Chapter 4

C.J.'s P.O.V.

I have discovered something. I hate Harry. I hate him with a passion. I mean I've finally admitted to myself that I like him, but I hate him even more.

Seriously, what idiot decides to leave with no warning, especially if he was so set on making a girl go out with him? I don't understand boys.

"I know that look," my mom said, sitting down next to me.

I blinked and sat up, rubbing my eyes. It was Thanksgiving and I was at my parents for food.

"What look?" I asked.

"The I-hate-someone-so-much- look," my mother said, helping herself to my M&M's.

"I do not have an I-hate-someone-so-much look," I said indignantly.

"Yes you do," Mom said. "You wore it all throughout high school."

I tried to come up with an argument but couldn't. I did hate everyone at my high school. They were all jocks whose brains altogether could have filled an eggcup and slutty girls whose goal in life was to sleep with every guy in school.

"So who do you hate now?" my mother asked.

"No one," I said too quickly.

My mother's eyes narrowed and she said, "There's a guy. Spill."

"Well," I said carefully. "If a guy flirted with you and followed you around 24/7 and always hung out with you, would he like you?"

"Absolutely," Mom said instantly. "That's so sweet," she cooed."Do you have a guy following you around?"

I ignored her last comment. "What if he left?" I asked hesitantly.

Mom blinked. "What do you mean, left?"

"What if the guy in question, the one who flirted with you and followed you around suddenly left and didn't come back?" I questioned, chomping on an M&M.

Mom blinked. "Well," she said slowly. "I guess it depends."

"On what?" I asked.

"Did he tell you he was leaving? Do you know why he left? And how long has he been gone?" she raid-fired questions at me.

"No, no, and two months," I sighed, running a hand through my hair.

"Well, then I'd say he really didn't care at all," my mom said. "Unless he did it on purpose."

My head snapped up. "What do you mean he did it on purpose?"

"He might have left to see if you really missed him or not," Mom said matter-of-factly. "He might do it to see how much you really care."

"But why would he do that to someone?" I croaked. "Why would he hurt the girl?"

My mom shrugged. "Who knows, guys are weird. Ask your dad."

I recoiled. "I am not talking to Dad about guys."

Mom laughed and ruffled my hair. "This is all hypothetical, right?" she looked suddenly serious.

"Yeah, mom," I said, lying straight through my teeth. "Totally hypothetical."

"Food's ready!" Dad yelled.

"Let's go eat your dad's world famous stuffing, shall we?" Mom asked, a smile breaking across her face.

I could feel an identical one spreading across mine. "Yeah, I'm hungry."

My mom led me into the kitchen, ready for some good food.

Harry's P.O.V.

"Mum!" I said, delighted.

As I gave her a quick hug, a huge smile spread across my face. I haven't seen her in forever. She had come to watch our concert, then was going back home. We were almost done with this tour. Only one more month, then I could go home. Home...

"What's that look?" Mum asked, surveying me.

"What look?" I asked, startled.

"Your homesick look," she said.

"I don't have a homesick look," I said, startled.

"Yes, you do," Mum said. "You wear it every time you Skype with me."

I tried to come up with an argument, but couldn't. I did miss home terribly when I was gone, but it was part of my job. And I was gone more than I was home. I should be used to it after three years.

"I have to go take a shower," I attempted to say lightly, but I think my mum knew something was wrong. "I'll talk to you in like fifteen minutes."

I ran off and jumped in the shower, taking a quick one. The boys needed to take showers too, and I had my mum to talk to. After changing into something comfortable, I ran out where my mum was waiting.

"Alright, I'm ready," I said, coming to a halt in front of her.

"Let's talk," my mum sat on a chair and I sat on the floor like a small child. "Something's bothering you."

Call it mother's intuition, I still think that she can read my mind sometimes.

"Nothing's bothering me," I said too quickly.

My mum's eyes narrowed. "Is there a girl?" she cooed.

"No!" I said, throwing up my hands.

Mum cocked an eyebrow, staring at me, daring me to say no again.

"Well," I began carefully. "What if a guy really liked a girl and the guy flirted with a girl and hung out with her a lot, do you think the girl would know that the guy liked her?"

"Depends," Mum shrugged. "Some girls are really oblivious. But if the guy was obvious, I would think so."

"And what if the boy suddenly left?" I asked.

"What do you mean, left?" Mum asked.

"Well, what if the flirty boy suddenly left the girl, without any warning, and she had no idea where he went?" I questioned carefully.

Mum's eyes narrowed. "Why?"

"Just wondering," I said hastily.

"Well, I would think the girl would be angry," Mum sighed. "She'd probably never want to see him again."

My shoulders slumped. "Thanks Mum."

"Why, Harold, you didn't do this to a girl, did you?" my mum questioned, surveying me.

"No," I lied, trying to avoid eye contact.

Mum promptly slapped me upside the head.

"Ow!" I complained, holding my head. "What was that for?"

"You do not treat woman like that, you hear?" she said sternly.

"Yes Mum," I said meekly.

This woman has a certain hold over me. I don't know what it is.

"So did you like the concert?" I asked, changing the subject.

My mum's eyes lit up. "Yes, Harry, it was wonderful. You all are so talented-"

I nodded and let her go on, smiling at she spoke. Even though I was twenty now, I still loved having my mum visit me, especially since she missed out on the last four years of my life.

"Harry! We're going out to dinner!" Liam yelled, beckoning me over.

I took my mum's hand and pulled her up. We walked over to the rest of the lads and their families, who were all excited to be with us. My stomach rumbled. I was ready for some good food.
