FOUR
The next morning at the Keating residence her interns were still sorting through papers. The voice of the lady who spoke on the tv was mostly the only thing heard besides papers turning.
"Breaking news on the Lila Stangard murder here. Police just released the medical examiner's ruling that Ms. Stangard's death was indeed a homicide." Laurel gaped at the other students sitting while she brought her attention back to the screen.
"This comes a week after she was discovered deceased in a water tank at her sorority house, Kappa Kappa Theta."
Asher pointed his finger at the screen all while speaking with his mouth full. "Want to know the best part about that? 'Cause corpses crap themselves. So the sorority girls were all drinking their friend's poop." He threw his hands out while the others groaned I'm disgust.
Wes suddenly came into the office lounge his voice very loud. "Hey, is Professor Keating in?" Though he immediately got shushed by Michaela who was trying to look through the papers but still pays attention to the news.
"No suspects have been seen announced. But we do know the police spent the morning interviewing her boyfriend, Griffin O'Reilly, a star of the Middleton football team." Wes stared at the screen remembering his face from some nights ago.
Soon Annalise opened the door to her office walking out gaining attention. "Mr. Gibbins. Did you do what I asked?" He hesitated for a moment looking to the other students which Connor rolled his eyes.
"Uh, yes." He began to hold to file to her while she reached for it. "Well done. Did you look inside?" Wes's mouth gaped before he glanced at the file again. "I-I did, but I actually found a discrepancy between what the supplement report says versus what's in the prosecution's murder book."
Annalise almost instantly found her attention leaning onto Wes. "What kind of discrepancy?" "A name. The murder book says the hunting knife was found on the front lawn but Officer Jake Dorsey."
They were now all at the courthouse while Jake Dorsey himself sat in the stand. He leaned down towards the microphone before speaking his name. "Dorsey. Jake Dorsey."
Annalise's finger sat on the paper beside her left leg while she stared back at him. "Really? So you're not Officer Chad Mullens?"
The prosecutor let her eyes glare at Annalise before she turned her attention to the judge. "Your honor, I'm not sure what Mrs. Keating is insinuating here..."
Annalise instantly spoke up to defend herself. "I'm not insinuating anything. I'm just reading from the supplement arrest report, which says that Officer Mullens found the hunting knife, not our witness here."
She closed the file taking long stored up to the stand, her heels clicking with each step. "Or am I misreading the name, Officer Dorsey?"
Annalise put the file down letting the man grab it. He opened it reading the same text Annalise had previously. "Uh...no. Says Officer Mullens."
Annalise held back a smirk bringing her attention to the judge. "An officer who I recently found out is under investigation for drinking on the job,"
Asher let her eyes glade over to Wes who was watching Annalise intently. His eyes stayed on her as she was using the information he had obtained.
"Which explains why your boss might want to keep his name off of the official arrest report," Annalise began to turn and walk away from the stand going back the desk where Bonnie sat. "Maybe even changing his name for yours."
Prosecutor Blair's eyes flicked between Annalise and the judge before she chimed in. "Your honor, can we take a recess?" The judge ended up accepting the recess letting everyone leave.
The following morning Annalise stood in her office informing her interns, "After we get the knife thrown out, we attack the motive. Any thoughts?" Laurel who sat on a pale grey armchair without a second thought spoke up.
"I had one." Though Michaela stops her moment and instead said her thoughts. "Prosecution's going to use Marjorie's best friend to say that she wanted to divorce Max, which would have eliminated his inheritance per the prenup and thereby giving him motive to kill."
All while she spoke Laurel looked at her and the others in the room with disbelief written all over her face. "I looked into discrediting the friend, but I couldn't find anything just yet."
Connor uncrossed his arms taking is as his chance to win Annalise over once more. "I can make that happen. Why don't I help?" His voice her raspy as he turned his head around to smirk at Michaela.
Annalise took him up on his offer letting the rest of them leave and study while they waited for Connor.
Annora being bored now that everyone was gone went up to her mother tapping her shoulder. "Yes?" Annalise turned around pulling her attention away from her phone. "Uh, do you by any chance know where Frank is?"
Annalise had to bite back her smile as she thought the two were great friends, one of Annora's only friends really. "He should be in the kitchen."
Her daughter smiled warmly before taking quick steps into the kitchen. Walking in she saw Frank leaned over the counter reading something on his phone. "Frank?"
His head shot up at her voice before he let a smirk overcome him. "Whatcha need, sunshine?" She brought herself over to his side poking his chest. "I have a request, Mr. Delfino." Frank sat up from his bent-over position focusing on the girl in front of him.
"And what might that be exactly?" With Frank being Frank he pulled on his charming demeanor attempting to flirt with the younger woman.
"Take me to Papa John's and you're paying." With nothing but seriousness on her face, she gave him a blank look while he shook his head down to his feet.
"Alright. Even though it wasn't a question." Annora hid her laugh in the sleeve of her grin jacket while Frank just smiled.
"I can't say no to my favorite girl. Let's get out of here, sunshine." Frank grabbed his keys taking her small hand in his large one leading her to the door.
On the way out Annora called to her mother announcing that they were leaving.
As Frank got into his car he could only feel guilty, as he gazed at Annora struggling to bring herself to get inside the vehicle.
Finally, Annora got into his car buckling her seatbelt and allowing him to start the drive. "Sorry I took so long. I just..." Her voice trailed off as she tried to find a way to word her situation.
Frank on the other hand gripped the steering wheel tightly staring blankly at the radio. "Don't explain yourself. I understand." After the short exchange of words, a silence fell over them.
Having enough of it, Annora reached her hand to the knob turning it to a comfortable station. He turned his head a bit seeing what she was trying to do. So he took the opportunity to break the silence.
"So explain to me why you want me to buy you pizza?" His voice rasped tilting his head and let a brow raise in her direction.
She turned to him with a sarcastic tight-lipped smile on her face. "Uh, because I'm a human and I heard they tend to get hungry."
Frank gave a small scrunch of his brows paying clear attention to the road in front of them. "Annie... It's ten o'clock."
Her eyes glared into him with her voice more flat than ever, "What is that supposed to mean? They should be open now anyway." Frank took his eyes off the road letting them switch between it and the girl beside him. "How do you know that?"
Annora kept her teeth together as she gave him a smile speaking in a way too sweet tone. "Why do you ask questions you clearly know the answer to?" He was almost scared at the tone of her voice before she broke and started laughing causing him to calm.
"Oh, I love messing with you. But seriously Frankie, I need food." For the rest of the ride, Annora sat with her feet on the dash bobbing her head to 1975.
