Chapter 9
I still had time before the sun rose for the morning. As I left the Dauntless compound, it was almost pitch black out still. Using the darkness to my advantage, I sprinted away from Dauntless, towards Factionless territory. I had not spoken to anyone from there in weeks, and I was overdue for an update, as were they. I kept running until I saw another figure in the distance, using a tall column as cover.
As I got closer the figure steps away from the column, and I immediately recognize him. My contact, the man who trained me to fight, Damien.
"Hey," I greet him.
He nods his head at me in greeting. As he steps closer to me, I see scratches on his face, and his eye looks swollen. "There was another raid by Dauntless."
"Damn it." Raids were always happening when it came to the Factionless, unfortunately.
"Looks like they got you pretty good."
"Nothing I can't handle. The thing is, they killed a lot more this time."
"How many?"
"Fifteen."
I felt sick.
"Nobody you know. I found another group, tried to have them join the rest of us. Wrong place, wrong time."
"Doesn't make it any better," I said bitterly.
Damien moved on. "Tell me about your initiation."
I went into detail what was happening in initiation, who I met, who I have seen and interacted with. "I'm still too new to even get close to eavesdropping in a meeting. Initiation is grueling, and Eric makes sure I'm busy." I said with a roll of my eyes.
"What do you mean?"
I shake my head, "It's nothing."
"Tell me," he pushes.
"Just, I don't know. Almost seems like he has it out for me. Right from the start he was giving me a hard time. I've already been punished by having to clean the training room equipment, and he threw a damn knife at me!"
Damien had a strange look on his face.
"What? What is it?"
"I think he's got a thing for you."
"Wh-what? Damien, please. You have no idea how far off you are."
"Am I? You know that old saying, boys hit girls because they like them."
I almost laughed.
"That's ridiculous, he's my trainer, and a leader."
What happened the other night bounces back into my head.
"So? Listen, you're a looker. Especially now that you've gotten out of those drabby ass Abnegation clothes. I'm just saying, it wouldn't be crazy to think that he was attracted to you."
"Even if he was, that has nothing to do with anything."
"Actually, it might."
"What are you talking about?"
"What if you used it?"
My face must have told him I was completely lost.
"If he likes you, use it to your advantage. Get close to him. It could come in handy, if he likes you, you guys get comfortable around one another, he'll start to share things and tell you what's going in Dauntless. You could get inside information!"
"I'm not gonna sell myself to him! Are you crazy?!"
"Stop! You know that's not what I mean!"
"Isn't it?!"
"No! Listen, I'm not telling you to sleep with him. But it would help if you became friends at least, let him think that you're interested. The more comfortable he is, the more he's willing to tell you what you want to know."
This was insane.
"Just, think about it. The more you know, the more we all know, and then we're able to help everyone else."
I understood his logic, but it just didn't sit right with me.
"I'll think about it."
Damien nodded his head and smiled. "Good, good. Alright, the sun is going to be rising soon. You should be getting back."
I ran back to the compound, a million thoughts running through my head. As much as I wanted to deny it, I did feel there was some sense of attraction. Especially after the other night, the way he stared down at me when he hovered over me when we fought. I mean, I felt, something, some type of pull. I don't know what it means. But I think he felt it too.
But was I even remotely ready to let myself explore that? And if I did, could I go through with it?
I got back to Dauntless, slipping through a backdoor I had kept slightly propped open. Day was already starting to break, and I decided to get some breakfast since I was up and ready for the day to continue.
I made my way through darkened hallways that were dimly lit. Once I got to the dining hall, I grabbed some fruit and water and sat down. I was in the midst of peeling an orange when someone sat across from me.
Four.
I wasn't sure how it was possible, but he looked almost more serious then usual.
"Early morning?" He asked me.
"Yeah, figured I'd get a head start on the day."
"That head start includes leaving Dauntless?"
My fingers fumbled around my orange and I slowly looked back at him.
"I, uh, don't know what you mean."
"You're too smart to play dumb, Jo."
I chose to stay silent.
"You know the rules, you can't leave the compound alone when you're an initiate."
"Yeah, I'm sorry. I just needed some air. This is all just so, suffocating. I just needed some time alone, outside of this."
It wasn't totally a lie.
Four stared me down, looking like he was studying me. It was almost looked like he wanted to say something else.
"Don't let it happen again."
I nodded my head.
Four proceeded to get up and leave me by myself. I continued with my breakfast, breathing in and out.
I felt a pair of eyes on me now and looked up. I could see Eric from across the room looking at me. I caught his eyes and looked down immediately, remember the conversation from earlier this morning. Then letting my mind wander back to when we were fighting, and how close together we had been. The way I had unknowingly reacted to him.
Yes, he was attractive.
And I could almost say I was attracted to him.
But I needed to remember why I came here, and what I came to do.
I let out a long sigh, realizing what needed to be done.
I had asked myself, could I go through with it? Could I use someone just to pull information from them?
The answer, was yes.
I could.
And I will.
