Chapter 3: Savior
"Tarey! Wait!" My mom called to me as I ran ahead of her into the building.
School ended and nobody was at home to look after me. Meaning mom had to bring me with her to work!
My mom's a psychiatrist.
She works in this mental institution for kids.
Ever since my mom and dad got divorced two months ago, my mom watches over me after school.
On the weekends my nan looks after me.
My mom always let me talk to the kids that were here.
They were mostly around my age.
I walked past the front desk and greeted the receptionists.
They knew who I was and let me through.
As I walked through the halls I found a huge metal door. Shut.
'Isn't this door normally open?' I thought.
After trying to open the door, I decided to knock.
"Hello? Is anyone in there?" I asked.
There was a minute of silence before I heard a timid voice reply.
"Yes?" It replied quietly.
"Hi! I'm Tarey! What's your name?" I asked.
"I am Gemma." She replied numbly.
"Well hi Gemma. Why are you closed off in that box?" I asked.
But before she could answer, my mom did.
"Gemma is new here. She just got here on Saturday actually. She has a split personality disorder" my mom told me.
"Oh. So you are like doubble the fun in one container?!" I exclamed excitedly.
"Well aparently on side is really depressed and the other is easily excitable." My mother said looking at the clipboard she held in the crook of her right arm.
"You... think I'm... 'doubble the fun'?" She asked.
"Obviously! With two different personalities things will always be interesting!" I cheered, smiling eventhough I knew she couldn't see me through the metal.
There was a moment of silence.
Then I heard a loud bang.
"Gemma! Are you okay?" I shouted at the wall.
"Gemma just fell. Gemma is happy that the boy in the other side of the door thinks Gemma is 'doubble the fun'!" She cheered.
Her once timid and numb voice, now filled with boldness and excitability.
"Did your personality switch?" I asked.
"Yes! When Gemma gets hurt, Gemma changes. Sometimes Gemma doesn't remember what happened when Gemma wasn't Gemma. But Gemma has pain on gemma's arm after Gemma wakes up!... Normally." She replied enthusiastically.
"Mom can I see her?" I asked.
"No. I'm sorry, but when she switches personalities, she could be a danger to herself and others." Mom answered.
"But she is happy now! And she said that she only switches personality when she gets hurt! All I have to do is keep her from getting hurt." I whinned.
"I'm sorry. But no. I can't allow it."
"Why not! Everyone has a right to freedom. I will break her out of I have to."
"To let her out we would have to go through many procedures. And if you tried to break her out, you would most likely fail; then you would be banned from here and I would end up fired." My mother stated.
"Will she always be trapped in there?" I asked.
"Maybe..."
.
After hearing those words 9 years ago, Gemma and I became really close.
We spoke through the wall almost every day, and I started to come with my mom to work on Saturday's and Sunday's just to spend more time with her.
And now it was time!
I was so excited I couldnt stay on the ground; causing me to hop all the way to the metal room. My mom, hot on my heels.
I knocked three times, as usual, and waited for a response.
"Tee?" Gemma asked.
"Yes Gems! It's me!" I cheered.
"Why are you so happy?" Gemma asked, cuoriously.
"They approved Gems!" I cheered.
"Really?!" She asked.
"Yes! They are allowing you to come with me to Ophiuchus High!" I confirmed.
"That means... Gemma gets to come out of the metal room and see you?!" She questioned.
A couple of years ago she would have still referred to others in third person. But now she knows how to use the word 'you'.
She still speaks about herself in third person though...
It's a quirk that I think is really cute.
"Yes! I get to see you too!" I cheered.
"Alright. Calm down. For a 14 and 15 year-old you're awfully excitable." She chided playfully.
"I get to see Gems for the first time! Why wouldn't I be excited?" I cheered.
"Gemma feels the same way!" Gems replied.
"Okay. I'm opening the door now. But Tarey, you have to promise that you will take extreme care of Gemma. You are being given an extrieme responsibility over her. So if anything happens, it's your responsibility." My mom informed me.
"I promise I will take care of her. Because that's what best friends do. Care for each other." I swore.
My mom nodded her head and then pulled off the key from around her neck, and placed it into the lock.
I heard the door click as it unlocked, and I stood in the doorway as it opened.
Before me was Gemma.
She had chestnut brown hair, that fell flat onto her shoulders, and dazzling sky blue eyes that twinkled in excitement.
She was beautiful.
She is beautiful.
