THIRTEEN: Red Toes

I STOOD THERE FOR an additional second before striding over there with a groan. I tried to look for another seat on my way. I made those twelve little steps multiply by a hundred.

"We'll be here for a week Miss Khumalo with that pace. But hey, you can take your time. It's not like we have any other things to do or anything." The class chuckled and I rolled my eyes reaching the table. I glared at cutesy when he made a show of pulling the chair for me. Not only did that small action cause a screeching sound to resonate around the room, it also grabbed the attention of Mr James.

"I didn't know you were such a gentleman. What a revelation." He said dryly looking at both of us and I couldn't help glaring down at him as I sat down. I nearly choked on all the sensation and signals my body kept sending me from being between them.

"It's never too late to practice Steven."

Steven. Yep. That was his name. He didn't look like a Steven at all.

And then cutesy had the audacity to call him by his name. Being a newcomer sure sucked.

"Miss me?" He said with an annoyingly wide grin. It annoyed me that he had such perfectly placed teeth. He must be a treat for his dentist.

"As much as I miss my kindergarten teacher." He chuckled pushing his chair a little closer to mine than was actually necessary. I couldn't help scowling.

"What are you doing here?" I asked him.

"I don't know. What on earth would I be doing in a Biology lesson?" I sighed turning to face Liam whose face had nearly turned white from frowning so much. My eyes widened and before I even thought about it, I raised my hand and smacked him a little right across the face. Cutesy chuckled clearly enjoying it.

"What the hell Lanaya?!" If eyes could stab anyone I would be lying on the floor in tattered strips.

"Seriously, you'll eventually die of anger or whatever that's written all over your face. I think I've asked you this before, but do you perhaps have something against smiling. Maybe that's asking too much from you. At least try relaxing a little bit." I whispered trying to not seem obvious to Steven that I was talking.

I shuddered to think what the punishment for that would be.

"He doesn't know how to do that either trust me." The guy on my left said and Liam and I both turned to him at the same time.

"I'm not talking to you." At the same time Liam said,

"We're not talking to you." That seemed to piss him off.

"And I wasn't talking to you either punkass. So you better shut it." I opened my mouth but Liam beat me to me.

"Or what? Are you going to make me?" Liam shoved his face towards cutesy meaning he shoved it towards mine.

"Okay you two..." I started to say.

"Yes I will if you're not too careful."

Now I had both of their face in my face. That wasn't a very nice situation to be in trust me. I would know, what with having them all over me.

That's so wrong.

I put my hands on both of their faces and pushed them away from each other ultimately and most importantly- from me of course. Before I could say anything else, Steven spoke up.

"I thought you guys will have learnt to behave by now. I don't want to hear any more words from you two." Then he turned to me and said.

"You toss the fish into the sea newcomer. Even if it's a gold fishes."

This time I couldn't help my jaw from hitting the floor. I was now most definitely sure the guy was a mind-reader. Or he could be professor X and I was somehow in the Xavier institute and I was surrounded by kids with superpowers and secret identities.

Is this really Colleen Shawn High or perhaps the name is just a cover and this is in fact Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters?

Or maybe the Wilsons were also part of the story and I had been drafted because they thought I possessed some kind of secret innate abilities. Then a thought came to my mind.

Then that would mean that Ashely also had some superpowers as well.

Then my eyes slowly moved to the guy on my left then to my right.

Yeah forget it!

That thought most certainly changed my mind. There was no way. I rolled my eyes at my momentary insanity.

So like you might have guessed, Mr Disorganised Office James was in fact a Biology teacher. Not just for the lower grades but for the seniors.

Who would have guessed right?

Our classes would only be combined when we were doing some experiments. I thought it was just a dumb idea since the seniors would have already gone through it until I saw just how necessary it was. It was unbelievable that these were the students that were going to be sitting for their exams that spring. It was beyond proposterous. We had done three experiments so far.

We had to work in pairs, one from the seniors and us. I was unfortunately stuck with Cutesy in a baggy white t-shirt. He looked great by the way. I couldn't help getting a peek of his abs which piqued my annoyance.

"It seems you're stuck with me. It must be nice being you." I scoffed.

"Trust me, it feels like I'm serving a life sentence in the underground."

"...as I said, catalase is found in nearly all living cells which protects them from oxidative destruction. For the last experiment, you're going to be isolating catalase from potatoes using hydrogen peroxide. It is a highly oxidative molecule. It works as an oxidizing agent by receiving electrons. The end product will be bubbles on top. They're a result of the catalase converting hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. If by the end of the experiment you don't have that, then you're doing it wrong..."

"This is easy stuff. Want to sneak out to the back and make out? That would sure cause some useful reaction." Then he had the audacity to wink.

"What gave you the impression that I'll even want to make out with you? Oh it couldn't possibly been my eyes that gave it away." He smirked moving closer to me. I couldn't help tensing at his closeness. Then he slowly placed a finger on my pinky one. I held my breath as he spoke in a whisper.

"Do you know that catalase is also in animal tissues, especially more in the liver?"

That's what he wanted to say?

I didn't like the smirk that appeared on his face when I glared at him before releasing a deep breath. He kept giving me more facts about the process and about the topic. And I couldn't help being drawn to him and the passion behind his words. Apparently Mr Nice Physique had beauty and brains in his back pocket. It was alarmingly enthralling to watch him. He wasn't dumb like he appeared to be. I hated that I noticed.

"Um hey you... Can you hand me that test tube." I said snapping my fingers at him. He glowered at me.

"You? Seriously? Lanaya you could stop pretending that you don't know my name you know. We both know that you remember it but you still haven't said it." I rolled my eyes. Truth be told, I had been avoiding saying it, pretending like I had forgotten it, but who was I kidding.

"Wait how on earth did you get my name? I never told you that." He put on that self satisfying smile.

"Nothing gets past me. Although I have to say that it cost me an arm and a leg to find out who you are. I mean you did just come here two weeks ago. But you do love to leave a colourful trail behind you don't you?"

"What can I say? I love bright colours." He winked at me.

"And I'm as bright as you'll ever find sweethea...." He stopped when I raised a murderous brow.

"Your confidence sure is unwavering as it seems." He slid across the table to me again, obviously uncaring about my sarcastic remark. He chose to ignore my warning stare.

"Nope. Never. Now just say my name like you're probably doing in your head right now." He said before tracing a light finger on my temple. I couldn't help raising my foot and slammed it on his seemingly expensive sneakers clad one. I felt the satisfaction as my heel made contact with his toes. He groaned bending down to rub his aching toes.

Gosh that felt good.

"You need to stop doing that. And didn't I tell you to be nice to me. What's wrong with you?" Steven had wrapped up his lesson so he was just sitting on his desk doing God-knows what on his phone. He unfortunately couldn't leave the lab until we were all done washing and gently putting back the equipments and the whatnots.

"Like I once told you, this is me being nice so get used to it. And did you want me to say your name?" I smiled exaggeratedly blinking. Awkwardly trying to be seductive I whispered in his ear.

"Red toes."

*************

Mr Wilson, I mean Brian told me that he was a few minutes away from picking up Peter. I decided to take a walk along the main road so they wouldn't miss me. I was thankful that Ashely wouldn't be riding with us anymore. Apparently his friends would be dropping him off.

It probably sucked for him to try to look cool while your parents still drive you places and pick you up as well. I hated it too.

I was on my phone walking as slowly as possible. I had barely left the school property when I suddenly felt someone tapping my shoulder. I yelped turning around and my phone fell with a sickening thud to the ground.

"Hi." The voice said.

"The fuck!" I curse bending down to pick it up.

"Sorry about that. I startled you."

"Yeah no shit Sherlock." I turned my phone around grateful that there were just a few new scratches on the protective glass.

"Your phone is okay." He stated dryly.

"You don't say." I answered just as dryly. He sighed suddenly looking uncomfortable.

"Look Lanaya, I know how you probably feel right now..." I chuckled staring at him. Liam being polite seemed foreign to him. The guy didn't get along with half the class but somehow they still loved him. I could see how some girls looked at him. It just seemed odd to me for some reason. He was an anomaly in his own right. Especially for a nerd. Ish.

"You came here to apologize for being a jackass. Good job." I said patting him gently on his arm. His already scowling face hardened even more. I sighed.

"You aren't here to apologize are you?"

"For what? I didn't do anything to warrant any apology. And even if I did what makes you think I'd even apologize to you?" I hit him at the back of his head.

"You need serious help. But anyway let's get into that tomorrow. Now I'm just curious as to why you came after me." He cleared his throat shifting on his feet. I sighed again. This school would be the death of me. Two weeks in and I was already exhausted to my toes.

"Okay just give it to me straight. Don't make it weird."

"Don't take whatever I'm going to say the wrong way. I don't want you to think like I'm trying to like uhm....come onto you or something or that...." I pulled my hair.

"I just told you not to make it weird!"

"Just listen okay? This is important." I rolled my eyes then nodded.

"Stay away from Alex." That definitely piqued my interest.

"Excuse me?"

"He's not who you think he is. Don't trust him and whatever he says. It's for your own good. Stay away from him. Okay?"

Two chapters in two days!!

Well that's definitely a first.

But what do you think Liam meant. Those were some errie words right there.

And what do you about Lanaya's new name for Alex?

Should we keep it or find another one?
