass and he walks away.
I let out a shrug and sip my drink. It burns its way down my throat.
"Can I get a Pepsi?" A sweet voice asks beside me. My eyes look over my shoulder and I see Daren's sister. Her eyes glance at me then to the bar tender who serves her, her drink.
I swirl around the remaining whiskey in my glass.
"I liked your speech." I hear the women beside me say. I look over at her. "You are my brothers best man, right?"
"Yeah, that's me." I say. I finish off my drink. "And, thanks." Her light hazel eyes meet mine and I look away.
"Is that how you guys actually met?" She asks. Her voice still happy sounding.
"No, he didn't want me to say how actually how we met." I admit making a smile curve on her lips.
"How nice." His sister murmurs. "I'm surprised he found a best man. He's not good with people." She admits to me.
"You should've heard the way he asked me to be his best man. He was a mumbling fuck." His sister laughs causing me to smile softly.
"We can only imagine how he proposed to his wife." I chuckle and shake my head.
"Poor Erica." I murmur making her snicker.
Her boyfriend, John, stands beside her. His arm goes around Daren's sister's waist. This is way of saying they're a thing, like no one knew already. She stiffens under his touch.
"Ready to go upstairs?" John asks her.
"Y-Yeah, sure." She stammers making me question a few things. "Nice talking to you." She says to me.
"You too." I murmur.
They both walk away and she removes his arms that's over her waist and stands a distance away from him.
I didn't get her name.
Daren probably told me it before, but alcohol makes me forget things easily.
Harry POV {present}
I wake up to Eve cuddled into my chest. Her leg is over my waist and her arm is over my stomach.
I smile at my girlfriend and kiss the top of her head.
I don't know when I should ask her to move in. I want to do it soon, of course. But I don't know when or how. Should I just ask when we're at my apartment? When we're at dinner? I don't know.
I kiss her cheek and let out a soft sigh.
Doug starts scratching the door. That's him saying he needs to pee. I slowly get out of Eve's hold and bring the blankets to her chin. I soon open her bedroom door and close it behind me.
As I step out of her room I see her Father exiting his room that's two doors down.
Here my comes my death sentence.
"Don't worry, you're not getting yelled at." Mr. Collins says, reading my face. "This house is old, everything creaks. I heard you walking to Eve's room last night." He chuckles while going downstairs. My face heats. I follow Eve's Dad downstairs. "And I was just testing you."
"Testing me?" I question. My eyebrows furrow.
"I was seeing if you'd listen to me or go sleep in my daughters room." Mr. Collins tells me. Doug starts jumping on my legs and walk over to the coat rack to grab his leash. The dog rolls over on his back and I kneel down and rub his tummy.
"Do you have pee or what?" I ask the dog. His head just goes into his "shoulder", and he has a resting smile. I huff and keep rubbing his stomach.
After a while I stand back up and hang the leash back up where I got it a few minutes ago. Doug goes back upstairs and I shake my head. That made no sense.
"I owe you an apology." I hear Mr. Collins says.
"You don't have to give me one." I tell Eve's Dad.
"I don't want to give you one, but I told Eve I would. I hate apologizing to people, I like being right."
"I understand why you were being a um," I pause.
"A dick?"
"Sure, that." I run my hand through my hair.
"I'm sorry I was acting like a tool." He says.
"It's fine." I say. "Eve told me she told you about um, why her and John broke up." I bring up.
"Yeah." His voice turns low and his eyes look away from me. "If I find out you did what John did to her, I will burn down your office building. And I hope you know I'm not kidding."
"I know you're not." I say timidly. Her Dad is a few inches taller than me and looks like he was in the military. He just gives me the feeling that he was. His face always looks tense unless Eve is around. "And I would never do that to Eve." I add.
"I hope." Mr. Collins says. "She's been through enough." His voice turns low. "Anyways, I'm gonna head to the gym. Make yourself at home, okay?" I nod.
He grabs his water resting on the table in the hallway and leaves his house. Once he leaves I let out a deep breath. He scares me a little, or a lot.
My eyes scan the photos on the pale white walls. A lot of them are of his kids and their families. One that catches my eye is a wedding photo of Mr. Collins and I assume Eve's Mom.
You can see the resemblance between Eve and her Mom. They have the same eyes and facial features. The thing she gets from her Dad is probably her hair. They also have the same sense of humor.
I wonder if Eve and her Mom were close before she died. I'll ask another day.
My eyes look to the photo's closest to my eye level. I see one of a teenage boy playing the piano. A faint smile is on his lips and he's wearing glasses. His hair is a light brown with some curls. He doesn't look like Ethan, Mason, or Daren. I assume it's her other older brother that died. She never talks to me about him. She just told me that he had a drug overdose when he was 16. I think they were close, that's why she doesn't want to talk about it.
I start walking back upstairs and see Doug by Eve's bedroom door. I shake my head with a small chuckle. I pull her door back a little and still see she's sleeping.
I look to the clock on her night stand and it's seven thirty. Breakfast is at nine and we're meeting at a local diner in town.
Doug goes on his bed that's on the floor and lays down. I lay down beside Eve who is laying on her stomach and has her face, facing me. One of her legs is under the blanket, the other is on top.
My fingers run through her curly brown hair and I just smile gently at her. My eyes travel down her body and I see she's wearing her typical boy shorts. These ones are black. Her shirt falls to her back and her body moves a little.
I soon see her hazel eyes open and a light groan leave her mouth. "Go back to bed so I don't feel guilty for sleeping." Eve says while adjusting her pillow.
"It's fine. I'm having a wonderful time staring at your ass." She nudges me and chuckles.
"I got hot last night." My girlfriend yawns.
"I'm not complaining."
"Stop." She laughs. I smile at her. I move closer to her body and drape my arm around her waist. I kiss her forehead and the top of her head.
"I'll wake you up at eight, okay?"
"Okay." Eve yawns. She moves her head to my chest and I smile.
