Ch. 31: Catnap's Letter (to Dog Day)

Later on at night, you and Catnap are in your room. You're asleep on the bed. Catnap is still up. He's sitting at a small desk, writing something on a piece of paper as he listens to the radio next to him. It's playing Alive by Pearl Jam, but the volume's not high enough to wake anybody. As you sleep, Catnap's got a small lamp on beside him as he writes.

It takes a few minutes, but he finishes and he looks at it. He sighs and whispers, "It'll be risky, but I can't avoid my buddy, anymore. It's been too damn long." He folds it up and picks up an envelope. He sticks the letter in there and he licks the seal.

He seals it shut and he lays it on the table. He writes his address in the top left and Dog Day's address in the middle. The stamp's already on it and he looks at the letter. He says, "I just need to reach out to you, Dog Day." He looks back at you. You're still sound asleep. He stands up and picks the letter up as he does. He whispers, "I'll be right back, Kitten." He walks out of the room.

He gets to the front door, but he looks in the kitchen part and gasps. He sees Huggy raiding the fridge, but what made him gasp was the fact that Huggy was not only up for a midnight snack... but he was butt naked.

Huggy looks over and he says, "Ah! C-Catnap. You scared the shit out of me, man. I didn't think anybody was up, so I didn't bother getting dressed." Catnap looks at him for a second, then looks away saying, "Oh well. No matter. You live here now, anyways."

Huggy says, "You okay, Catnap?" Catnap says, "Yeah. I just... need to stick something in the mailbox for a second." Huggy says, "What is it?" Catnap says, "A letter... to Dog Day. I can't avoid him forever, Huggy. I know deep down he's possibly hurting with my absence. He and I were so close, Huggy. We just... sort of drifted apart afterwards. It'll be risky since (Y/N) and I left Baltimore for reasons, but it needs to be let out."

Huggy says, "Yeah. I know what you mean. Do what you need to do, buddy. I won't stop you. I left for a reason, too. A bigger reason." Catnap says, "I'll be right back." He grabs the mailbox key off the wall. He walks out of the penthouse and heads downstairs.

He gets in the lobby and he walks to the mailboxes. He gets the key out and he unlocks the mailbox to their penthouse address. He opens it and he puts the letter in. He shuts the door and he locks it.

He turns the dial to a red color, stating that the letter needs to be delivered. He sighs and he says, "I'm not avoiding you forever, my canine friend." He walks off and back upstairs to Charlene's penthouse home.

A couple of days later, back in Baltimore. Dog Day is still struggling with his depression. Vicky finally got him to eat a decent meal besides junk food, at least. Family Matters is on TV. He's still not laughing, despite it being a sitcom. Something you laugh at when you watch it. And it was one of his favorite shows, too. Since you and Catnap left Baltimore, he hasn't been himself.

Suddenly, the front door opens and in comes Vicky. She says, "Babe! I'm back from work!" Dog Day looks over to see Vicky. She's got some mail in her hands. She goes through it and says, "Electric bill. Bill. Bill. Junk. A letter from Los Angeles. A... Wait a minute."

She sets the other mail aside and she holds the letter in her hand. She says, "Um... babe. You may want to see this." Dog Day says, "Whatever it is, Vic... I don't think anything's going to get my attention at the moment."

She says, "It's a letter from... Catnap." Dog Day sits up after hearing Catnap's name and he looks over saying, "C-come again?" He gets up and he approaches Vicky. She says, "It's for you. Here." She holds the letter out and he takes it. He looks at it.

He says, "So, that's where they are? L.A.?" She says, "I'm gonna get dressed. I'll leave you to the letter." He says, "Okay." She walks off. Dog Day sits back down on the couch and he opens the envelope. He pulls out a letter and he says, "Catnap actually wrote to me." He sighs and he says, "Let's see what he has to say." He unfolds it and reads it.

"Dear Dog Day,

I'm writing to you to keep in touch with you, buddy. I know it's been so long since you and I have had any conversation, at all. But I have so much I want to say to you, Dog Day. I'm aware you're the one who called the cops on us, leading to me and (Y/N) bailing and moving far away... but I'm not going to avoid you, forever. Why?... Because I love you, buddy. You and I were close until we drifted apart in high school..."

Dog Day sighs and reads more...

"I haven't been the brightest or the most... perfect friend. I'm aware. I'm far away in Santa Ana. Los Angeles, California. I was on the run with (Y/N). But I've thought a lot about you, my friend. I know deep down inside, you possibly miss me too. I know you must be hurting on the inside. I sense it.

All was alright here until having to put up with shallow people who hired us at our current job. (Y/N) and I were lucky to have been labeled attractive in their eyes. Most of L.A is like that. But that's beside the point. The point is, I can't avoid you forever. I just can't. Do you have any idea how shitty I feel just having to be on the run? And let alone having (Y/N) with me.

She and I are in love, but I know she really misses her family. But just know that so far, (Y/N) and I are alright. We're residing in a penthouse with a new friend of ours. And that's not all... We're not the only ones who were on the run.

Turns out, Huggy Wuggy was too. He's changed a lot since the last time we saw him. He's a decent guy, now. He's currently with the woman that owns her penthouse home. Her parents are the ones who hired me and (Y/N) at the restaurant we work at. But those two owners shunned poor Huggy. He kind of let himself go. A bit pudgy and all. But he's not the arrogant jerk that he used to be. I guess being out of high school can change a guy, huh?.."

Dog Day manages a slight laugh. He continues reading the letter from Catnap...

"I regret so many things, Dog Day. And I know writing this letter to you will be risky. But you and I have been so close for years until life did us dirty. I guess sometimes we all got to think and remember this... Nobody can run, forever. I love you, Dog Day. Just know that, buddy. You're like a brother to me. I miss you.

Sincerely, Catnap."

Dog Day feels his eyes welling up in tears and his lip quivering. He grits his teeth and he drops the letter. He puts his hands up to his face and he sobs out of control. He says, "Oh, Catnap! I-I miss you too, buddy! I-I'm so sorry we drifted apart! I love you too, man! S-so much." Vicky comes walking out and she gets to Dog Day to comfort him.
