Chapter 7
Today we were learning how to shoot. I knew how to shoot but wasn't the best at it. I did my best but no matter what I could never continuously hit a target dead center each time. We were currently on the roof with both Four and Eric. Four was currently demonstrating how to assemble and disassemble the gun. Eric looked like he was just there to observe. I kept my eyes trained on Four's hands, not wanting to make any eye contact with Eric. Every interaction I had with him things just seemed to get more and more odd and slightly uncomfortable.
I shake any thought of Eric from my head and focus on Four. Four has the gun in his hand that was assembled and pushes the button on the side that dropped the magazine. We continued to watch as he made sure their wasn't a bullet in the chamber. He was precise with all his movements and all the initiates watched mesmerized as he reassembled the gun.
"Now, it's your turn." He told us.
We each had a gun set out in front of us. Luckily, I knew how this part went. I worked steadily disassembling my gun. I looked around at the others, some were struggling, some were trying to work as a faster pace. Once it was completely disassembled, I felt someone's presence next to me. I looked over and found Four looking at my gun.
"Not bad, let me watch you put it back together."
I nodded my head and reassembled my gun, still making sure to work at a steady pace, not wanting to falter or show off. Once I was done, I set my gun down.
Four nodded his head in approval. "Start practicing your shooting."
Four walked away to watch over the rest of the initiates.
I spotted Eric and saw him watching me. When he noticed me looking at him, he quickly averted his eyes with a scowl on his face.
I quickly went back to focusing on my shooting. I had practiced shooting and could hold my own, but I certainly wasn't going to shine in this aspect. I could hit the target, but I knew I wasn't going to hit the bullseye consistently.
I looked over at Andrea and Jake and noticed both were almost done reassembling their guns.
I positioned myself and brought my gun up after loading it. I took my ty time, focused on the target and pulled the trigger, hitting the bullseye. I let out a relieved breath and relaxed myself for a moment.
The sound of more shots firing brought me back to concentration. I brought my gun back up and fired a series of shots. I emptied the clip and found that 75% of my shots had hit the center of the target.
I was pleased with the amount of shots that had hit the target. But I did tend to always want to do better, so I knew I needed to keep practicing.
I reloaded my gun and again positioned myself, readying myself to shoot.
"Your posture's wrong."
Eric.
I felt myself stiffen unintentionally. He was behind me, not wanting to face him, I kept myself forward.
"You're a little, stiff."
Knowing he can't see my face; I roll my eyes.
"Are you here to help me or mock me?"
I hear him let out a dark chuckle and he steps closer behind me. His chest almost pressing against my back.
"Relax your body, straighten your back out more. You get lazy and start to slouch, that's when your shots start to miss."
Next thing I knew, he had brought his arms around my waist, and was pressing a firm hand against my stomach.
"Your tension needs to be here, always." He says into my ear. "You're holding your gun tightly, but you need to remember to breathe."
I can barely breathe now with his body pressed against me. My heartrate unexpectedly ticked up and I can almost feel the pulsing in my ears.
I don't understand why I feel so nervous now.
"Focus on the target." I bring myself back and do as he says, focusing on the bullseye and trying not to focus that his hands are on me.
"Breathe out." I let out a breath I was holding.
"Shoot." I let out a series of shots, all hitting the center of the target.
I feel myself smiling, it actually helped.
Eric steps away from me and I instantly feel the loss of his presence.
"I expect you to hit the bullseye every time."
I nod at him, trying to keep my smile at bay.
"Yes sir," something flashes across his face. Before I can figure out what it was, he stalks off, shouting at the other initiates.
I can see Andrea looking at me from the side of my eye with a teasing smile.
"What?" I ask her.
Andrea shrugs. "You guys sure looked cozy."
My eyes widen in shock.
"Oh please, he was just helping me get a better shot."
"Sure, he was," she gives me a playful wink.
"Ladies!" Four shouts at us. "This isn't time for chit chat, get back to practicing."
We immediately go back to practicing.
I shoot at the target till I'm out of bullets.
They all hit the center.
As I go to fill the magazine again, I catch Eric looking at me and it almost looked like he had a smirk on his face.
Still elated at hitting the center each time, I give him a small smile back and go back to shooting.
