Chapter One: Performance
Darkness was all around me. Dust was filling my lungs. I couldn't see but I knew right away that I was in the middle of a warzone. The clanging and grinding of the swords made me grit my teeth, never liked sword fighting, even though I was good at it. Suddenly, from behind me, someone screamed in either agony or bloody murder, never figured out which one it was. I took my first instinct, and quickly stabbed the warrior in his shin, then the foot. I finished him off with a quick stab to his chest. He fell to his knees, feeling his cold blood soaking between my toes and seeping through my chainmail boots.
Another scream came from my left and I gently swung my sword over to the sound, as I was trained by my mentor. I felt a poke at my neck and another at my stomach and I realized that it was a diversion so warriors could surround me. "Put the weapon down and we'll slaughter you quickly!" exclaimed one of the unknown warriors. "I'll take his neck, and I'll make a fountain out of it!" laughed one of the warriors from behind me. I was trapped and it was almost impossible to escape, but not completely impossible.
First, I threw a smoke bomb to the ground behind me, then I pulled out my dagger and stabbed the two soldiers from behind me to get them out of the way. There was one more warrior that was smarter than the his two allies. He struck first, stabbing at my leg. I dodged and counter-attacked by throwing a smoke bomb at his face. He sliced it, thinking that the chainmail mask he was wearing would protect him. I put a certain fume inside the smoke bombs called Acidic Earothis, that melts metal, wood, or even flesh. He coughed a couple of times, breathed out the green smoke, and fell to the ground, his face deteriorating by the second.
Soon after the battle I was able to see again, the room slowly lighting up and the dust clearing. I looked over my left shoulder and saw the Carlenian Council, clapping for my "performance"One of the councilmen came up to a microphone and said "Steward Evenor, you have been promoted by the Carlyn Council, to become one with the Carlenian Knights". I smiled and realized that I wasn't actually fighting, it was all a performance for the council.
I was exhausted, as most people are after a long day of performing in front of a lot of people. I was leaving for the door when my mentor, John Heriot, walked up over to me and tapped my shoulder. In response, I palmed him away so we could talk more comfortably. "Good, still haven't gone soft" he replied in my attack. "Did you really think I've gone soft, after all these years from you training me?" I asked back in a sarcastic voice. "Wow, you never were rude" he shrugged me off in a stern voice. "I wasn't being rude, it was sarcasm" I replied before walking off to take a shower.
"Rude? When have I ever been rude?" I asked to my Solfer in my pod. "It's probably nothing that you need to worry about. You might as well get some shut eye" my Solfer replied in a comforting voice. "Solfer, search through coding 8895" I knew my Solfer was hiding something, and I would find it either way. "I'm sorry Steward, but I can't show you those files" Solfer replied with a stern voice. I knew most coding like the back of my hand, but the coding for my files were off-limits. My mentor once said that if I were ever to hack into my files, I'd find something I wouldn't be able to forget. The code for the files were in the council's office but they moved it after the great war. I don't know where they could have placed it after that.
"Solfer, show me where the code for my files are" I asked my Solfer, quietly so nobody heard. "I'm sorry but I can't show you that information. It's classified, and it has to stay that way" my Solfur wasn't answering my question, it never does if it's classified, but I've hacked into him before, and I'll do it again. "Please Solfer, don't make me hack into you again. You remember how I did that right?" I questioned him in a forgiving voice, also pulling out my quantum repulsor, which shock and paralyses Solfers, allowing me to hack into him with ease. Then, all of a sudden, I felt a stun in my arm. My Solfer had stabbed me in the arm with a stun syringe. "See you in the mourning" my Solfur said before my body went numb, I was light headed, and everything went black.
