Chapter 10
CJ's P.O.V.
I knocked on Harry's door, exhausted after my shift at Tool's. I had dealt with several assholes today and all I wanted to do was get Faith and go home. I knocked again, hearing Harry scramble to answer the door.
"Hello?" he asked as the door opened with a click.
"Hey Harry, can I get Faith?" I asked, tiredness clearly outlining my tone.
"Um," Harry glanced behind him. "She's sleeping."
Oh right, it's like 11:30 at night, I thought. She should be asleep.
"Oh," I said awkwardly. "Should I just go or..." I trailed off.
"Um," Harry said again, which seemed to start every sentence of his, "You can come in if you want."
"Oh," I said and I'm pretty sure my face was bright red. "Um, if that's okay."
"Come in," Harry said, showing his charm, letting me in his home.
"Thanks," I said awkwardly, looking around. "Nice place."
"Thanks," Harry said, putting his hands in his pockets. There was a slightly awkward pause as we stood facing each other. "Do you want something to drink?" Harry offered.
"No thanks," I answered. "I had some at work."
"How was your shift?" Harry asked, heading toward the kitchen, gesturing for me to follow.
"It was the usual," I said, taking a seat in an island stool next to Harry. "Some asshole grabbed my butt, I got alcohol thrown at me, yelled at..."
"Why don't you just quit?" Harry inquired.
"I wish," I said. "But I need the money. Ever since my hours got cut at Cindy's and I got Faith, I've needed extra money."
"I could-" Harry cut himself off, glancing around nervously.
"You could what?" I asked.
"Nothing," Harry said quickly.
"Okay," I said, bewildered. Glancing around his apartment, I noticed that Harry had a really nice place. It looked expensive. "What was it you said you did again?" I asked curiously. It might have been my imagination, but I thought I saw Harry pale.
"Um, I," he stuttered. "Um... Faith's up," he said suddenly and shot off.
I followed him and sure enough, Faith was sitting up on Harry's bed, yawning. When she saw me, her eyes popped open.
"Mommy's here!" she cheered, trying to untangle herself from the comforter.
Harry chuckled. "Yeah, Mommy's here."
Faith got free and launched herself at me and I caught her as she hugged me tight.
"Where were you Mommy?" she asked.
"I was working," I answered, bopping her on the nose.
"Why were you working?" Faith asked, wiggling to the floor.
"To get money to buy you the prettiest outfit ever," I said matter-of-factly.
Harry was smiling at us before joining the conversation. "Faith, why are you up?"
"I heard talking," Faith explained.
"Are you tired, babygirl?" I asked softly, smoothing her hair back.
Faith yawned. "No! I want to play!"
"Faith, it's late," I frowned. "You should be in bed."
"But I took a nap!" Faith pouted.
I sighed, ready for a long argument and questions of "why?"
"Okay Faith, let's play," Harry interjected.
Faith cheered and ran out of the room. "Yay, you're the fun one Daddy!"
I frowned at Faith's statement. What did she mean, Harry was the fun one? Harry laughed at my expression.
"Why are you the fun one?" I asked, disgruntled.
"I let her play whenever," Harry explained.
"Easy parent," I mumbled.
Harry laughed at that. "C'mon, let's just go."
...
"One, two, three, four, five," I chanted, covering my eyes.
Yes, we were playing hide-n-seek and had been for the past half hour. I was almost falling asleep just counting. I somehow almost always ended up counting, as Faith chose to hide with Harry.
"Twenty-nine, thirty!" I finished. "Ready or not, here I come!"
I paused for a second, listening for Faith's high-pitched giggle. After hearing none, I started to search, careful to be quiet. They weren't hiding in the living room or kitchen. That left the bathroom or the bedroom. As I padded down the hallway, I scanned the living room one more time before the closet door opened and "Boo!"
I screamed as Harry and Faith jumped out of the closet. Harry tripped over Faith and lost his footing, falling right on me, bringing me down with him. Faith dissolved into laughter at Harry and I.
We both groaned as I opened my eyes to find Harry's face inches away from mine. I gulped.
"Ow," Harry rubbed his head.
"You're heavy," I whined, trying to push him off.
"Mm," Harry moaned. "And I fell on you."
"Thank you, Captain Obvious," I said sarcastically. "Yes you did fall on me, so could you kindly get off?" I said, pushing at Harry's chest.
Harry shifted and suddenly realized how close our faces were. His eyes flickered from my eyes to my lips. I swallowed hard and Harry's face got closer.
We lurched apart at Faith's giggle. "Mommy, me and Daddy scared you so bad!"
I smiled weakly at her. "Yes, you did babygirl."
Harry stood up and helped me up, looking as awkward as I felt.
"Can we watch a movie?" Faith asked, completely oblivious to the sexual tension in the room.
"Yeah sure," Harry said, heading towards the living room.
When we were settled on the couch watching Tangled, I leaned over and whispered in Harry's ear, "Glad to see you finally came out of the closet."
...
Tangled was about halfway over when Faith finally fell asleep. Her head was resting on my lap and I mindlessly braided her hair and undid it, making all kinds of braids.
"Hey," I whispered to Harry.
"What?" he responded.
"Thanks for watching Faith," I said.
"Not a problem," Harry replied. "I am her Daddy, and she's such a sweet kid."
I smiled down at her. "She wore herself out."
"She has so much energy," Harry whispered.
"All kids do," I said matter-of-factly.
Harry chuckled slightly at that. "Faith just plays hard and crashes hard."
"Yeah," I said, stretching. "We should probably be going home now; we've bothered you long enough."
"No!" Harry's hand shot out and he grabbed my wrist. "You don't have to leave," he said. At my cocked eyebrow he elaborated. "I mean, it's past midnight. It's not safe for anyone to be going around. You can just stay the night."
"I have work in the morning," I remembered.
"We can just wake up early," Harry whispered.
"Fine," I answered. "Why are we whispering?"
Harry laughed. "Because Faith is sleeping and we don't want to wake her up?"
"Plus Tangled is playing," I added.
Harry looked at me like I'd grown three heads.
"What?" I defended. "Tangled is a good movie."
Harry just shook his head and scooted over so we were side by side on the floor with Faith lying over both of us, head in my lap and feet in Harry's. This was strange. This was the first time Harry and I had gotten along since we'd met. After a couple minutes, I yawned. I'd been up at six, working and it had to almost be 3:00am now. I wanted to lie down, but I didn't want to move for fear of disturbing Faith.
"You can put your head on my shoulder if you want," Harry offered, his cheeks a light pink.
I could feel my own face reddened. "Um, is that okay?"
Harry blushed even more. "Well, I offered, so..."
"Okay," I said.
Slowly, I rested my head on Harry's shoulder until I was comfortable. I would have thought Harry's shoulder would have been really bony, but surprisingly it was really comfy.
"You have a squishy shoulder," I informed him.
Harry's body vibrated as he laughed. "Thank you," he said.
I simply smiled before adjusting myself and I could feel a warm weight around my shoulders as I fell asleep.
