Final: I Hate That I Can't Have You
Normal
The boy juggled the ball twice before shooting a goal. The soccer ball bounced on the grass once before touching the net and stopping completely.
It was Sunday so no practice for Fairy Tail. Natsu just needed to shoot some balls to keep his cool and release some of his anger. He knew that he were to stay home alone, it would be a lot worst for him than it already is.
Natsu watched the ball for a moment longer, keeping himself as composed as possible when in truth he could break down any minute now. The song in his ears blasting at the lowest volume due to his sensitive hearing.
Two pair of familiar golden cleats walked in his direction. He dreaded looking up right then and there but his heart made him. Natsu came face to face with the familiar blonde hair, the familiar deadly smile that made him feel light and fluffy. One ear bud in her own right ear.
"Hey Natsu," she was wearing her practice jersey. "Mind if I join you?"
I pulled out one ear bud, "If you can keep up then sure thing Luce."
He turned and left her right away. It was only yesterday when he was so close to telling her how he felt about her. It was only yesterday did his heart break the second she left him alone on the dance floor.
After seeing Lisanna kiss Natsu on the cheek, Lucy left the scene not wanting to stay any longer. She couldn't stay any longer afraid that if she did, her heart couldn't handle it. Some of her friends followed to make sure she was alright, to be there if she were to cry but Lucy never did any of that. She just sat at one of the tables in the garage and ate anything in sight.
Lucy didn't even look at Natsu once until she left with Erza. To make sure their teammate didn't do anything stupid alone, Erza and Levy spent the night at her house. They left earlier and Lucy thought that being locked up all day isn't good for her health. So she left to get some shooting in. When the striker saw the familiar pink hair on the field, it took her every ounce of bravery to talk to him.
The two Fairy Tail players took turns shooting the ball, setting up 1-2 combos, etc. Both avoiding to speak to the other whenever necessary. Minutes turned into hours before Lucy stopped and hunched over to catch her breath.
Natsu walked over to where his water was, whistled to catch her attention and threw her the water. Lucy happily accepted the gesture as she made her way over to where he's sitting on the field.
"How was the rest of the party?" She asked sitting down so she's facing Salamander.
"I fell asleep in Jellal's room," he admitted. "I needed it."
"Oh," she sighed. "You didn't drink did you?"
He looked at the blonde, "I'll have you know I'm a very responsible adult."
"Funny," Lucy giggled. "For someone so responsible, I could smell the hint of smoke in your breath."
Natsu quickly check his breath. It's true he smoked a cigarette earlier because he was stressed. It's not a basic hobby of his but he would smoke when he needed to clear his mind.
The soft sound of a song played in his ears. He closed his eyes, of all two hundred songs, this one plays here and now.
"Hey Luce," Natsu drew a breath.
"What's up?"
He didn't say anything immediately, the lyrics of the song still singing in his ears.
I can no longer say anything to you
"What's wrong, Natsu?" Lucy asked her friend.
"Lucy," he started again.
I've become unable to ask now
"Lucy," his voice cracked. "Lucy."
"What is it Natsu?"
Without the usual grumbling
"Let's just be best friends, Lucy," the request was almost a beg coming out of the boy's mouth. He didn't know if he was begging Lucy or himself to just accept things as they are right now.
Lucy's mouth just curved into a smile.
Still smiling that polite smile
If his heart wasn't broken before, it's definitely shattering now.
I didn't see the sadness that passed your eyes
"Of course, Natsu," she told him quietly. "Let's be the best of friends."
Natsu almost reached out for her. Her normal brown eyes slowly watering but she turned away.
Lucy got to her feet, "I have to go. Dinner."
"Lucy," Natsu grabbed her wrist before she could walk away.
When I see you with your back turned to me, the time love clearly took
"Lucy," he mumbled again.
She didn't look at him once, worrying him beyond end.
"Lucy," was all he managed again.
By myself I am unable to hold your heart
"Lucy," it took all of Natsu's energy to push the last remaining words out of his mouth.
"I'm getting married. I'm sorry."
Lucy didn't say anything right away. She just stood there absorbing the news.
Even the words of apology
Although I'm as sorry as this
"Congratulations Natsu," Lucy finally looked at his eyes. "I'm really happy for you."
Seeing her smile at him was too painful. His hand slowly released hers and he let it drop to the floor. Lucy looked at a different spot on the ground still accepting the information. Natsu was trying his best to figure out how to confront her.
"If you're hungry later," Lucy suddenly said. "I'm making your favorite. Just swing by in about an hour or so and everything will be done."
"Eh?"
Natsu watched her slowly. The smile on her face this time was sincere, not forced. She was happy for him, he knew that much.
Lucy was ready to move on, if he was.
"Uh yeah, I'll be there."
Lucy turned and started heading towards the exit of the field. Natsu sat back on his butt, head in hands.
When I see your back turned to me, the time that love clearly took
Natsu could hear the door of the locker room open than close.
Now I can see it, too.
Lucy's back rest against the metal door.
Like a time of separation
Natsu grabbed his shirt, the location of his injured heart. His grip tightened as his teeth gritted in utter frustrstion.
I saw it coming
Lucy slid down the door slowly her tired legs unable to hold her up any longer.
Being a part of me (like this)
Natsu finally released the cry he's held in. He finally roared to to the heavens his hurt his frustration of losing the one girl he had ever loved.
He roared again at the top of his lungs, "I just want to be with Lucy! Because I love her. I love Lucy Heartfilia! Is that too much to ask?!"
I didn't know you would be
Lucy covered her mouth with the hand holding her team mark. The tears rolling down her cheeks were too much for her. She was broken, she can't stop crying mixing in with the cries of Natsu Dragneel the boy she had fallen head over heels for.
Lucy closed her eyes, trying to stop her dying body that's slowly falling apart. Only one thought going through her mind:
I love you. I love you so damn much... Natsu Dragneel... but I hate that I can't have you to myself.
