Whirlwind
Codie and Sun anxiously enter their home, the former shutting the door behind them while Sun wrings his hands. "Do you want to talk to him?" Codie asks softly, her hand on Sun's arm.
"I-I don't know..." Sun admits. He's scared for his brother. He's never been this upset and angry before. He'd get mad. He'd get upset. But to this extent? And with all that Monty said to him? He just doesn't understand what happened.
But Codie, Codie doesn't know their past at all. She couldn't understand, and as much as Sun wants her to, he should talk to his brother alone for now.
"Hey," she breaks him out of staring off into the distance. Sun looks down into her green eyes, wishing he could disappear into them forever. "It's alright. Moonie needs you, okay? I'll be one room over."
If Sun could cry, he would. Her immense understanding, even if she doesn't have any clue of the situation, yet still reassuring him with all the kindness in the world, is outstanding. The bot sniffs, nodding. She nods as well and quietly walks off, closing her door without making a sound.
So, with slight hesitation that turns into resolve, Sun gently opens the door, one hand on the knob, the other on the side. "Moon?" When he opens it all the way, he gasps, "Oh Moonie..." at the sight of all the ripped papers.
Their room is dark but Sunny doesn't see his hulking animatronic of a brother anywhere. He decides to keep the light off as he walks in, knowing it's more soothing for Moon. He turns the corner and peers into their over-sized closet, cooing sadly at the sight of his other half curled up in the corner.
"Moonie..." He approaches lightly, bending down to be level with him. Moon heard him, of course, but didn't turn, keeping his face toward the wall. He doesn't want to see his brother, that's the last person he wants to see!
He wouldn't be able to look him in the eyes and tell him that he's a failure of a brother and a killer. Sun persists, though, laying his hand over Moon's shoulder. He then crouches down into a criss-cross apple sauce pose.
"Moonie...what Monty said back there...I may not understand it but...it shouldn't matter anymore." 'Right?' Sunny thinks as an afterthought.
Moon growls. How dare he say it shouldn't matter!? Those children's lives shouldn't matter?! Those employees that got hurt shouldn't matter? He tells himself to calm down. Sunny doesn't know about that stuff. He made sure of it.
Finally, Moon opens his mouth, audibly taking a faux deep breath before releasing static. "It does matter, Sun. Everything Monty said was...it was true... okay? I made sure you wouldn't find out..."
"That...you hurt people? I-I knew about that, Moonie..."
"Not just that, Sun..." Moon realizes his brother only knows about the employees he's hurt on purpose, not under the control of the virus. "Those guys...they deserved it...they hurt you and I don't regret what I did to them."
"Then...what happened?" Sun inquires tenderly, leaning forward a bit more to try and see his face. Moon turns away.
"Sun..." he whispers, "you...saw me under the influence of the virus, right?" Gosh, of course he did. He will never forget it. He was so scared for his other half, for the children, the adults around them. But never of Moon, no, no, Sun could never be scared of his brother.
He did his best to be optimistic, talking to him jovially in their headspace even if Moon never responded anymore. He remembered being so lonely when Moon cut himself off and blocked Sun out whenever he fronted.
Children weren't the fondest of Moon, but ever since he changed, it got worse. Children would scream and cry when it was nap time. There would be more and more complaints. Attendance would be low. Soon enough, management shut down nap time all together.
He didn't understand it was a virus at first, thought something was wrong with Moon, thought if he gave him some space, he'd feel better. He never did. Sun remembers thinking it got worse and worse as the days went by.
Sun finally understood what was happening when Moon hurt a child. It was during nap time, before it was shut down, and he was putting children to bed forcefully. Scaring them into their cots. If one misbehaved, they'd be grabbed roughly and haphazardly shoved back into bed.
One kid refused to listen. She was hiding in the play structure, hands over her mouth to stifle her noises. When Moon did a headcount, he came up one short. It's like a wire snapped inside him. His vision was red and he was irrefutably angry. It's what the virus did. It hurt him. It made him mad. It made him unable to care for the children. He was trapped in his own mind. Being made to do unspeakable things. He couldn't stop it. He couldn't control it. He couldn't control his own body.
The little girl was wheeled off in a stretcher. Sun came back confused. Looking around as kids were screaming, crying, and running around in a panic. Adults yelled at him. Pointing, shouting angrily. He didn't understand why. Moon shut him out, he couldn't see.
The Superstar Daycare was shut down early that day; Sun futilely trying to keep everything under control as the parents demanded Moon be scrapped. Management came and closed the big metal shutters before turning on Sun, asking what had happened.
He didn't know. But he couldn't tell them that. He couldn't tell them Moon wasn't acting right. They'd be sent to parts and service. They hated it there. They would be scrapped if they found out about Moon's virus. No, Sun had to protect himself and his brother.
The solar bot had to explain to the higher ups about the naughty child. At least, that's what he suspected happened. Moon was always a stickler for rules about nap time, he could only hope a child broke those rules and the virus heightened Moon's aggressiveness.
He downplayed it to the best of his abilities, praying to the stars that management wouldn't do anything drastic. He supposed, at the time, preventing lights-out was the best case scenario. Sun was told, sternly, to not let the lights turn off. If Moon got out, they could be scrapped if an incident like this happened again. So, Sun did just that, bordering on aggressive and manic if someone tried to flip the switch.
And then Gregory slid down the slide.
"That wasn't even the worst of it, Sunny. I-gosh I lured children, Sun! I lured them away. I blocked you out so you wouldn't see but, she made me lure them. I don't know what she did to them after, but...they were probably killed, Sunny. I led them to their death!"
Sun frowns, unable to form words. He...he didn't know he did that. He thought he was just aggressive and violent. Vanny...Vanny made him bring her children? Sun makes a static noise of concern and shock.
"You...that wasn't you. The virus...it takes you over. I saw the Glamrocks. That wasn't you Moon. The whole time I knew it wasn't you. That thing? That was using your body? Your face? Your voice? That was not you. That was the virus."
"No!" Moon cuts him off, turning to him harshly, shoving his hand away. "It was me! I was still there. Still aware. I was so angry. I didn't want to do what I did but it doesn't change the fact that I still did those things! I couldn't help it! Even if I tried to stop myself, Sun, Vanny would only click her button and command me to do it again. And again. And again."
Sun's lips wobble. He can't stand to see Moon like this.
"It was only when Gregory arrived... He was so hard to catch. Of course, he had Freddy on his side. I never figured out how he avoided the virus but... Gregory freed Vanessa and then Vanessa freed us. It felt as if a weight was lifted off my shoulders. The virus, it made me feel so...heavy. My mind was constantly foggy. That fog was lifted, but my sins were still there. They would crawl up my endoskeleton. I can't escape it Sun. I tried so hard...I really did..." Moon's voice cracks as he shoves his face into his knees, unable to look his brother in the eyes.
Sun wants to hug him so bad. Wrap him in his arms and protect him from everything as Moon did for him. But he needs to know. "Moon...why wasn't....why wasn't I taken over?"
"I took it all," he says simply. He doesn't want to explain any more, but Sun deserves to know at this point. "I was doing my security rounds when I felt it. I saw it in our systems. It wanted you. Probably because you would be best suited to lure the kids away. I took it without hesitation, blocking you out before it could latch onto your AI."
"M-Moon..." Sun whispers sorrowfully. He sniffs and rubs his eyes. "I..." Sun looks down, noticing liquid on his knuckles. Moon turns when he hears Sun gasp.
He gasps, too. Sun's eyes are leaking copious amounts of liquid. "Sunny, you're-you're crying..." He grabs hold of his other half's face, wiping at the apparent tears coming down. "Why...how...?" Moon asks.
Sun shrugs his shoulder, choking back a sob as more fluid trickles down his crescent cheeks. He's overwhelmed. His brother. His other half. He took the virus to protect him. He risked his AI to save him. And he was none the wiser.
His processors hit him with alerts and warnings. He's overheating but he can't find it in him to care. He's crying but he shouldn't be physically able to. Moon stares at him in concern. He rubs his cool hands up and down Sun's ever warming arms.
ALERT!
WARNING!
SYSTEM OVERHEATING!
SYSTEM SHUTTING DOWN!
Sun's eyes go blank and he slumps onto Moon. "S-Sun! Sun!?" Moon shakes him sporadically but he doesn't power back on. His body continues to heat up. "Not good, not good! CODIE!" He yells loudly, his voice box stuttering.
The ginger runs out of her room at the call, almost slipping on the carpet as she turns into the large closet doorway. Her eyes widen at the sight of Sunny unresponsive with suspicious liquid solidifying on his face.
"Wh-what happened?!" she cries, scared out of her mind.
"He shut down! He-he overheated! Help me get him into the bath tub!" Codie nods and runs to the bathroom without a second thought. Moon stands up, holding Sun over his shoulder. He walks him to the bathroom. Codie shoves the curtain out of the way and helps lift Sunny's feet over the tub wall.
Moon lays him in it. He points to the faucet. "Fill it up, cold and shallow," he deftly commands. Codie does so, making sure the water is ice cold and plugging the drain. Moon steps away to grab a wash rag. He kneels down next to the human and dips the rag into the water. He squeezes it and brings it up to Sun's face.
Codie watches as Moon gently wipes Sunny's cheeks, the brownish liquid that was caked on washing away. "What is that stuff? Where'd it come from?" she asks softly, reaching her hand into the freezing water to grip the bot's lifeless hand.
"He...he was crying... It wasn't tears, not the human kind. I...I didn't know we could cry. I don't know how he did it, he just started...crying..." Moon trails off, unsure of how to describe it. Codie nods, understanding.
'He must have been so overwhelmed with emotions, the poor thing.' Codie tsks sadly, squeezing his hand. "We'll figure it out. We can ask Freddy or-or Vanessa. But, it's a good thing, right?" She leans forward to take a look at Moon's face. "You want to be able to express your emotions. You can laugh, get angry, it only makes sense that you can cry."
"Not if it overheats our systems..." Moon mumbles, tossing the dirty rag on the side of the tub.
"We can make it so it doesn't; see what we can do for you two. Crying makes you more human, and it's wonderful that you can do so." Moon hums with a nod. He does want to be able to cry. "Are...you okay now, though? I wish I could help but..." Codie looks down self consciously and rubs her arm with her free hand.
"Oh Starlight..." Moon pats her thigh. "You help by being you. By being my friend. By being there for me..." He tilts her chin up and bores his red eyes into her green ones. "There's no one I'd rather have next to me. I know Sun feels the same."
Codie looks away, her cheeks tinged red. She rubs her eyes, feeling the wetness growing. She scoots forward on her knees, placing herself to the side of Moon. She squeaks in surprise when he drags her up into his lap. He doesn't say anything as he wraps his arms around her, placing his faceplate onto her head, burying himself in her hair. He needs this. He needs her.
Codie hugs him back, burying her face into his chest. He smells of lavender. It calms her immensely and she relaxes into him with a sigh.
They stay like this, Moon occasionally rubbing her back, as they wait for Sun to restart.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Even after Codie falls asleep, Moon stays where he is, just taking comfort with the human in his lap. He hears Sun's fans click on and come to life, breaking his reverie. Though he wants to mourn the inevitable loss of closeness with Codie, Moon is relieved that his brother is coming back online, so to speak.
He decides to stand up, not before lifting the drain plug, and holds Codie with one arm underneath her as he cradles her to his chest. She stirs but doesn't wake as Sun's optics blink on. He looks around for a moment before his blurry vision lands on his brother.
"Moon?" Sun sits up just as the water fully disappears into the drain. He pats his hand on the side of his head, rays retracting as he does, and his vision becomes clear. "Why are you holding Codie like that?" He realizes he's wet and cold. "And why am I in the bathtub?"
Moon quirks an eye. "One, because I can and she's adorable. Two, you overheated so I had to cool you down somehow. Thank the stars we're pretty resilient to water..."
Sun covers his mouth and giggles. He takes a snapshot of his two favorite people and stands up. Moon hands him a towel and he dries himself off thoroughly. "So I..." the solar bot mutters, "I really shut down from crying?" That's the last thing he remembers, that is. His error logs don't tell him much.
"Mmm..." Moon affirms, sitting on the couch, human still against him. "Jealous?" He smirks up at his brother after seeing him stare.
Very. "No, just wondering how long I was out for, for her to fall asleep on you."
Moon continues to smirk. He's good at reading his brother. "Ah, not too long, I suppose. I hope she's been getting enough sleep. She hasn't come to me for a bit."
"I can help her sleep, too, you know." Sun harrumphs, taking a seat next to him while dramatically crossing his arms. Moon rolls his eyes and turns the TV on with a sigh.
Sun continues to pout for a good fifteen minutes before Moon throws his head back. "Would you like to hold her?"
Sun's mood changes instantaneously. He uncrosses his arms and turns excitably towards Moon, reaching his hands out and making a grabby motion. "Yesyesyes!" He bounces in his seat.
"You're like a five year old, I swear..." Moon relents and gently hands Codie over as if she was an infant. The ginger mumbles in her sleep but thankfully doesn't wake. When Sun shifts her to comfortably lie against his chest, he happily nuzzles her. Moon softens at the love in his eyes. His brother is ruined.
And, Moon admits, so is he.
~~~~~~~~~~
Codie awakens to an overly-affectionate Sun on the couch with a cartoon playing on the TV while Moon is in the kitchen cooking dinner, the smell making her salivate.
Sun grumbled as she pushed her way out of his arms, almost, almost, returning to his lap at the pitiful whine he made but was able to make it to the kitchen. She leans into Moon's personal space to sniff the food. Unknowingly, the food was spicy, so Codie inhaled pure heat and spice. She gags at the burn, turning around to cough so she doesn't do so on the food.
Moon chuckles and keeps cooking. "Don't smell unknown substances, Starlight..."
Codie pinches her nose as her eyes water. "It smelled good from the couch, you jerk! What are you making that's that spicy!"
"It's not even-!" Moon sighs, "It's just some mildly spicy chicken rolls."
"Mild?" Codie quirks a brow, "Whatever is in that pan is like, red with spices. That ain't mild." Sun comes up behind the human, laughing at the two's exchange. He places his hands on her shoulders and rests his head, sans the bottom rays, on top of hers.
"It does look a bit...hot, Moonie..." He takes her side, eyeing the red substance in the pan. Their olfactory sensors don't burn to spicy smells like a human nose would, so neither would know if anything is super hot.
"I pride myself with my cooking skills. It won't be that spicy." Moon spins back around with a huff and stirs his chicken that cooks in the pan.
Codie looks up to Sun, "Should I be scared?" His blank eyes stare down at her and he smiles.
"Probably."
~~~~~~~~~
It was hot.
But not as hot as Codie expected, so there's that. At least she was able to finish her plate. Was it good? Hell yeah it was, Moon's cooking doesn't disappoint. But was it enjoyable? No, her nose is still running.
The three chill on the couch later in the evening. Codie watches the brothers play Stardew as she fiddles on her phone. She was able to convince them to stay up and game when she whined about not being tired. Moon allows it since the nap she took earlier allowed him to hold her like he did.
Codie gasps, standing up. "No way!" The two pause their game and look up at her. "I got the job!" Sun and Moon share a look. They're going to congratulate her, of course they are, but they aren't going to like it.
They wish she would stay home with them, she doesn't need to work. But they also know this is important to her. "That's wonderful, Sunshine!" Sun goes first, smiling at her.
"Congrats, Stardrop, when do you start?" Moon inquires, setting his controller down. Sun copies him, wanting to know her schedule immediately.
"Oh, psh, I don't know, guys! The email said to contact Lois, the manager, to set one up since I can't work just yet because of my surgery." The ginger sits back down as she explains, going over her email again.
"Good. More time before she leaves us!" Sun whines to Moon.
"She's not leaving us, you dunce. Remember what I said about jobs?"
Sun's eyes widen. "Oh! Yes, you're right.... Still don't like it."
"Yeah well, don't tell her that." The two tune back in as Codie walks off. Moon questions where she's off to.
"Going to reply to the email, I'll be right back! Keep playing!" she calls back, heading to her computer. When Codie sits down, she cracks her knuckles and starts to type a reply. She finishes and hits send before thinking about earlier. She needs to contact Vanessa about upgrading the boys.
She shoots the blond a text to see if she can chat with the three of them soon and returns to the couch. "Hey, Dewdrop! Me and Moon got our first chicken!" Sun excitably tells the human, pointing to the brown chicken his character is standing next to. Codie snorts at the name. Of course its name is Chica.
"Cute." She sits back down, throwing her legs over Sun with her back up against Moon's side. With no complaints from either, she asks, "Hey, so who works on you guys? Like, upgrades, repairs, et cetera?"
Both bot's eyes narrow. They have someone, yes, but the jesters hate getting worked on. In fact, they outright refuse anything being done with their bodies except for when they split their AIs. It's been so long since they had any proper upgrades, the last being back in the plex when workers made their face able to emote.
"We...have a guy, so to say. The others know more than us, though," Moon admits, staring hard at the game.
"Okay," she shrugs, "I texted Ness, so." The two mentally sigh in relief as she drops the subject, being none the wiser. Midnight rolls around and Codie begins to yawn, gaining Moon's attention.
"Bedtime?" he hums. The ginger only pouts and shakes her head. "You're already up later than you're supposed to." She leers up at him, making the chatty motion with her hand as he talks. He looks down, unimpressed with a slight tug at his lips.
Sun looks over now, too, having gone to sleep in Stardew and ending the night. The brother's set their remotes down and turn everything off. Codie groans while throwing her head back, stretching her body down and sliding off the couch as she does so.
The two watch her with amusement and when she finally reaches the carpeted floor, she lies flat, staring up at the ceiling. "Only if I can sleep with you two tonight," she demands, arms extended into the air. Sun and Moon look at each other, surprised at the request. They surely don't want to miss out on an opportunity like this.
"Of course, Sunbite!" Sun happily agrees, bending over the couch to pat her head but pats her face instead, missing the top of her head completely. She splutters and defends herself.
"Good!" The human finally bats away Sun's large hand, the silicon material sticking to her sweaty hands half the time. Her chest goes up and down as she tries to breathe normally again. Moon makes a noise as he stands up, his joints clicking.
"Alright, up and at em', Star. Let's go to bed." He starts to walk around the couch but doesn't hear any movement, so he stops. Sun passes him and goes to their room. "Hmmm?" he questions, staring at her unmoving form still lying on the ground.
"I don't wanna!" she whines with a smile. She wants food. Yeah, french fries sound good right about now. "I'm hungryyy!"
"It's late," Moon glares. "You mustn't eat right before bed or you'll feel sick."
"Yeah? And who told you that? The muffin man?" Codie sasses, sitting up. The bot blushes.
"Nobody! I was programmed with all the knowledge for bedtime and healthy routines." He puts his hands on his hips proudly.
"Yeah." Codie deadpans, "For toddlers." Moon's eyes shoot open in shock. He starts to splutter and defend himself. Codie laughs, patting his leg on the way by before going to the bathroom.
For a last ditch effort to save himself, Moon calls out, "There isn't even anything open this late!"
~~~~~~~~~~
Moon grumbles as he tightens his hands around the steering wheel as Codie wiggles in the passenger seat with excitement. He cannot believe he let himself be persuaded by a tiny human. She didn't even have to try as hard as she did, Moon, and Sun for that matter, would have done anything if she just asked.
And she can never know that, so he had to let her beg a little instead of giving in right away. He's still a little grouchy about even letting her get to him, anyways, but if he looks on the bright side, he'd see this is nice, quality time alone with her.
So, without letting her see, Moon lets a smile sit on his face as he drives them to McDonald's for french fries at 12:24 at night. He pulls into the drive through, thankful for the lack of cars. "You just want fries?" His red eyes bore into her green ones.
"Mhm...no wait! Fries and a Mcflurry! So I can dip em'!" Now this is where Moon knows he should probably tell her ice cream this late isn't the best, but with that sparkle in her eye how can he deny her? He goes ahead and places the order, smiling when Codie side hugs him from her seat.
They pull up the window and Codie pulls out her card, handing it to Moon. When the worker opens her window, she instinctively squeaks and slams it shut upon seeing the hulking animatronic in a car. His bright red eyes piercing into her very soul.
Moon rolls his eyes but gives her, what he hopes, is a non-threatening smile. "Um-heh, hello. Your total is five sixty-eight." Moon hands her the card, still smiling but showing off his sharp teeth with it. The lady gulps, not wanting to take the card, when she notices the human in the passenger seat.
She gasps, many different scenarios playing through her head. Is that girl okay? Is she in danger? Does she know this robot? She needs to go get her manager! "Can I get the receipt?" She startles out of her stupor at Moon's deep voice.
"Sh-sure sure! But ummm, I'm out of receipt paper so it'll be just a moment!" the brunette worker sweats out, nodding her head rapidly to reassure the AI. Moon just shrugs. Figures.
She scampers away, crying out for her boss. "Andrew!" Said man turns to listen to his worker. Casey, the brunette's name, starts going on about all she thinks is happening with the animatronic outside. Andrew believes her and advises her to call the police, secretly loving the drama.
"Sven!" Andrew walks up to the food handler at the second window. "Cause a distraction, make excuses for why food is slow."
Sven, a tall lanky blonde kid, looks on confused as Moon and Codie drive up after finally getting his receipt. "You would think they have nothing else to do at night and make sure their receipt paper is full," Codie remarks snidely.
Sven's blue eyes widen at the sight of the moon man animatronic. "Holy shit," he whispers under his breath. He opens the window. "Uh, sorry, ice cream machine is messing up, it might be a minute to get it fixed for your Mcflurry." Codie huffs, crossing her arms.
She leans over to whisper to Moon, "Man, what gives!" The lunar bot glares at nothing in particular. He has a hunch.
The sound of sirens from afar catches the two friends'attention. The cop car pulling into the parking lot really captures their attention. The police vehicle stops and an officer exits, walking right up to them. Another man joins them along with a younger female.
The first window employee, Moon notices.
Codie frowns as she listens to the three speak to one another for a moment before the cop turns his attention to her. "Ma'am are you in any danger?" At the question, Moon growls lowly, red eyes burning holes into the three humans.
"No!" Codie bites her tongue at saying a snide remark. "We're just out to get a snack!"
The officer swirls his hand around, "So you know this...individual?"
Grinding her teeth, she answers, "Yes...sir. Moon is my friend." The man wipes his nose and turns to the lunar bot.
"And you. Do you have any identification on you?" Moon has to blink to himself for a moment. Did this man just ask him what he thinks he asked?
His left eye twitches as both eye lights go out. "No. The city barely recognizes us as citizens, you think they would have made us ID's?"
"And you're driving? Without a license?" the cop snips.
"We were allowed driving tests. We passed but didn't get any identification to prove we were able to." He looks down to Codie. "I'm surprised they even let us drive in the first place..." he mumbles.
"Look!" Codie speaks up, unbuckling to sit up better. "I don't know why you were called," she looks to the brunette girl, "but we were just getting food and going home. Moon and I are friends, and we aren't doing anything wrong."
"Yeah, well I'm taking it down to the precinct. Without-" Codie cuts him off, outraged.
"What! Why?!"
"It has no ID, no license... Do you have yours on you?"
"No-"
"For all I know, it's dangerous. Now, exit the vehicle for me." Moon holds back a snarl, reaching for the door handle. Codie grabs his arm, worry evident in her eyes.
"Moon! You can't go to jail! You didn't do anything!" He gives her a gentle smile, putting his hand on top of hers.
"It's alright, Starlight. It'll get worse if I don't do as he says." Moon gets out and stands at full height, causing the other three humans to take a step back or two with wide eyes. With wariness, the officer takes Moon to his cruiser and he gets into the back peacefully, bending his body awkwardly.
Codie tears up, left aghast as the cop takes her best friend away. The manager and Casey watch her. Casey goes back inside and Andrew approaches Codie. "Do you need a ride home, ma'am?" Codie recoils from the man's sleazy smile as he puts a hand on her shoulder.
She steps back harshly. "Don't touch me!" Hurriedly, she runs to the driver side and starts up the convertible. Before she can drive off, Sven opens the window.
He hands her a bag. "Here's your fry and Mcflurry." Angrily, she snatches it and drives off, feeling sick to her stomach and no longer hungry.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In tears, the ginger calls Vanessa, praying she picks up this late. She doesn't. Codie tries again. "Please, please." She glances at Sun's charging body. He's too low to wake up and if she does, he wouldn't sit long enough to charge more to help.
"Huh, hello?" Vanessa's voice comes through deep and groggy.
"Ness!" Codie cries, "Moon was taken to jail! I don't know what to do! I'm freaking out!" Saying it out loud, that her friend was taken for no reason, causes Codie to begin hyperventilating. It's silent on the other end and the girl panics thinking she ended it on accident.
"Wait-wait, hold on, Moon got arrested?!" The utter shock in Vanessa's voice is apparent.
"Not arrested...I think? But he was taken in because he had no ID or license or whatever! It's not his fault he doesn't have one!" Codie rambles, throwing her hand up in frustration.
"I know, I know, we're pushing on getting them registered as citizens. But, where were you? Why were there police?"
"We were at McDonald's getting a snack and some bi- worker called the police on us!" This was all her fault, wasn't it? Codie rubs her eyes, making them red and irritated. "I just...what if I have to bail him out? I don't have that kind of money!"
"You don't have to post bail... We'll figure it out. First thing in the morning, I'll meet you at the station, okay?" Vanessa rubs at her eyes, too, tired and trying to keep them open.
"Morning?! No! No, we need to go right now! We can't leave him there alone!" Codie rushes out, ready to jump up and drive over there in a moments notice.
"Codie..." Vanessa sighs, "It's two in the morning. We wouldn't be able to do anything for him tonight anyways. Just...go to bed and I'll pick you up in the morning." Codie sniffles and doesn't reply, not knowing what else to say.
She sighs in defeat and tells her friend goodnight. Throwing her phone onto the bed, she flops near Sun, curling up on her side next to him. She grabs hold of his stiff hand and falls asleep on top of the covers.
