No Strings Attached
"So we're staying here for how long?" You raised an eyebrow at Izo.
He stood by your seated form, fixing his tousled hair as he looked over your shoulder at the book in your hands. You were sitting on the deck with Marco, both of you had been spending the day reading and now the sun was on its way to setting. A few people had come back to the ship for the night while others were planning on staying out all night, spending their money on the fun things in life.
"Pops says about a week. We all have been needing to blow off some steam." Izo said, moving on to pulling out a tube of lipstick from a hidden pocket to fix his smudged makeup. It wasn't hard to guess what he had been up to not all that long ago.
"I guess if we're here that long I might go check some things out eventually." You said thoughtfully, half paying attention to the conversation and half reading your book.
"What kinds of things?" Marco and Izo asked at the same time. They wore disturbingly similar expressions that suggested they were far too curious about what you'd be up to on an island like this.
"Get your minds out of the gutter." You huffed. "I was thinking of seeing if there were any shops around here that sold some cute clothes. I don't have a whole ton of girly stuff."
They both relaxed, like they were worried about you suggesting going to a brothel yourself.
"Oh! I think I did see a place that sells some Kimonos!" Izo lit up. "You'd look adorable in one."
"That'd be nice, but I think they're too long for my tail."
"Not if we get you a short one~ I think they'd suit you better anyway." He was very invested in this.
"I guess I could check those out...."
"Marco I'm stealing her for a bit." Izo was grinning ear to ear, something he rarely did.
"Okay?" Marco tilted his head questioningly. "Have fun you two-yoi."
"Wait, we're going right now?" You yelped as Izo closed your book and tossed it to Marco before grabbing you by the hand and bringing you to your feet.
"Of course! I'm not busy now and you'll need someone to tag along to make sure you get something nice. And who better to go kimono shopping with than me?"
He had a point, the man was from Wano after all. Out of everyone on the ship, he had the best eye for his traditional garb.
"We'll be back to show you what we found later Marco!" He called back to his friend as he led you off the ship.
At least you had company with you while you were off the ship, that made things easy for you. Any other pirate that was inland eyed you like a piece of meat but the stares didn't last long. As soon as they saw Izo, they'd look away, afraid of offending such an important member of the Whitebeard pirates.
He led you by the hand through the streets and further into town until you were pushing through the many pirates filling the empty spaces. Laughter came from every corner, occasionally interrupted by the sounds of gruff, loud conversations and fights. This place was full of life in a way no normal place could ever hope to copy.
"Here we go!" Izo stopped in front of a small, unassuming storefront.
It was completely different from everything else surrounding it with large windows showing off brightly colored clothes, just like the kinds he wore all the time. The outside was a bit rough, in dire need of a fresh coat of paint. But once you went inside, it couldn't have been more inviting. Everything was well lit and there was the faint smell of perfume lingering in the air.
A worker tried to approach you but Izo quickly waved them away. "We're fine, I'll let you know when we find something."
And just like that they scampered away, watching you two keenly from behind their front counter.
"Okay." Izo twisted you around, spinning you so he could get a full 360°. "We need something that allows for your tail and while we're at it, it wouldn't hurt to find something that matches it. You're quite colorful (Y/n)."
"I can't help it." You huffed, moving your tail to your front so you could hug it defensively.
"There's nothing wrong with it." He tapped a finger to his painted lips and began searching through the store. "Black is always a safe choice but white would work too, maybe orange.
"What about something purple?" You asked, running your fingers along a violet kimono covered in a koi motif.
"Technically that'd match, but I was thinking something more subtle. Your eyes are another thing to keep in mind...."
You'd never thought so much about matching what you wore to your features before and figured it'd be better to let Izo wander by himself until he found something he thought would work. You trusted him to find something good. In the mean time, you browsed through the options on your own. Almost everything was soft to the touch and extremely vibrant. You liked the ones with fun designs on them, like the ones with fish or flowers. There was even one covered in sushi, that made you giggle.
After wandering through for a while, you heard a gasp from across the store. Izo must have found something he liked.
"Come here (Y/n)!" Sure enough, he called you over.
You weaved through the clothing stands and your eyes landed on the kimono in his hands. The fabric looked silky and was mainly black. Thick bands of gold wrapped around the long sleeves, neck, and hem of it. A pale cream sash hung around its middle and was tied into a loose, large bow on the back. You'd say it was very fancy if it wasn't for the golden-yellow pineapples covering it.
"What do you think?" Izo asked as he held it up to you, checking to see if it'd fit.
"It's cute, but why the pineapples?"
"Oh I just thought it'd look nice on you." He hummed with a smile tugging at his lips. "Want to try it on?"
"Sure." You couldn't say no with how excited he looked to have you in it. Plus it was along the lines of what you were looking for in clothes.
He motioned for the staff that had tried to help earlier and they quickly came back over, all smiles. "Found something?"
"Yes and she needs help trying it on."
"Of course!"
You were glad the staff was female if you were going to need help with this. She ushered you towards the changing rooms while Izo waited with a satisfied grin on his face. He figured he'd already found the perfect thing for you.
When he was out of view and you were nudged into a room big enough for you and the staff, she was quick in getting you changed. You had to admit, for a woman to work so calmly in a pirate infested island was impressive. She was polite and helpful the whole time, teaching you how to properly wear a kimono while she dressed you easily.
When you were done, she twisted you around to check yourself out in the mirror and you were definitely happy with what you saw. The colors were simple enough that they matched you well. In fact, you had a feeling it was picked to match the spots lining your tail. The hem was short, falling a little past halfway down your thighs. This was definitely something you'd have to be a little more conscious of around the ship. No bending over of any kind.
But besides the length, you couldn't find anything about it you didn't like. The sash for the bow rested just below your breasts, accentuating them nicely and giving you more of a leggy look. The sleeves brushed along your fingertips and as you twisted and turned to get the full view in the mirror, you decided you loved it all. The tiny pineapples brought out the gold in your eyes and even if you weren't totally sure about it before, you were glad you tried it on.
When you stepped out to show Izo, he positively radiated excitement. "That's perfect."
"Yeah, I think I like it." You did a little twirl so he could get the full effect.
"Tell you what, I'll get this for you, along with some shoes to match." He looked towards the staff who'd helped you change when he said the second part, hinting at them to find something for your feet besides what you came in with.
They scampered off deeper into the store and out of sight, dead set on getting something suitable. You liked the work ethic.
"I think I have some money on me." You shook your head and started going through your pants pockets. The clothes you came in with were neatly folded up in your arms. "Let me change back and I can take care of it."
"No, I insist." He took the pile of clothes away and tucked them under an arm. "I want to get it for you."
"Are you sure?"
"Of course."
There was no arguing with him on this. In fact, you were noticing that was a common theme with many of the men on the Whitebeard crew. It was their way no matter what you did, the only difference was how much arguing was involved.
"Okay." You gave in and smiled. "I really appreciate it."
"I just need you to wear it out." He said casually.
"...Like to the ship?"
"Yes."
"Okay?" That didn't seem like it'd be a big deal but apparently it was for him. He caught on to your confusion and ruffled your hair lightly.
"I'm sure everyone would like to see how cute you look and it's a nice bonus letting them know how much you like what I picked out for you."
That got you to roll your eyes. The contest of who the favorite "big brother" should be. It was something new that was beginning to have more men join in each day. On a ship that used to be only full of men, they took great joy in finally having a female around to treat like family. This was Izo's first attempt to join in on earning your affection.
It was then that the staff that helped you dress came back with an armful of simple sandals that matched your sash's color perfectly.
"I didn't get your size." She huffed in explanation. "But one of these pairs should fit if you like them."
Her efforts were beyond commendable. You apologized profusely for not giving her something to work with and told her they were perfect after you found a pair that fit. Izo payed like he said he would and you were soon back out on the streets, your old clothes stuffed inside a bag the woman gave you.
It was dark out now, the paths only lit by the occasional storefront light. There were less people wandering about and you assumed many of them had either turned in or gone to the bars to drink before calling it a night.
"So what're your plans for the night (Y/n)?"
"Hm?" You realized you were zoning out as you walked, engrossed in the now much quieter atmosphere and the feeling of wearing pretty new clothes. "Oh, I don't have any."
"No," He chuckled. "I mean your sleeping arrangements."
"Does everyone know about this mornings fiasco?"
"Just about."
You puffed your cheeks out in annoyance. "I'm gonna try bunking with Thatch like usual and hope it works this time I guess."
"It's never good to force things that don't work."
"Are you suggesting I keep sleeping outside?"
"No, I'm suggesting doing what works. If that means staying in someone else's room, then maybe you should do just that."
"Temporarily."
He raised an eyebrow at you.
"Stay in someone else's room temporarily." You reminded him. The goal was to get you accustomed to staying inside to the point that you could stay in your own room in the future. Staying with one of the guys indefinitely would be a pain for everyone involved.
"Right, that's what I meant." He shrugged it off before lighting up. "There's a bookstore here (Y/n). Never thought I'd see something like that in a place like this."
You grinned as you noticed it was still open. "Marco mentioned wanting something new, they might have something good."
"Let's check it out then. We can head back afterwards."
The bookstore was enough to distract you from the odd questions and evening spent with your friend. It had managed to pass as a friendly outing, much to Izo's relief.
----
"You guys are...back....." Ace started off strong but his eyes widened and he trailed off as he caught sight of you and Izo boarding the ship.
"We weren't gone that long." You said as you took the small stack of books you'd bought from Izo. He was nice enough to carry them back to the ship for you.
When you turned back towards Ace, you missed the smug smirk Izo sent him.
"I see you went shopping." He said, ignoring your comment.
"Yeah! We found a bookstore and I got some stuff for Marco."
"Was that your idea?"
"Well, Izo saw the store but I was already planning on getting him something when I found one."
"And the, uh, outfit?"
"That was all Izo." You walked past him, searching for Marco to show him what you'd found for him.
"How considerate...."
"Right?" You smiled at him, flashing your petite canines. "I'm going to go find Marco, I'll catch up with you later."
"See ya fangs." Ace chuckled before turning to glare at Izo. "You're a damn cheat."
His friend's smile only widened. "I thought we were just betting. There were no rules saying we couldn't speed things up."
They continued to argue but you never caught any of it, too oblivious to the bets or Izo's attempts at pushing you and Marco closer.
(A/n)
I did some quick research on types of kimonos and originally thought a short kimono was called a haori, turns out I was wrong. So while it was haori before, I've edited it to just kimono. If anyone who helped correct me rereads this, I appreciate the help! It was much needed~
