jiae smiled down at the rest from haechan before dropping her phone into her bag and followed hyeyeong into the library. she could feel the heat of incoming blush ticking her cheeks in contrast of the cold winter air, and she hoped the pink looked like natural flush.
"oh shit, there he is." hyeyeong suddenly stopped, causing jiae to release a short gasp as she bumped into the older. "ouch, man!"
"shut up, oh my god, okay, how do i look? is my hair okay? i feel like it's messy... am i talking too mu—" jiae clasped her hands over hyeyeong's mouth, muffling the rest of her words.
it was funny seeing her usually calm and kept-together friend get riled up over a guy, but at the same time, jiae was there to help get hyeyeong out of her comfort zone.
placing both hands on the older's shoulders, jiae gently steered her into the cute check-out boy's direction. "i won't lie to you, there's no plan." she didn't have to see hyeyeong's face to know she was about to protest, and quickly continued. "just go over there and ask for his number."
"won't it be weird to walk up there without something to buy?" hyeyeong pointed out with a slight shake in her voice.
nodding, jiae glanced around the store until her eyes fell on a popular book she'd been interested in reading. reaching forward, she grabbed the book and pushed it into hyeyeong's hands with a cheesy smile. "i'll reimburse you."
hyeyeong hesitated for a moment, her gaze flicking between her friend and the book now in her hands. finally, shoulders sagging in nervous defeat, the older pulled the book to her chest and made her way toward the short check-out line.
jiae could only clasp her hands together as she silently hoped all went well for hyeyeong. she didn't talk about herself much, so the fact that she mentioned a cute guy at all meant she must have liked him a lot.
not even a minute later, it was hyeyeong's turn. the exchange was only a few seconds long, but jiae held her breath throughout the entire conversation.
hyeyeong waved the check out boy a quick goodbye and made her way back toward her colorful-haired friend with a blank expression. pouting her lips, jiae reached a hand out toward the seemingly upset girl. "what happened? do i need to call my hitman connection?"
hyeyeong scoffed. "you don't have a hitman connection."
"do you really want to find out?"
chuckling, the older took a seat in front of jiae a hesitated a moment before dropping the book onto the table with a quiet thud. when she didn't say anything, jiae suspiciously examined the recently purchased item. she flipped the cover open and gasped so loudly that heads turned in their direction, causing hyeyeong to shuffle in panic.
forcing herself to calm down, jiae practically jittered in her seat as she wiggled an excited finger at the phone number written on the inside cover of the book. "is that what i think it is?"
"he figured i wouldn't lose it this way," hyeyeong explained with blush on her cheeks, showing jiae her phone next, where the contact was already saved.
jiae raised a brow as she read the name, but her smile never faltered. "daniel? he's a foreigner?"
hyeyeong's face was practically hidden as she brought her sleeve-covered hands up. "he was born here but went to school in europe. i guess the name stuck? i don't know, i didn't ask."
as she spoke, jiae could feel her face aching as her smile spread. excitement was an understatement. "so, you got his number and his name. did you guys talk about anything else?"
"his shift ends at 4..."
"hye!" jiae shouted before slapping a hand over her own mouth to remind herself to be quiet. "hye. he wants you. like, he wants to go on a date!"
hyeyeong shook her head. "no. no way. i'm not waiting until his shift ends... isn't that creepy?"
checking the time on her phone, jiae realized it was nearly that time and giddily kicked her feet beneath the table. "it's 3:26 right now, hye. what's thirty minutes?"
knowing there was no point in arguing, hyeyeong signed and reached into her bag to grab her wallet. "fine. but if we're waiting, i don't want to look creepy. what do you want from the cafe?"
jiae

BYE HAECHAN!!!!
"so," jiae started after swallowing the last bit of the chocolate muffin hye bought her. "what are we doing for soskuke's birthday?"
she watched with a laugh as hyeyeong's face paled. "oh shit," she said as she checked the date on her phone, "it's already the eleventh?" sosuke's birthday was on the thirteenth of january, but unlike miles, he hated it. at least, he pretended to.
every year, sosuke avoided his birthday like the plague. he never mentioned it or made plans, and when the group would surprise him, he'd act like he wasn't excited. however, one new years (after drinking too much), he confessed to jiae that their surprises for him made his birthday one of his favorite days of the year. after that, jiae promised herself to do something special for him every year.
"i was thinking we could take him shopping," jiae suggested. "he mentioned something about new shoes, but you know how he is with clothing gifts."
hyeyeong released a soft chuckle and nodded. the only person sosuke "allowed" to buy him shoes was miles. "it's a guy thing," they'd said, as if that was everything they needed to say for it to make sense.
the two girls planned their evening out until the clock changed to 4, when daniel's shift ended. jiae wished hyeyeong good luck on her date and decided to walk home, a smile on her face and a battle strategy forming in her mind.
