Chapter 4: Watch Out District 8
Selena Gomez - District 2
~
I wait patiently for my family and friends to come and say their goodbyes. I sit on a red velvet chair, and rub my palms across it. It soothes me.
Very soon, my mother and little sister come in. If you were wondering, no. I don't have a dad. They sit on the couch next to me, and my mom starts stroking my cheek. I stare deeply into the galaxy that are her eyes.
Moments later she speaks. "Selena, I want you to be careful in there. You know-" I interrupt her.
"You don't need to tell me how to do this, mom. I'm ready for whatever the arena throws at me. After all I've spent my entire life mastering four weapons and learning what plants to eat and what not to eat. I can handle myself. You don't need to worry." I say, stroking my sister Astra's hair.
She sniffs. "I know. Just after losing your father I-" she chokes up, and starts to cry. I pull Astra onto my lap and scoot closer to my mom, putting my arm around her. I was fifteen when he died fighting against rebelling District 8 teenagers. He was just doing what he was ordered to, and the armed assholes shot him. I swear when I get my hands on this years District 8 tributes - that's not the point.
"Mom it's okay. Like I said before, I can handle myself. You have nothing to worry about." She nods and hugs me.
The peacekeepers knock on the door, signaling it's time for my family to go. I kiss both my mother and Astra on the cheek and then they leave, leaving me in an uncomfortable silence.
It's been so quiet, that I can hear someone coming up the stairs, I can hear the doorknob turning, and I can hear the oh-so familiar voice saying "Hey," to me.
I stand up and let the strong arms of my boyfriend, Magnis, enclose around me. Any anger, worry, and any other negative emotions I had wash away, leaving me with the peace he gives me.
"Hi," I respond to him. I snuggle my face into his shirt and smell his cologne for what seems the last time for a while. He cups my face in his hands and kisses me. When we break apart, we look into each others eyes and he says, "I'll see you soon." matter of factly.
We wrap our arms around each other again, and just stand their hugging, me listening to the slow beat of his heart.
A part of my heart is ripped away when the peacekeepers tell him it's time to go.
