Chapter 6
Once I came back to the training room Andrea was in the midst of her fight against a girl from Erudite. Andrea won her fight, but just barely. Jake ended up escorting her to the infirmary since she had a busted lip and she was definitely going to have a few bruises. Once he came back, Jake was up and was able to win his fight as well.
The fights had taken the rest of the day and afterwards the rankings were posted.
I was second.
In first was Damon, a Dauntless born. Jake was sixth and Andrea was in seventh.
"You guys! We made the top ten, that's awesome!" Jake exclaimed as we sat down for dinner.
"I know, I honestly thought I would get ranked lower. I know I'm not the best fighter."
"Hey, you won your fight and you've been doing really good in everything else, you're gonna make it," Jake told her reassuringly.
"How about we go out tonight, we can celebrate!" Andrea said as we sat down for dinner.
"What were you thinking?" I asked her.
"I hear there's a party tonight, we should go!"
"Hell yeah, I'm in," Jake said excitedly.
"I don't know guys."
"Come on, Jo. It'll be so fun. You've earned a night out," Andrea pleaded. "Plus, we're off tomorrow anyways. We don't have to worry about coming back too late and not being able to train in the morning."
"It'll be fun." Jake said hopefully.
I guess one night wouldn't hurt. "Fine."
"Yes! Okay, let's eat and then we're going shopping!"
Jake decided to skip out on the shopping and Andrea dragged me in and out of a few different stores. She ended up getting a black crop top that only had one sleeve and short leather skirt and a pair of too-high high heels. With much pushing from Andrea, I got a cropped black tank top that had openings on the side which left the sides of my exposed, then in the center the bottom of the top came to a point just above my belly button. I decided to just wear black jeans and Dauntless issued boots, deciding to try and be a bit more comfortable.
Andrea also made sure to pick up enough makeup for all the women of Dauntless to wear. I didn't know what any of it was, but she assured me she would make us look phenomenal. After getting dressed back in the dorms, Andrea applied all sorts of stuff to her face, but she was right; she did look phenomenal. Andrea told me I didn't need anything 'heavy', whatever that meant. She applied eyeliner to my eyes and mascara to make my lashes look longer. She applied some powders to my face and made my lips glossy.
"My work here is done!" She exclaimed.
I examined myself in the mirror and was slightly surprised.
"You look amazing!" She told me.
"You guys ready to- oh, wow," We both turned to look at Jake and his eyes never left Andrea. "You, you look beautiful," He stammered. "Y-you both do."
"Thanks." Andrea said happily. "We're ready, I need a drink."
"That makes two of us," Jake said chuckling.
We made our way down to a club down at the pit and it seemed that almost all of Dauntless was there.
We immediately made our way to the bar, Andrea slipping through easily between everyone to get to the front. When she came back, she had drinks in her hands for all of us.
"We should dance!" Andrea said happily.
"Yes! Let's go!"
"You guys go," I told them. "I just wanna hang out for now, but I'll meet you guys up there in a bit." I sent a wink over to Andrea.
"Sounds good!" She grabbed Jake's hand and lead him over to the overcrowded dance floor. It was clear Andrea and Jake both have feelings for one another, it was the least I could do to let them have some time together.
With my drink in hand I made my way over to the corner end of the bar where it wasn't as crowded, probably since there wasn't a bartender. I sat down at a stool and sat my drink down on the counter, taking small sips periodically. I know this is a party, but I also knew I didn't want to drink heavily. I never drank before, so I knew drinking too much would not end well for me.
I was looking over at Jake and Andrea dancing when someone sat beside me. Looking over was the last person I thought I would see.
"Hey, Four."
"Hey, what are you doing way over here?"
I shrugged. "Just wanted to just relax a little, that's all."
"Barely touched your drink." He said, motioning over to my almost full glass.
"At least I have one," I said teasingly, his hands were bare.
"I'll give you that," he said, a hint of a smile on his face. "You should join them," he said, motioning his head in the direction of my friends and other initiates. "You've earned it."
"Thanks, I appreciate you saying that."
"It's the truth," he said bluntly.
I looked back over at my friends and saw Andrea jumping in the air motioning for me to get on the dancefloor.
"Guess I should probably take your advice," I said, standing up. "I'll see you later, Four."
I made my way through the crowd over to my friends. Once I reached them Andrea grabbed my hand. "Finally! Dance with us!"
The song was catchy and there was enough of a crowd around me where I felt comfortable enough to feel like there wouldn't be a bunch of eyes on me. I danced with both Andrea and Jake, moving my hips and putting my hands in the air. It felt good to let a little loose with my friends. Other initiates had joined us, and I found myself dancing around with everyone. As I was dancing, I spotted Four again, looking at us and with a drink in his hand this time.
As we continued to dance, a Dauntless guy came up behind Andrea, attempting to dance with her. Andrea gracefully pulled herself away and moved a little closer to Jake, but the guy wasn't letting up. He grabbed onto Andrea's hips to pull her towards him.
"Hey! Get off me!" She shouted. The guy, who was obviously drunk didn't care and didn't let up. "I said no!"
Andrea attempts to shove him away, and in response the guy shoves her back and she falls to the ground.
"Fucking tease."
"Hey!" Jake goes over to him, fist drawn back. But this guy is a full-fledged Dauntless member, obviously older, and bigger than Jake. He blocks Jake's hit and punches him in the face, knocking him to the ground.
Now I'm really angry.
"That was a mistake," I tell him.
Before he realizes what I'm doing, I punch him in the gut. He bends over in pain, clutching his stomach. I then grab his head and bring my knee up, smacking his face against it. He went down hard and goes unconscious.
I turn over to my friends as they're getting up. "Are you guys okay?"
"Yeah, yeah we're fine," Jake responds.
Suddenly Four appears beside me. "Someone get that guy to the infirmary!" He shouts, clearly pissed.
Two members spring into action and pick the guys off the floor. The crowd that and formed around us starts to disperse as more people realize the show is over and get back to dancing.
"You should get to the infirmary too, Jake."
"I'll go with him," Andrea offers."
"Me too."
"No, it's okay." Andrea tells me. "We'll be right back; he just needs some healing cream for his face."
"Yeah, we'll be fine. But thanks, Jo. That was bad ass."
They walk off to the infirmary and I'm left with Four.
"You alright?" Four looks me up and down, looking for any marks.
"I'm good."
"Your hand okay?" He picks up my hand to look for any bruising.
"You guys taught me how to hit, trust me I'm okay," I tell him with a smile.
"Somehow I don't think we were the first ones to show you."
I resist the urge to let myself tense up. "Well, never hurt to get some practice in before transferring," I say with a shrug. "I'm gonna step out for some air."
"You sure you're okay?"
"Yeah, really. I just need a minute."
Four nods my head and I maneuver my way through the crowd out of the club. I walk a little away from the entrance just enough where the music is still in the background but not so deafening.
I let out a long breath of air to relax myself.
"That was quite the hit." I jump in surprise and turn around, face to face with Eric.
"You guys taught me well."
Eric walks closer to me and stands in front of me. I lean against the wall behind me to give myself more distance from him.
Eric gives me a smirk. "You afraid of me, stiff?"
"Afraid? No."
Slightly intimidated? Yes.
"No?" Eric looks amused and yet, there is something so dark about the look he's giving me.
"You should be." Eric steps closer to me, close enough to need to look down at me and me up.
"Why?"
"I'm very dangerous. And I can make your initiation here, very difficult."
He's close enough that I can tell he's been drinking. And I think after tonight I've had my fill of drunk men.
"In that case, I should probably get out of your way then." I move myself away from the wall and turn to walk away. Eric's hand shoots out and grabs onto my wrist, pulling me back.
"Don't do that."
"Do what?"
"Hold back."
"I don't know what you mean."
"Yes, you do," he says firmly. "You want to challenge me, I see it. And yet you don't. You know, you're ranked second because that's where you want to be. You could be first, but you're holding yourself back. And that's why we put you second."
So much for trying to blend in.
I don't know how to respond to him. So, I choose to say nothing.
Eric's face hardens and he lets go of the grip he had on my wrist. "Get back to the party, your friends should be back soon."
I quickly make my way back to the club, not daring to look back.
