Chapter 1

Cedarpaw limped his way into the Shadowclan camp, his mentor, Icestripe, tailing him closely. "Head straight to the medicine cat's den, and don't you EVER do that again, understand?" he hissed in the apprentice's ear.

"Alright, yes sir, got it," Cedarpaw muttered, not really paying attention.

"I mean it, Cedarpaw. You need to learn to not act so rashly. Now get going before your paw gets worse."

Muttering to himself, Cedarpaw obeyed his mentor's command and trudged off to the medicine cat's den. He made eye contact with a small light brown tabby she-cat and lifted his hurt paw with a pained smile.

"Oh, great Starclan, not again! What did you do this time?" She rushed over to him and gave him a fierce sniff-over, her fur bristling with irritation.

He smirked and snorted, winking at the young she-cat. "You make it sound like I did something bad. I was chasing a squirrel and tripped over a root. It's nothing bad. Not anything like last time. Ha! That was hilarious."

The tabby rolled her eyes sarcastically. "Yeah, yeah. Whatever you say fur-brain. I still can't believe you thought it was a good idea to jump off a tree. That was the most horrid moon I've ever experienced. You better not get hurt like that again, I don't think I could stand staying in the same den as you for as long as I live."

Cedarpaw gasped and recoiled in fake offense. "Goldenberry! I thought you were the 'only one who could handle my foxdung'? How could you?!"

Goldenberry held back a snort of laughter as she held her herbs firmly in her teeth. "Hold still, mousebrain," she mumbled through her full mouth.

"You're no fun anymore," he sighed and held out his paw, a mischievous glint still apparent in his eyes. He watched the she-cat work out of the corner of his eye. She didn't answer. "Aw, come on! Nothing?"

She snorted, amused. "I've become immune to your tricks. You can't make me crack, ya' stupid hedgehog." She finished wrapping his paw and set it down carefully before playfully pushing her paws into his face. "Now, get outta here. And don't do anything to put too much pressure on it for the rest of the day. I don't want to have to deal with you a second time today, you're tiring enough."

Cedarpaw lowered his head and looked up at the she-cat with false sorrow. "Oh, okay. I see how it is." He turned away and walked out of the medicine cat den. Just as he reached the exit, he turned back and gave her a quick smirk and a wink before speeding off towards his friends.

"Didn't you hear me!? I said be careful on your foot, mousebrain!" Goldenberry hopelessly yelled after him, suppressing a laugh. She sighed to herself and returned to sorting herbs.
