Ch. 34: On the Road Again/Seeing a Movie

Three days pass. You, Catnap and Kitty have your things packed already. Things you mostly need on the way back to the other side of the continent. You've gotten your clothes you got from a thrift store on your way there, your toiletries, etc. You're leaving, today.

But before you do, you're saying your goodbyes to Huggy and Charlene, since they're staying behind. Huggy has more of a reason to do so than Catnap does. Kitty's got some of her stuff already packed, too. Stuff she needs. Besides, you told her that she can always buy more things for herself in Baltimore and she agreed.

Your car is packed with your stuff, Catnap's stuff and Kitty's stuff. It's not very much either, so you all managed to get it in there. Half of the backseat and the back trunk since Kitty will be sitting in the backseat. You've kept the left side cleared since the driver doesn't need to put their seat back since they are driving. Obviously.

You, Catnap and Kitty are all standing outside and facing Huggy and Charlene since they're staying behind. Huggy has a bigger reason. Besides, if the police back in Baltimore found out about both Catnap's kidnapping crime and Huggy's crime with murdering his girlfriend for cheating on him with his sister Kissy, they'd more likely give Huggy much more time. At least YOU are still alive. Huggy did let Kissy go because she's his sister and he loves her.

You say, "Well. This is it, guys. This is our departure back to Baltimore." Kitty says, "I've always wanted to know what it was like living a simple life. I want to take it easy for a change. Not have to be under the pressure of being something someone sees as a model or an object. I'm ready to be out of here, too."

You say, "Even back in Perth, I've seen models there not being as judged as they did here. Then again, the 70s were a different time. A lot of adults I've seen there had something in their hands that smelled nothing of cigarettes. Now I realize they had weed in their hands. It was all around, mates. All around."

Kitty says, "We were all little kids in the 70s. I'm aware." Huggy says, "Yeah. My dad would pull me out of school a couple of times so he and I could get high. He's dead, now." Catnap says, "So is mine. But mine... deserved it. Mostly for hurting my mom."

You all look at each other. Charlene says, "I'll miss you guys. Take care, okay?" Huggy walks to you and Catnap and pulls you both in for a hug. You hug him back. He says, "I... I'm sorry. I guess I was born for this for real, man. Giving hugs. My name's perfect for it." He sobs. Catnap says, "Oh, Huggy. It's alright, man. We'll keep in touch as much as possible." You say, "That's right."

You all pull apart and Kitty says, "I'll miss you two. Charlene. Thanks for putting us up." Charlene says, "Anytime, Kitty. Anyone in need is welcome. I can sense good and bad. And my parents... are definitely bad people. How unfortunate, huh?" Huggy comes to her and hugs his arms around her. She hugs him back and she says, "I love you so much, Huggy." He says, "I love you, Char."

You all say your goodbyes and you, Catnap and Kitty get in your car... Or Catnap's car. It is his since back in Baltimore, he kidnapped you and the car is his. He's behind the wheel. You're sitting on the passenger's side.

Kitty's in the back behind Catnap since he doesn't have to put his seat back and since he's the one driving. Huggy and Charlene hold each other close and they look at you guys. You all wave and you drive off.

Charlene buries her face into Huggy's chest and sobs. He holds her close and says, "H-hey. It's okay. They'll write to us." She says, "They were so good. I've waited for people like you to come here. My parents suck so goddamn bad."

He says, "It's okay. So does my ex-girlfriend who cheated on me with my sister." She says, "At least you let your sister live." He says, "She's my sister. I love her. I know she has it in her to feel bad. I know Kissy." She nods and they embrace each other.

A couple of hours later, you're practically driving through Nevada. Well, Catnap is driving. The radio is playing No Rain by Blind Melon. You're singing along to it and so is Kitty. Catnap smiles and says, "I'm glad we all have the same taste in music." You say, "Me too, lovey."

Kitty says, "I've always wanted to see what it was like on the other side of the continent." You say, "Less judgmental than LA. I'll say that. I can't say I'm originally from Baltimore. I'm from Australia."

Catnap says, "I think there's a theater nearby at the next exit. How about a movie?" You say, "You know what? Yeah. I hear that new Casper movie's playing in theaters." Catnap says, "I hear Bill Pullman's in it." You say, "Christina Ricci, too." Kitty says, "Casper, anyone?" You all agree on it.

(It's 1995. That's when Casper was released.)

Sometime later, you're all in Las Vegas, Nevada. You found a movie theater there. One of them, at least. There's quite a few there in Vegas. It is the city of casinos and all. You're all one of the cinemas watching the movie that does in fact turn out to be Casper.

(A little clip of the movie.)

You grin as you watch this. You whisper, "This movie is bonza. I love it, so far." Catnap whispers, "Yeah. Bill Pullman is the man. Too bad I didn't get to meet Jack Nicholson while we were in L.A." Kitty whispers, "I loved Christina Ricci as Wednesday." You whisper, "I hear Devon Sawa's in this, too."

Some others in front of you look back and say, "Shh." You, Catnap and Kitty say, "Sorry." They turn back to the screen. You keep watching the movie and you smile as you watch it. You loved the movie so far. And you've always been a fan of Casper. Yes. They had Casper the Friendly Ghost in Australia, too. You watched it on TV as a child.

After the movie, you all get up and leave the theater. You walk out in the lobby and you say, "That was great." Catnap says, "Casper and Kat's romance is almost like ours, but kid friendly." You say, "Darling. We're adults. There's a difference."

(Note: 1995. Both you and Catnap are twenty-six years old. You're both older than Devon Sawa and Christina Ricci were at the time.)

Kitty says, "She does make a point. We're gonna be nearing sixty by the time those two are still in their forties." Catnap says, "Enjoy being young while we can, huh?" You say, "Yeah. I'll say." He looks at you and he grabs your hand. You grab his.

He says, "We'll get through with this." He leans in and whispers in your ear, "I'll get back at Mommy Long Legs if it's the last fucking thing I do. Last person I want to kill." He pulls away. You look at him and you smirk and nod. He nods back. You all head out of the cinema and back on the road.
