chapter 19: door step

Yuuji and Megumi were walking along the sidewalk. They had just gotten off of the bus, and were walking towards Megumi's house, because Yuuji had offered to walk Megumi home.
They were a few feet away from Megumi's front door, when Megumi quickly turned to him and said, "Thanks, Yuuji. You can go now."
"Actually I was hoping we could talk for a bit more." Yuuji was about to say, but Megumi interrupted him.
"No really, you should go now." He insisted, pushing Yuuji away, a little anxious, his eyes darting between Yuuji and the front door of his house. Almost like he was afraid a monster might come out. "Before he sees you-"
But before he could get Yuuji to leave, someone came bursting out the door. "Megumi, you're home!" The person exclaimed. He ran over to Megumi, and wrapped his arms around Megumi's shoulders. Megumi immediately had an annoyed expression on his face. Here we go again, Megumi thought.
The person had white hair, and was wearing round black glasses and a long sleeved shirt. He was also very tall. His appearance was a mix of carefree and intimidating. Megumi looked exhausted the moment he came out of the house.
"Gojo-san-" Megumi was about to say, but the guy, Yuuji guessed his name was Gojo, interrupted Megumi by flicking him on the forehead.
"Megumi, how many times have I told you not to call me 'Gojo' anymore. Just call me dad instead!" Gojo insisted.
Megumi tried brushing Gojo's hand off his shoulder but it didn't work. "I already have a dad, and it's not like he's dead so you don't have to replace him. You're just my legal guardian."
"Exactly. Legal guardian, dad, same thing. And I'm not trying to replace your other dad, I'm just your new one." Gojo said. Megumi sighed, but he didn't attempt to argue any further.
Then Gojo turned to look at Yuuji, like he just realized he was there. "Who's this?" He asked Megumi. "Don't tell me you brought that Sukuna kid home again." He looked at Yuuji with disdain. "Man, I hate this guy. Didn't I tell you that you should break up with him and stay away from him? He's bad news." Gojo warned.
But then on closer inspection, Gojo realized that it was, in fact, not Sukuna. His demeanor was completely different, and he had no face tattoos. "Wait, he's not Sukuna, is he? Who are you?" He asked Yuuji.
"Um, I'm Itadori Yuuji-" he started saying, but he got interrupted once again. "Nevermind, you can just tell me inside. Let's go you two!" Gojo grabbed both Yuuji and Megumi by the arm and led them inside the house.
As soon as Yuuji entered, he realized how big Megumi's house was. It was very modern looking and sleek, and had sort of a minimalist vibe to it, along with a square type of aesthetic. The type of house you would see in the pages of a catalogue. Actually come to think of it, he might've seen this house in a magazine before.
Megumi and Yuuji sat down on the couch beside each other and Gojo was across from them, observing them. "So, who are you again?" He asked Yuuji.
Yuuji gulped. He wanted to make a good impression on him, especially since he was Megumi's guardian. So he bowed his head respectfully and said, "I'm Itadori Yuuji. Megumi's friend and classmate." He raised his head to look at Gojo's expression, but it was hard since he was wearing eye glasses. "You mentioned Sukuna earlier. I'm his twin brother."
"Ohh, that's why you two looked so similar!" Gojo exclaimed. "No wonder! So I'm guessing you're the better twin because your brother Sukuna is a real asshole."
"Well, I wouldn't say that I'm better," Yuuji scratched his head, remembering all the times everyone had called Sukuna better than him.
But Gojo waved him off. "You are. Just by the way you introduced yourself I can tell you're a better person than he is already. I'm Megumi's dad, although he refuses to call me that. But you can call me Gojo. I also happen to be a teacher at a private University."
Yuuji heard Megumi say from beside him, "Gojo's raised me and my older sister Tsumiki since I was 5 years old, because my dad Toji does business overseas, and he can only come by occasionally since he's so busy. So I've been with him for a long time, and he's also my legal guardian" he explained. Yuuji had already known some details like the fact that Megumi had an older sister, since they've talked about it before, but it was interesting to find out more about Megumi's family.
Then he got a little closer to Yuuji and whispered, "But he's also a really big handful and he gets up in everyone's business so I didn't want you to meet him."
So Sukuna and Megumi's guardian had met before, Yuuji thought to himself. He imagined them meeting for the first time. Sukuna would very easily get fed up with someone like Gojo, who seemed to go at his own pace. Just imagining them clashing was giving Yuuji a headache.
Then Gojo suddenly got up, and sat right in the middle of Megumi and Yuuji. He turned his head right towards Yuuji and said, "So what did you come here for? Are you trying to get into Megumi's pants?" He asked boldly.
Yuuji got flustered. "Uh, no!" He denied it. "I just wanted to walk Megumi home since it was so late and we spent time together for my birthday," he explained.
This time Gojo turned towards Megumi. "Oh yeah, weren't you supposed to be at that Sukuna guy's birthday even though I told you not to go? What happened with that? He broke your heart again didn't he?"
Megumi didn't respond. But his silence was all the confirmation Gojo needed to say, "Tch. I knew it. I knew that it would end up like this." He put his arm around Megumi. "Megumi-chan, you really have bad taste in men you know?"
"I don't," Megumi mumbled.
But then Gojo turned towards Yuuji. "Well, this kid seems nice enough, so I guess it's not all that bad. So you really aren't here to sleep with Megumi huh? And you just came here to walk him home?" He interrogated.
"Yeah," Yuuji confirmed. "Even though Megumi went to Sukuna's party, he ended up spending time with me. And we gave each other gifts too. I gave Megumi a mug and he gave me...he gave me, um..." Yuuji blushed, thinking about what happened in the park. Gojo raised an eyebrow, looking at Yuuji's expression.
Then he looked at Megumi again. "He gave you something on his birthday? Really? What did he give you? Show it to me, Megumi." Megumi took out the hand painted mug Yuuji had given him. Gojo turned it over, observing the paint.
"It's painted really well," he complimented. "It beats out all the gifts that Sukuna had given you."
"It really does," Megumi agreed.
Then suddenly Gojo got up and grabbed Yuuji by the arm again, leading him to the front door to escort him out of the house. "It's getting late so it looks like you'll have to go home. You know my rules Megumi." He said.
Megumi just sighed. "Yeah, I know. We weren't going to do anything anyways." He leaned back onto the couch.
Yuuji and Gojo walked out of the house, on to the front steps. Gojo sized Yuuji up one more time. "So you're interested in my Megumi eh? I saw you blushing in there."
Yuuji was speechless. And he couldn't even deny that he liked Megumi. So he just stammered out, "Um, well, I uh...."
Gojo just laughed. "I expected it. Megumi's a real beauty after all. Are you ever planning on confessing?" He asked.
Yuuji, again, didn't know what to say. Megumi was still technically dating Sukuna, and he still lacked a lot of self confidence, so he just replied with, "Well, I guess I have to think about it. I don't want to screw anything up." Like I always do, Yuuji thought.
But Gojo just patted him on the shoulder, "You've got this." He encouraged. "You know, I've seen a lot of boys interested in Megumi, but you're the first person I've seen give Megumi a gift that was exactly to his taste. You're probably the one he gave the homemade chocolates to right?" He asked.
Yuuji nodded, remembering Megumi's valentine gift to him. "Yeah. He gave them to me." He confirmed, smiling slightly at the memory.
"So you're already half way there!" Gojo exclaimed. "Between you and Sukuna, I can already tell you're the superior twin. And I really don't want Megumi to stay with Sukuna. So if someone has to steal Megumi's heart away, it's better if it's you." Gojo told him.
Steal Megumi's heart away. For their whole lives, it's always been Sukuna stealing Yuuji's crushes away from him, and not the other way around. "I don't really know..." Yuuji said, unsure.
"Have confidence in yourself. You can do it. You have my support, and probably also Megumi's if you know I mean," he smirked, which confused Yuuji a little bit. Then he pushed Yuuji away off the front steps. "Anyways, get home safe! I'll be cheering you on!" Gojo closed the front door.
Yuuji walked away from Megumi's house, feeling both happy and confused.
