Chapter 2 Survival Plan
Val wakes up a few hours later feeling simultaneously well rested and like she need several more hours of sleep. With her eyes still closed she pats the bed beside her to find it empty. Her eyes fly opens and she looks for Mars in a panic. Then the previous days events come flooding back to her. After catching her breath, she gets up and makes her way to the infirmary. Upon arrival she spies Mars in his bed in the corner and goes over to him. Mars raises his head a little in greeting. She smiles and sits down next to Mars and starts to calmly pet and scratch his head.
"I thought you'd be in here."
Val turns to the door in a flash to see Apollo leaning in the doorway, looking down at her with a slight grin. "I got a notice that your heart rate jumped again. When it started to go down on it's own I thought, well I know my niece." Apollo pushes off the doorway and shoves his hands in his pockets. "Want to talk about it?"
Val shakes her head and mutters an almost inaudible response, "Not rally."
Apollo nods in understanding with a small smile. He gestures to Mars on his bed. "You and that dog are close. You have a connection I don't really understand. It's different than the rest of us. I'm glad you have each other."
Val gives a smile and looks at the dog next to her. Her smile turns sad looking at the bandaged and usually energetic animal. "What happened to him? How bad is it?"
Apollo's smile falters hearing her slightly broken voice. "He's going to be fine. I promise."
"That's not what I asked."
Apollo sighs. "He bruised his ribs, sprained his shoulder, and fractured his leg. But he's going to be fine. No permanent damage. As long as he rests and takes his medication and does what I tell him, he'll recover in no time. He's lucky he's young. It could've been worse."
"You always say 'it could've been worse' like that's supposed to cheer us up." Val states critically. "I'm starting to wonder what you think the worst case scenario is." Apollo smirks at his sassy niece. "Let's hope we never have to face a worse scenario. That's why I'm here, isn't it? To keep you all alive."
At that very moment Meg is walking past the infirmary and hears his statement. She pauses in her walk and pokes her head in the room. "Is your uncle having delusions of grandeur again, Val? Because I could've sworn I just heard him say something along the lines of him being the sole reason we're all kept alive and never in a worst case scenario. And that's about the most laughable thing I have ever heard! I mean, this guy, keeping us alive. That's so cute." Meg is laughing by the time she's done.
"Well, I'm pretty sure keeping the crew alive is part of my job description as the medic, wouldn't you agree, Val?" Apollo looks at Val for confirmation.
Val, in turn is trying really hard not to laugh at the shared antics of her uncle and long time family friend. Everyone knows that their long time professional and personal rivalry is nothing short of entertaining at best, and annoying at worst. Though given their current stranded status, a poorly timed or located argument could be a very bad thing, and a far cry fro entertainment.
Luckily, before their entertaining argument can continue much further the intercom turns on. "Good morning crew, can we all meet in the meeting room soon please? We have some things to discuss." The intercom turns off so does her mother's voice.
Val glances between the two adults and grins a little, almost mischievously. "You heard the boss. Let's go ladies." She gets up from her sitting position and pushes past both of them and out of the room. They both just look at her in mild shock at her statement.
"Did she just-?" Apollo starts.
Meg nods. "Yeah. She did." Meg shakes her head and fights a chuckle, a smile making it's way on to her face. "But she's right. We should go."
Minutes later the entire crew is gathered in the meeting room. Artemis had them all sitting around the table in the center of the room. She looks around and sighs. "Clearly we are all aware that we are in a serious situation here. We're here to determine, as far as we can, just how serious and decide on a course of action." Artemis takes a deep, shaky breath and picks up a tablet. "Meg, you said the engines are damaged. And there's damage to the outer hull as well. As of yet though, the full extent of the damage is not determined and can't be prioritized. Right?"
Meg nods in confirmation. "There's a radiation leak. Which is why certain parts of the ship are off limits right now. At least until I can make it to the engine room to make repairs on that. As for the hull, it's in rough shape audits not my top priority."
"Wait," Apollo interjects, "why isn't the hull priority? I think the stability of our home should be a priority."
"Do you want o get radiation poisoning?"
Apollo holds his hands up, surrendering.
"Okay, if we can move on now," Artemis looks between the two. When they don't interrupt her she continues. "Apollo, was the infirmary damaged?"
"I'll have to double check the bigger, more technical equipment. But as fas I can tell everything seems to have survived just fine."
Artemis nods, making a quick note on her tablet. "Val, do you know anything about our technical systems yet?"
Val shakes her head. "We have life support. Obviously. Lighting, heating, and cooling for now. But I can't tell what damage has been done yet. Or what's been done to the solar panels. It could take me a while to go through he systems and all the electrical systems. For now, only use the necessities. Make a note if something isn't working. That's my best advice."
Artemis sighs and makes another note. "Will, what do you know about supplies?"
"I know that most of our supplies were below deck." Will starts.
"Were?" Apollo interrupts.
Will shoots him a look. "Obviously that's where the radiation leak is and it's off limits. We can't know if the supplies are safe even when the radiation leak is repaired. I wouldn't recommend using it. With the supplies we have up here, we'll survive ten days max. Unless you think of an alternative."
Artemis sighs and makes a few notes on her tablet. "As for Alex, he's been making a profile on the environment we landed in. Studying the landscape and wildlife."
Alex nods in acknowledgement. "We're obviously in a hostile environment. And there are no definite records from this time, only records of people studying this time. Basically, our records are guesses and incomplete at best. That being said, if we're going to make it here we can't avoid going out there." Alex takes a deep breath and look around at the crew. "We will have to hunt, find water, and build a shelter of some sorts. While we're all here, I suggest we make a plan for how we will accomplish all that, and repair the ship."
Everyone silently nods, watching him attentively. Meg is the first to break the increasingly tense silence. "Isn't that kind of your department?" She looks around, "Well, we're all ears Action Man."
Alex smirks a little at her comment. "Clearly the repairs to the ship take precedence. Meg and Val will be mostly delegated to that. Those of us who know some mechanics can help as needed. Will, you and Apollo will be with me mostly. We'll be finding food and water and finding materials to build a temporary shelter."
Apollo opens his mouth to protest, Alex interrupts him before he can. "I know, you aren't a survivalist, you're a medic and you signed up to heal, not hunt. But we need you to help us and do your part. You and Artemis will be taking shifts between helping Meg and Val and helping Will and I." Apollo sits back in his chair with a huff. His annoyed expression clearly showing his displeasure. Alex turns to his wife. "Missy, you will take first shift helping Meg and val. When not helping them, try to take inventory of what we still have available in the storage rooms still accessible." Artemis nods in understanding. "Do we all understand our roles? Any question before we move on?" Alex looks around, the looks of determination and annoyance stare back at him. "Alright then, get some food and prepare for your jobs. We'll be starting in about twenty minutes."
One by one the crew started to break and go their separate ways. Artemis takes a shaky breath and looks at her husband. "Do you really thing we can do this?"
Alex looks over at her, startled by her question. "Why would you ask that?" Artemis sighs and looks at him sadly. He gives her a reassuring s lie and opens his arms for her. She accepts the hug gladly. "We've been in tough spots before. Don't worry we'll get through this. I honestly don't think there's anything this family can't do." Artemis smiles up at him. Alex looks down at her with love. "Come on, Missy. We'd better get moving. They're probably all waiting on us."
With that they go their separate ways. Alex leaves to prepare to lead the other guys outside to father water and possibly hunt. Artemis however goes in search of Meg to figure out how she could best be of help with the repairs.
Knowing Meg can't get into the engine room with the lower level sealed because of the radiation leak Artemis decides to look for her in her room. She finds Meg in her room gathering tools. Artemis knocks on the doorway to get the mechanic's attention. "So, do you have a plan to get to the engine room for repairs? I mean without dying."
Meg stops what she's doing briefly and glances at Artemis. As if she's trying to figure out how to tell her something difficult, but important. Slowly Meg pulls out a radiation suit from the corner of her room. "I keep this her just in case." Artemis didn't want to think about what that could mean. What possible reason could meg think of to keep an extra radiation suit in her room. Luckily she does think of it, but still the fact the think the need for it is so high is a little troubling. Without even stopping Meg starts to get into the suit. Artemis watches, trying to think of what to say. Eventually Artemis asks, "What can I do to help?" Meg gives her probably the most serious look Artemis has ever received from her friend. "I only have one suit up here." The silence that follows that one statement is this with the gravity of what it means. No one will be able to go down there with her. No one will be able to help her. If she gets hurt or her suit fails she is as good as dead. Meg silently collect her tools and exits her room, Artemis following behind her.
The two old friends get to the hatch that leads below. "You do have a plan don't you?" Artemis asks seriously.
Meg nods just as seriously. "The cameras should be shielded. You should be able to monitor my progress from up here if Val has the feed working." Artemis nods in acknowledgement. Meg takes a deep breath. "Seal the hatch behind me. Don't open it up until I say so." Silence is her response this time. "Artemis, I'm serious."
With a sigh Artemis relents. "Alright. I'll do it."
Meg nods in approval. With one last moment to steel her nerves she reaches for the hatch. She opens it and climbs inside slowly. Once her head disappears from view Artemis closes the hatch behind her. "Be careful," she whispers.
Meg descends below decks until she gets to the bottom. There's another sealed door. She can soon through the porthole window of the door the flashing red radiation alarm lights. Meg rests her hand on the handle for the door, "Moment of truth."
Slowly Meg turns the handle and opens the door, stepping out into the res lit room. She takes a few calming breaths, reminding herself of the importance of her job and why she must keep calm and focused. Slowly she starts to make her way forwards towards the engine room.
A little crackle of static was eluding to. "Meg? Val's go the com to your suit working." Meg rolls her eyes. "Yeah I figured that out," Meg mutters as she continues her slow march to the engine room.
The static crackles again followed by Artemis' voice, "What's it look like down there? Any damage?"
Again Meg rolls her eyes. "I'm not here to sight see. I'm going straight to the engine room and getting to work. Priorities."
"you're talking to me about priorities? I'm the captain."
"And I'm the mechanic. Don't tell me what damage to prioritize. Let me do my job and you do yours. Go check our supplies or see if Val needs help. I'll give you a report when I have information to share." Meg doesn't even waver in her steps as she replies.
There's a few moments of silence. "You're right. I'm sorry." There's a final small crackle of static before the com goes silent.
Breathing a sigh of relief Meg continues her journey to the engine room. The entire lower level is dark with only the red flashing alarm lights lighting the corridors, giving a red glow to the dark space that is really off putting. Especially when she gets to the door to the engine room. Through the window she can see emergency radiation lights glowing. The engine room lit up red. The shadows in the room looking scarily like they were alive. It is clear there is a lot of damage. It might take her a while to sort out what is related to the radiation leak. Time she doesn't have.
As she opens the door she speaks to the other two women on the ship with her com. "I've reached the engine room."
"How's it look?" Artemis asks.
"If you didn't interrupt me I would've told you. There's a lot of damage. This is going to take me a while."
"you can't stay down there long." Artemis becomes urgent over the com.
Meg shakes her head even though she knows they can't see her. "If I don't fix this we're all in trouble so I'm staying down here until the job is done."
"If you just patch the leak I can do a system reboot from here. After the reboot the system will automatically start to take care of the radiation that's flooded the lower decks. The other repairs down can wait until it's safe." Val speaks up for the first time.
Meg carefully think over the young girl's plan. Eventually she relents. "That's brilliant Val."
"Let me know when you've finished patching the leak." With that the com goes silent once again.
Meg starts thoroughly examining the damage, trying to find the source of the radiation leak. There's no obvious signs, which is making it more difficult. The power core isn't overloading, there isn't a crack in the containment shielding. Slowly and carefully Meg starts to move debris. After moving a particularly large piece of debris Meg finds the problem and is startled at what she finds.
A panel at the base of the containment unit is knocked loose and the edges, bolts, and connections are all shorn and torn. Meg sighs. "Now how am I going to fix this?" First she decides to see if there is any way it will still line up. Carefully she adjusts the panel until it lays flat again. It did line up. For the most part. Now how to attach it? The bolts are completely busted shorn cleanly at the heads. She can't weld it, there' son way she would risk it with the radiation levels in here. That's why none of the connections were welded in the first place. Even if she had nails to spare hammering probably wouldn't be a good idea. There would be little way of telling how brittle the panel is now, she doesn't want to risk damaging it even more. That only leaves one option.
Carefully Meg uses the nearby debris to hold the panel in place. After that's done she gets up from her position to look for the sealant. It's usually kept in a cabinet in the engine room by the tools, but with the crash and impact everything was passed around, anything could have happened. But still, best to check there first. Meg carefully gets to the cabinets and opens them. As expected the cabinets are a mess. Pushing through the piles of toppled tools and supplies Meg prays she finds a canister of sealant undamaged. Finally her prayers are answered. There, tucked in the corner is a canister.
Meg snatches the canister and goes back to the panel. Mentally crossing her fingers that this shot in the dark will work, she squeezes the trigger on the canister. The sealant is released onto the damaged part of the panel. Knowing they have limited resources she tries to only use what is necessary to patch up the panel. Once she's satisfied she stops and looks at her handiwork. "I suppose it'll have to do."
Switching on her coms Meg send a message to val. "It's patched up. I've got it patched up for now. You can do the reboot."
"I'll start the reboot as soon as you get out of there."
"You don't have to wait for me. Just reboot it."
"I don't have time to explain to you why you can't be down there so just move."
Meg rolls her eyes but listens. Quickly but carefully she starts to make her way back to the hatch to the upper deck. Once she gets into the shaft she realizes her suit needs to be decontaminated as well. Careful not to touch her own skin she starts to take it off in the shaft and leave the suit at the bottom of the shaft. Once out of the suit she starts to climb up to the top of the shaft to the top hatch. Without a com to tell them to open the hatch she knocks. After a while of frustrated knocking she hears the sound of the hatch being opened. Expecting to see Artemis at the hatch Meg is shocked when the face greeting her is Apollo.
He extends a gloved hand to help her out of the shaft. Meg accepts and is pulled free of the shaft quickly. The hatch is quickly shut behind her.
Artemis, who is standing nearby, pushes the intercom button. "She's back up Val, you can start the reboot."
Apollo looks Meg over as if examining her. "You should get to the infirmary."
Meg shakes her head, "I'm fine." Shortly afterwards she faints.
