The first time she saw Oscar was in the summer of two thousand eleven. She even remembered the exact date; August seventeenth. She was at her house in the Mexican capitol, watching the World Cup for twenty year old boys with her parents and her older brother.
There were high hopes put in this group of footballers. And Mexico expected a double World Cup win in one summer. The seventeen year old boys had kept the trophy in the country when they defeated Uruguay at the final just a month earlier in the Estadio Azteca, the official stadium of the national team. She remembered being there watching them, the memories and pride for her country still fresh in her mind.
After having defeated the host country, three goals to one, Mexico was in the semi-finals.
And they were up against none other than the mighty Brazil. Though she believed in the team, she felt the slightest bit uneasy because no matter what, Brazil was Brazil.
Sure Mexico had defeated them on several occasions. But it was also true that everyone was on Brazil's side. And she confirmed that when the game started and the Colombians booed each time the Mexican team had the ball.
She couldn't believe how much hate her team was getting over a football game.
Their only fault had been defeating the host country, Colombia. If it hadn't been the Tri Color, it would have been anyone. Someone had to advance to the semi-final.
As the game continued, she spotted a handsome footballer with the number ten jersey. She was instantly smitten. If she had thought the Mexican team was good looking, and they were, he was a billion times better.
And it was three days later, on August 20th, that she finally learned his name.
Oscar.

From then on, she followed his football career very closely. She never missed a game in which he was playing. She was overjoyed and proud of him when he was offered a contract with Chelsea. As well as sharing a bit of his pain when he missed the chance of equalizing at the summer olympics in London, which the verde amarela ended up losing to Mexico. Although that time she had mixed emotions. She felt sad for Oscar, but glad for her country.
She had also watched every Confederations match with Brazil and was cheering for him during the final when they faced Spain. The Spaniards had a great tournament, but the Brazilians kept the award at home.
And when most of the world was disappointed in the host country for having lost the cup at home, she was still proud of him and continued supporting her favorite footballer.
It was finally one month after the world cup final that she found her golden chance to talk to him. The football team Chelsea had a contest where, if the team twitter account reached a certain amount of followers, then they would select a lucky fan to have dinner with the team member of their choice.
That day, she made a twitter account just for the contest and followed the team account.
She had long since left social media after having been in a long distance relationship with a footballer from Guadalajara when she was seventeen. When the relationship ended badly, she deleted her social media accounts and vowed never to fall in love with a footballer again.
That changed when she finally met her favorite; Oscar.
The team reached four million twitter followers three weeks after the contest was announced and her phone beeped in the middle of the night with a notification from twitter.
When she opened it up, she gasped in surprise when she saw a tweet.
chelseafc: congratulations @america_emboaba! you have been selected to have dinner with a footballer of your choice. we will contact you via private messages to set everything up. #chelseato4million
america_emboaba: omg! i am screaming. thank you. @chelseafc
America waited for the message to appear in her inbox.
Soon, her cellphone beeped once more and she opened her notifications to see a message from Chelsea.
chelseafc: just let us know which player you'd like to hang out with and we'll let you arrange things with him.
america_emboaba: i would love to meet oscar ^.^
chelseafc: we'll have him contact you.
It was mid day in Chelsea, while it was only four in the morning in Mexico city. While she was waiting for something to happen on twitter, her eyes slowly drifted shut and she fell back into the clutches of sleep.
She had been so tired that she didn't hear her phone beep ten minutes later.

It was a Sunday morning and she woke at nine thirty in the morning in order to watch the line-ups for the Toluca vs. Veracruz. Primarily, she would support her favorite team she followed with her father since her childhood; Club America. But their game happened two days prior and Toluca was on her list of teams to support because of two players she admired Isaac 'el conejito' Brizuela and Emilio 'charal' Orrantia.
Her breath caught in her throat when she saw all her new followers and mentions.
But what really caught her eye was one notification.
@oscar11 is now following you!
Since she had been already following him, he was able to immediately send her a private message.
oscar11: hello! :) congratulations on winning the contest for chelsea.
america_emboaba: i can't believe its really you. oh my gosh, i love you!
oscar11: obrigado, linda ^.^
By watching a lot of interviews of him in Portugese, she was able to understand his latest message to her. He was thanking her, and calling her beautiful. But she bit her lip when she remembered her profile picture was one of her cousin Regina, who was a beautiful model with blonde hair and sea green eyes. Regina was the complete opposite of her. She had dark brown eyes and long brunette hair.
Her reason for using Regina's pictures were because she didn't want to be found on twitter by her former boyfriend or the people who knew him because it brought back painful memories of their relationship. She had been forced to leave social media when people would constantly hound her, asking her how it felt to have dated him. Asking what she thought of his new girlfriend.
It was too painful for her to bear.
The nineteen year old knew she had to mention that to him if they were going to go on their date together. He would probably end up finding out anyway. But she didn't know how to get the words out.
oscar11: so can i know your name? :)
america_emboaba: america :p
oscar11: america? like the country? so is that where you're from?
america_emboaba: i'm from mexico :$
oscar11: i'm confused. so then why is your name america?
america_emboaba: i'm named after the football team from my home town. my dad really loves that team, and i love them too.
oscar11: and you support chelsea too? :)
america_emboaba: honestly, i only support them for you ^.^
That day, Oscar and America completely forgot to plan about their meeting together and spent all their time talking. Oscar found this girl to be very interesting and talking to her was so easy for him. By the end of the day, it was like they had known each other for years.
Both of them were glad fate brought them together.
But America was concerned that he thought she was someone she actually wasn't. She was convinced things wouldn't end well if she didn't tell him the truth from the beginning. Then again, if she did, would he understand?
