TWELVE: New Comer

TURNS OUT GETTING lost had now apparently taken root in my subconscious. I didn't even get embarrassed about it. There was no need to when it had dug it's ugly claws into me.

Or maybe it's because I'm just new here and unfamiliar with the place yet. No need to be melodramatic.

I wasn't going to take credit for that. The last time had been entirely Ashely's fault. I clearly hadn't been to blame for that. The asshole had left me out there. Okay I scoffed at myself for sounding like a whining little child. I hated it.

As I mindlessly walked around like I knew exactly where I was going when I knew that I most certainly didn't, I got a few smiles from kids from the lower grades. I couldn't help scowling when a few boys winked at me.

Okay that last part warranted repetition.

They winked at me!

I sneered at the lack of respect. I could easily break their little bones if I wanted to. The school wasn't the type that would compete with those elite private schools. Every grade or form had their own block with their own labs and whatnot. Okay I knew that from the ones that I had managed to peek in.

The A levels were the only one with a fancy complex making it seem like it wasn't part of the school. I liked it. I liked anything that showed superiority. And it most certainly did.

But although the school itself was fancy to a certain degree and not over the top like most schoools I've seen, it just seemed weird that the Wilsons had chosen it for their precious son. And there were some students that didn't seem to fit in at all in the environment. Like maybe for example ahem.... Mandy. Or Liam. Oh yeah and that cute guy from yesterday.

Whoever his name is.

Okay maybe I was just projecting and profiling but I obviously had no idea of their financial situations. So it was senseless of me to make that assumption. But I was, I mean, I am aware of the Wilson's financial situation. I mean they owned a literal mansion in a very posh and well guarded estate.

I shrugged then sighed. It wasn't my business but I was now curious.

**************

Okay so I had pretty much went through the whole school if I was certain. There was no way I hadn't covered most of it. I had only one lesson which also happened to be neither my favourite or uh... not my favourite. Least favourite. Unfavourite.

Okay stop.

It became worse the more I said it in my head. In other words the subject was just.... there. I didn't hate nor love it. I rolled my eyes hating just how dumb I sounded.

"If I keep this up, I'm going to be exactly like Ashely."

Let's just say I was ambivalent in that subject. I was walking back to the complex when I saw my class teacher walking towards me in the hallway.

Maybe if I smile he'll miss me.

"Hey new comer." I turned around instantly dropping my chilling smile trying to see who he was calling, yet knowing exactly who he was calling.

"I'm talking to you. Come to my office." I sighed. The man was talking to me, I mean the man was looking at me after all. But wanting to get a rise out of him, I pointed my finger at a girl passing me that I knew from my class. I even went as far as to pat her on the shoulder and then point to him.

"He's calling you."

"Me? No I don't think he's..."

"Not Mbalenhle. I'm calling you. You're the new one." With my lips twitching I placed a hand against my chest pointing to myself.

"You're calling me?" I asked going towards him. He scowled in annoyance.

"Don't act smart. You're the new comer. Aren't you?" I shrugged.

"I didn't know I was."

"Of course you are. You just came here this week."

"Last week." I said following him to his office.

"You're still new here." I walked after him into the crammed space. There were papers, files and books everywhere. He obviously didn't feel the need to use the empty cabinets.

He may have been my class teacher but he was an actual teacher to other students that he taught. I wondered what he actually taught. It was weird imagining him saying anything tangible and coherent. Anything that could be useful to a child that needed it.

"Have a seat." I stared at the disheveled couch wondering what he had done in that thing for it to look like that. Then I contemplated taking the chair that had a mountain of books and other file. How could anyone be so disorganised? It was alarming to see.

"Sit on the chair." He said like it was the obvious choice. I shrugged and picked one stack of books and put them on top of the other pile.

"Oh don't!...." I scowled putting yet another pile on top making it an even bigger mountain.

"...do that!" He pinched the bridge of his nose coming over to my side. He swatted my hands away.

"You just mixed the graded books with the ungraded ones. Now I have to go through every one of them to separate them." He groaned trying to separate them. I inwardly rolled my eyes and grabbed the last pile from where I had put it on. I remembered the book covers so it wasn't that difficult for me to separate them into three piles like they previously were.
He glanced at me for a few seconds before looking back at the books again.

"Oh." Was all he said.

Oh?!

Not even a thank you. He cleared his throat going around the table to his chair.

"You can stand then." I shrugged.

"Okay so, you've been here for two weeks and you haven't come to my office for any of your schedules and whatnot. Why is that?"

"I didn't know I had to come." He frowned before sighing.

"Okay. So newcomer...." He checked his watch and so did I. My last lesson started in exactly five minutes.

"It's Lanaya Khumalo. That's my name."

"I have a lesson starting soon so let's make this quick." He said ignoring me, pulling a file and it was my turn to frown when I saw my name on it.

"As your class teacher it's my duty to help and guide you for the duration of the year or however long I'll still be your class teacher. I'm the one evaluating your behaviour and mental state. Nevermind, you know how class teachers work. You get the gist of it. Now, have you had any problems since you came here?" He asked grabbing a pen to start writing.

"Nope." He glared at me.

"No." He still looked at me expectantly. I inwardly rolled my eyes again.

"No sir."

Then he continued to ask me a bit more other questions. Five minutes slowly crept to six minutes. My Biology teacher was the kindest and sweetest teacher but she disliked late comers to her class. I didn't trust sweet people like that. They had secret not so sweet tempers.

"Okay so Colleen Shawn High School doesn't condone bullying and any acts of violence. And we strongly discourage dating within school property from every grade." He peered at me through his lashes.

"I'm sure you won't have a problem in that regard." I didn't know whether or not to be offended by his insinuation that I wouldn't find a boyfriend.

Not that I wanted one!

But he outright just called me ugly Betty in his own words! This time I really rolled my eyes at him. Of course without him seeing. I sighed feigning a faraway look.

"It's still early to tell though sir. Sometimes you just can't ignore a fish when it jumps into your boat."

Especially if it's a gold fish. With a nice smile and a supermodel physique.

Wait. Was I still talking about a fish? And why exactly did that fish have two personalities and two different traits that suspiciously belonged to a pair I knew all too well.

He just gave me the what the fuck look and I waved him off with a wink which he scowled at. The man took grumpiness to a whole new level. Liam had nothing on him.

"Well if a fish jumps into your boat, you toss it back into the sea. That's the gospel this school is preaching."

Not if it's a gold fish.

With a smile and...

Snap out of it!

I needed to stop picturing those guys. I've been here for two weeks and here I was already thinking of taking the fishes home.

Okay that came out wrong.

That is definitely not what I wanted to say.

"You can do that at your homes. You can fish in you own ponds. That's the fish you can take home."

I choked on my spit. There was no way he just said that.

"Then you can toss it into your very own fish tank."

Mr James pushed a few papers towards me.

"This is the sports timetable for this term and season. Weekly training schedule and seasonal fixtures. There's usually no training for the first few weeks after schools open." I ran my eyes over it reminding myself to go through it at home. I wasn't exactly a fan of sports and any kinds of activities.

"Participation in sports is compulsory therefore all students are required to choose at least one sport per term."

I had figured as much. But I couldn't help staring at the man sitting right across from me. He had to be a witch or something. A warlock to be exact. Or maybe he was just a mind reader. I had just been thinking about that.

"Sports differ with each grade blah blah blah. You've already made me very late for my lesson."

"Me?"

"Yes." He swore as he started grabbing a stack of files.

"Do you have any questions? If you do, hold them and ask me tomorrow." He rose up to leave and then just stood at the door. I was already standing so I stood there as well.

"Are you waiting for a personal invitation or what? Leave my office I want to lock up."

"Oh yeah. Sorry." I rushed out cursing the fact that I was already ten minutes late for my ambivalent subject.

***********

Okay so I was pretty sure I was supposed to be panicking about this but I wasn't. So apparently Biology wasn't taught in the usual classroom I had been accustomed to.

I would have gladly bunked the lesson but attendances were kind of taken seriously in this school here so which meant my absence would more than likely end up in my report card.

I decided to go check the science laboratory. Without bothering to knock, I just pushed the door open and slightly regretted it. Not only were some of my classmates in there, but some of the seniors as well. And of course all eyes were on me.

But that wasn't the icing on the cake. Right there in front of the class obviously teaching was Mr James. The son of a bitch had known I was attending his class today but chose not to tell me. There was no way he didn't know which subjects I took. I mean the guy had held my file in his hand just a few minutes ago. I couldn't help shooting daggers at him.

"Miss Khumalo, you're late for my class. Which means you'll remain standing for the rest of the lesson." I couldn't help looking at the mixed students in my class. Who were however happy to watch me suffer as they continued learning in comfort. Apparently it was a joint lesson today and noone had told me. With a smile on my face I turned to Mr James and opened my mouth.

"I'm sorry sir but I'm a newcomer." I said throwing his words from a few minutes back in his face. He had vehemently told me that I was a newcomer here, as if I was the only one. There were tones of us from different schools but the man loved to pick on me.

"No you're not." I tightened my hold on my stationary, my chilling smile still plastered on my face.

"Yes. I am. You told me a few minutes ago remember. And besides sir I am late after all because of you." He sighed still glaring daggers at me.

"Okay whatever take a seat. You're disturbing my lesson."

"Yes sir." Then I turned around trying to find an empty seat and I choked on my breath when I saw exactly where that empty seat was. Yep you guessed it right. It was right besides a fuming Liam. He looked like he was ready to leap from his chair and begin a vicious attack on someone.

But that wasn't the icing on the top this time. Right there beside the seat was an equally uncomfortable looking Cutesy. I watched as his mouth slowly rose into a devilish smile daring me to come sit there.

Oh hell no!

There was no way I was sitting right between the two of them.
