Chapter 7: Power Couple

Apollo is on his way outside to check on meg and Valkyrie and see if there is anything he can do to help them. As soon as he steps outside he knows something is wrong. All around the ship in the clearing are large native animals that he immediately recognizes as triceratops. It only takes him a moment to realize that not only is the clearing filled with these huge animals but his niece and the crew mechanic are surrounded by them. Right away he knows he has to do something.

Without thinking too hard, Apollo grabs one of the branches the ship knocked down when they landed and starts to carefully swing it around in a way that is meant to nearest ones to him let out some grunts of annoyance and displeasure at the new motion. Slowly they all start to move away from him.

The medic makes his way towards his niece slowly and carefully. He gently puts a hand on her shoulder to let her know he's there. She jumps a little at the sudden contact but he notes that he was already hyper aware of the large animals around them.

"Here," Apollo hands her the branch he's been using. "Use this to keep them at a distance." After she takes it he bands down and picks up another branch. He shows her how to move the branch to encourage the animals to move but not spook them into a stampede. Together they make their way towards Meg who was so into her work she was completely oblivious to the situation around her.

Val taps the mechanic's arm to get her attention while the medic kept her eyes on the large animals around them. The mechanic startles at the action. Val puts a finger to her lips, indication to the older woman to stay quiet. Apollo hands the mechanic a branch he picked up and together the three of them start to encourage the large animals to move on. The two women follow his lead and slowly the entire groups of triceratops move on together away from the ship.

As soon as the last large creature disappears into the surrounding trees the tension lifts and all three breath and sigh of relief.

"How did you know what to do?" Val asks her uncle.

Apollo tries to figure out a believable response so they won't realize that he actually had no idea what to do, he was just acting on instinct. "I us had a girlfriend back in college who studied animal behavior."

Meg looks at him curiously. "Really? Which one was that? I don't remember any of your college girlfriends studying animal behavior."

Apollo panics for a second, he completely forgot for a minute that Meg went to college with him and his sister and his brother-in-law. She knew everything about his college life. "You must not have met his one."

"What was her name?" Meg asks in a challenging tone."

"Does it matter?" He scrambles to change the subject. "The important thing is you're both safe."

Val feels her mouth twitch into a crooked smile. "I guess you lived up to your supposed job description."

"What?" Both adults question her words.

"You said keeping the crew alive is your job. And you made sure we made it through alive." Val points out, trying hard to hold in her mischievous giggle, knowing her words will stir up trouble between the two adults.

There is a moment of silence while both adults take in the teenagers words. "Oh come on!" Meg exclaims. "That's not- this doesn't count!"

It's clear Apollo is fighting a smile. "I don't know, I did save your lives."

Meg rolls her eyes. "I don't know about that. We were doing fine."

Apollo lets out a small, slightly sarcastic laugh. "Really? you didn't even know that you were surrounded by more than a dozen animals that are basically living tanks until I came out here and helped get rid of them. If you had noticed, what would you have done? Would you even have known what to do?"

The two adults continue to bicker in front of Valkyrie who watches on amused. The teen doesn't even realize that her father has joined them until he speaks. "What's going on here?"

Valkyrie looks at her father and does her best to look as innocent and clueless as she is trying to seem. Not that is would matter, those two could argue about anything. They could've found a way to argue without her help.

Alex sighs. "Hey!" The bickering adult's turn to look at him. "Could you two knock it off? We have enough going on right now without you two going at it every ten minutes. So put your lovers quarrel on hold and at least try to get along long enough for us to get some work done."

"Lovers quarrel?" Meg questions.

Alex looks at her thoroughly unamused tone. She decides not to press her luck. "How is it going with the solar panels out here?" Alex asks his daughter without taking his eyes off the adults.

"We got interrupted, but it's coming along. We can probably turn on what we have set up so far and run a test."

Alex thinks for a moment then nods. "Let's try a test."

Val doesn't answer. Instead she moves to the nearest solar panel that is set up and does some work. They wait with bated breath to see if anything happens. After a tense few moments a triumphant shout is heard from the ship. Moments later Artemis comes running out of the ship, a bright smile on her face. "The lights are on!"

Val doesn't celebrate with he rest of them. "We only have minimal power back. We still have a lot of work to do to be fully operational again."

Alex pats his daughter on the back. "Celebrate the small victories." The entire crew, that is outside at least, celebrates this small victory together in their own way even though they know there is still al to of work to be done.

"What needs to be done now?' Alex asks his daughter.

Val thinks for a moment. "I should probably go inside and get to work on getting our power distributed to different systems. Meg should keep working out here. It would go faster if she had something help."

Alex nods, a plan forming in his mind. "Go inside and get to work. Apollo, you stay out here and help Meg with the rest go the solar panels."

Val looks at her father like he's insane. "Are you sure having them work together is a good idea?"

Alex doesn't answer her. He looks directly at an annoyed Apollo. "Work together. Don't make me come out here and separate you two like a pair of children. Be adults. Please. I don't care what you have to do to get along. Just get the work done." Apollo nods his understanding. Without nay more debate on the matter Alex ushers Valkyrie and Artemis inside.

Meg and Apollo stand there stunned for a few moments. They've known Alex for years but he's never told them off like that before. After a few silent awkward moments they finally decide to break the thick tension in the air. "Well," Apollo awkwardly claps his hand together and turns towards the mechanic, "I guess we'd better get to work before he comes back out here to yell at us again."

Meg looks at him offended. "What makes you think he'll yell at both of us and not just you?"

"Well you're supposed to be showing me what to do so I would say we would both be at fault if something went wrong." He points out.

"Really?" Meg scoffs. "Well you're his family."

"And that means I automatically get more blame? You've known him longer," Apollo struggles to keep his amused front but really he is starting to get tired of this argument.

Meg isn't pretending at all. She rolls her eyes and scoffs again. "I only met him a few months before you!"

There is a beat of tense silence that hangs between them until Apollo finally breaks the tension by cracking a smile and letting out a loud laugh that echoes in the air. Meg's glare turns to a look of annoyed confusion. Apollo holds a hand up and doubles over from his laughter, struggling to catch his breath. "I'm sorry. It's just- your face!" He dissolves into another fit of laughter. Meg glowers at him. It takes a few moments but a medic is finally able to compose himself.

Meg looks at him, unamused. "You finished?"

Apollo chokes down another laugh and nods. "You realize we waisted all this time fighting and haven't even started working yet. This is exactly what he was talking about." Meg opens her mouth to argue back at him but he holds up a hand to stop her. "Why don't we show him we can work together, without arguing. Prove him wrong. What do you say, truce?"

Meg looks at his offered hand suspiciously for a moment before takin git and shaking it firmly.

Apollo nods good-naturedly and smiles. "Right, what's first?"

Meg talks him through what he has to do and they get to work. They work silently, barely even glancing at each other while they go about their own jobs. A silent but tense peace settles between them. The thought of pricing Alex wrong is incentive enough, a decent carrot to keep the truce going. But the thought of him coming out here and yelling at them like misbehaving children is just as big of an incentive, the stick if you will. With both hanging over their heads the truce is safe for now, no matter how shaky is foundation.

After several hours they had made impressive progress, especially since they were both working outside their area of expertise. There was a moment when the silence was getting to Apollo and he started humming, which caused Meg to glare at him until he became very uncomfortable and stopped and the silence settled over them again.

Alex makes his way outside with the intent of checking not he two adults and hoping he doesn't find a potentially bloody scene when he gets there. Whatever his expectations were, they sure weren't this. When he gets outside he finds both adults working dutifully and silently, no damage to the supplies or them can be found.

The mischievous side of Alex begs for a chance to have a little fun and he slowly claps his hands with a grin on his face, causing both of the the other adults to turn their attention towards him. "See? Look at what you can accomplish when you're not bickering like children."

To their credit, they don't take the bait. Meg and Apollo share a look before going back to work, effortlessly ignoring him. "The silent treatment?" Alex lets out a low whistle. "Did I really hurt your feelings that much? Was it that bad to have to work together for a little bit?"

Again his answer is silence. Alex feigns hurt, laying a hand on his heart. "Ouch. you guys might actually be hurting my feelings here."

Meg slams her tool down a little harder than necessary. "And you accuse us of being childish?"

"Oh come on." Apollo whines. "I wanted to see if we could win." Alex grins. "So you do speak."

Meg rolls her eyes. "Of course we speak. But we're working. So are you going to keep taunting us or can we get back to work?"

Alex holds his hands up in surrender. "Sorry. By all means, continue."
