"you're going to love it."

"you've said that so much, i'm afraid i'll hate it."

jiae scoffed a small laugh as she dragged hyeyeong back to her apartment. they'd gone out to eat lunch as a group for her birthday, obnoxiously singing along with the staff to embarrass her.

using the key hyeyeong had given her, jiae unlocked the birthday girl's door and led her into the apartment. "surprise!"

soyi, miles, and yuxi left the restaurant separately so that they could decorate. black and purple streamers draped across the ceiling, matching balloons floating from their tied spot on the back of the chair at the head of the table.

there was a cake as well. not homemade, but the three younger friends in the group had put their hearts into the sprinkle decor.

jiae glanced over her shoulder to find hyeyeong smiling fondly at the effort the group put into their decorations. miles, yuxi, and soyi stood around the table wearing matching party hats and blowing air into streamers.

"happy birthday!"

hyeyeong shook her head as she looked around, her wide smile meeting her eyes as she did so. "you didn't have to go all out for me... i'm only turning twenty-three."

"twenty-three and stunning!" miles cheered as he brought the short birthday girl into a hug, receiving a glare when he threatened to ruffle her hair.

the party went mostly as planned. the other two oh siblings appeared, completing the triplet trio, and presents were distributed. hyeyeong laughed after opening miles's perfectly package present, which was, indeed, a sponge.

they were getting to the final gifts when a sharp whine came from one. knowing what it was, sosuke began "coughing" over the puppy sounds, but hyeyeong's brows sat narrowed on her face.

"what was that? you guys didn't kidnap hyunsuk, did you?"

soyi snorted. "puh-lease. i get enough of hyunsuk when i bring dishes into the kitchen. if i saw him more than that, i may overdose on gloom."

hyeyeong's laugh was cut off when the box hiding behind sosuke and jiae jolted forward. they watched in partial fear as the birthday girl pulled her mom look. "you two. tell me what you're hiding before i go over there and see for myself."

jiae raised her hands in surrender. "okay, okay! we wanted to save this for last, but since you've obviously lost interested in sosuke's pot and pan set..." she winced when sosuke elbowed her in the ribs, but scooted out of the way for hyeyeong to approach the box.

"don't shake it, just take the lid off!" yuxi warned from her spot on a barstool in the kitchen.

hesitant, hyeyeong lifted the lid off of the rather large present box, and gasped. "holy shit."

she didn't move for a few seconds, and right when jiae was about to ask if everything was okay, she found herself tackled to the ground in a hug. "hair, hair, hair—" she repeated until hyeyeong moved her arm, apologizing for accidentally pulling jiae's hair.

"how did you... i'm... is that...?" the eldest rambled, her gaze flicking between her friends and the puppy with his nose poking over the walls of the present box.

seongyeol cooed at the puppy, carefully cradling him in his arms as seongwoo watched from a safe distance away.

"welcome home, tomato!" miles and yuxi cheered. hyeyeong viciously wiped her eyes with her sleeves, and jiae pouted at her friends tears. "aww, hye, we didn't mean to make you cry,"

hyeyeong sniffled. "i'm not crying! i got confetti in my eye..."

as the others crowded around tomato, hyeyeong pulled jiae to the side. "seriously," she began, eyes soft with worry. "i thought there was another family? how did you guys manage this?"

jiae couldn't hide her smile as she leaned closer and whispered, "don't forget you have friends with connections, okay?" straightening, she raised her voice back to normal and smiled. "i mean, other than me and my hitmen brethren, of course."

"oh, yeah. of course." hyeyeong rolled her eyes before bringing jiae in for one last hug. "thank you. i mean it."

jiae hugged her back. "i know you do. and you're welcome. don't forget i'd do anything for you."

"i love you, ji."

"i love you too, hye."
