Epilogue
~from Levi's POV~
After we got out of the park, everything just felt...weird. Like how could we go back to playing gory video games when we'd been in one. That sort of thing.
The first thing I had done was get (y/n) to a hospital. I checked her in, and after she fell asleep, I left.
I know. I'm stupid and irresponsible.
But how was I supposed to deal with the fact that I had accused (y/n), suspected her of murder?
There was no way that she could forgive me. The only reason she let me carry her out was probably because she was barely conscious and fairly delirious.
So, no. I didn't stick around. I left.
I didn't know what to do with myself at first. I quit school, quit my job, just quit...life in general. No, I didn't commit suicide. I just...opted out.
Until Eren came to me with news.
***
"Levi," Eren said. He'd lost weight in both his body and his face. He was narrower, thinner. Mikasa was quieter. "There's something I have to tell you."
I gestured for him to sit. He did.
"The reason I knew that Annie had created the dimension barrier is because I can do that, too. Don't ask me how; it's just something our dads did to us. But...I'm going to create a dimension where we can live outside of all this. Someplace completely different. Mikasa's going with me, and Jean said he'd go, and...I want you to come to."
I just stared at him.
"There's more," he said, looking down. "The way these dimensions work...if someone dies in one dimension, they come back in another. Hanji, Sasha, Marco, Armin, Erwin...they'll all be there too. Even Annie."
That got my attention. "What about...what about (y/n)? Is she coming?"
Eren looked down again, frowning. "The doctors wouldn't let me in."
(Y/n), after leaving the alternate dimension, had severe post-traumatic stress disorder, probably from almost dying. I had never visited her face-to-face except for one time, but I kept checking in with the doctors. Apparently, she had nightmares every night about being buried alive, and none of the doctors could understand why. They had tried to get her to take walks outside, but she'd had a panic attack when she saw the dirt.
Right now, she was in the psych ward, where they were trying to find out what was wrong in her head.
We knew what was wrong.
Jean visited her every week. (Y/n) was okay with him. He made her laugh, and he calmed her down.
I didn't visit anymore. Not since...
***
I opened the door. (Y/n) was lying on her bed, her face dormant and peaceful, until she saw me.
Her eyes widened, and then her mouth opened. "I DIDN'T KILL ANYONE! I SWEAR! I DIDN'T KILL ANYONE!"
Then she yanked out her IV and tried to attack me.
***
(Y/n) got moved into the psych ward after that.
"Well? We have to try," I said, thinking back to the expression she'd made at that time. Fear, pain, betrayal.
My fault, of course. My fault.
"All right," Eren agreed. "But...there's something you should know about my realm. My power is a little bit different from Annie's, after all. My realm is permanent. Once we go there, there's no coming back."
"Fine."
"And something else. It's not automatic, and you don't retain everything you know. We're each reborn into the new realm at different times. We won't remember each other at all. But we will find each other later in our lives, somehow or another."
I thought about it for a long moment. Total oblivion? A new shot at life?
"And there's one more thing. Something will change in all of us. My power will become something else, Mikasa might be a different age, who knows, you might be taller..."
"Watch it, brat."
"A name might change, or someone's gender. But we'll still find each other. So...do you want to do it? With (y/n) too?"
I thought and thought and thought. "Fine," I said at last. "Do it."
Eren nodded and bit his hand.
"What the-"
And then it was all gone.
~from (y/n)'s POV~
You knew that you had messed up. Levi stopped coming. But you hadn't meant to scare him off. Sometimes, you had good days.
It wasn't all the time.
Levi came on a bad day, when the shadows seemed darker and the sun seemed fake, like you were still inside the barrier, and then all of a sudden, you couldn't breathe as the dirt fell in droves on top of your head, and the doctor's and the nurses ran in and shoved tubes down your throats and pumped oxygen into your lungs.
You hated them.
Jean was okay. He didn't make the shadows darker or the sun seem fake. He was nice, gentle. He didn't ask you what you remembered, or what your dreams were about, or who you screamed that you didn't kill.
He was nice.
But he wasn't Levi.
~from Narrator's POV~
Everyone was reborn into a realm very different from our own. There were things called Titans, for one, and a series of walls.
Levi was reborn first, but his height never surpassed his original.
The others were reborn around the same time, all with no memory of a prior life. Still, their lives became intertwined. Eren and Mikasa were reunited, and they later met up with all of their friends.
All but one.
(Y/n) had changed more than the rest of them, including her name...and a few other things.
But they all came together years later in a division of the army, the Scouts.
And then a new adventure began.
To continue reading, go to my profile and read "Catching a Captain."
A/N: thanks all for reading :) it's been a lot of fun. Not to mention that I basically wrote the second half of this all in one week.
Thanks for all the votes & comments; I read all of them.
Also, I adapted the ending of the epilogue so it will transfer seamlessly into the beginning of a different AOT fan fiction I'm working on, Catching a Captain. I'll leave you to guess which character (y/n) becomes, if you so choose to read on.
Thanks again for your support. It's been really fun :) and wow, I can't believe it's over so fast >_>
All right, I'll wrap this up before I get all annoyingly sentimental.
