Chapter Two

♫♬Caleb

5 months later

I strum my hands along my thigh as I'm waiting for Taylor to walk down the staircase. I know this is a big moment for girls.

Slow-mo walking down the staircase and all in their prom dresses - yada yada yada. I'm not in the mood.

Tonight, my band - The Airheads- is playing at our senior prom and as the lead singer and guitarist, I cannot be late. So, if she could get her pretty little behind down these steps that would be great.

I stand at the bottom of the staircase beside Taylors dad and mom as they "ooo" and "aaah" as she walks down the stairs at a snail's pace.

If it was up to me, I wouldn't have even asked her to be my date. But, my dad insisted that he wasn't going to have "no son of his show up to prom with no date". I don't like labels and a "prom date" has way too much commitment around it. But, like many things in my life - my dad insisted which meant I had to.

I swear, if I didn't conform to every single one of his heteronormative roles, he'd have me cast out of the house so fast. Next up after graduation, then college, then married with kids. Can't wait...

"Taylor, you look so beautiful." I tried to hold back my sigh. Giving her a quick kiss on the cheek, I ushered her and me out of the house and into my black Corvette. It was a gift from my dad - that ol' gem. I think it was gifted to me for the one time he caught me fucking Jessica Rodman in our heated jacuzzi in the backyard.

It's a weird mixture of pride and hush money he likes to throw at me.

Whatever the reason is, I'll take it. I like sleeping with girls and I like presents from my dad. It's a win-win. I think he's just happy that for every girl I'm sleeping with, it's another reassurance to him that I'm not totally and completely off that chosen path of his.

As long as I keep my head down, finish school and marry a girl, I'll be able to take over his company one day. Joy.

Taylor is one of my good friends so the ride over is actually fun as we talk about the setlist for the night.

If I'm being honest, there's something else creeping in on my mind tonight and it has nothing to do with the band.

It's my best friend. Or was. Nathan Philips.

Five months ago, we were attached at the hip. I couldn't get enough of his dorky Clark Kent glasses or the way his brown hair sat messily on the top of his head. I enjoyed pulling him out of his head and loosening his ties that he had on himself.

It was fun hanging out with him. That was until damn, Sarah Lockwood entered the picture.

I tried to warn him. She wasn't out for his best interest. I knew girls like her and what made her so different?

I just can't believe they actually started dating and they're actually here - tonight - together.

Nathanial and I haven't talked much since. He's been spending all of his time with her and frankly, I'm sick of it.

I want him to see that she's not so special. He deserves better than her. He's way too good for a girl like her. He's way too good for any girl at our stupid school.

We arrive at our gymnasium which has been decked out to the nines. With the theme Midnight Dreams it looks like it'll be a perfect night to remember. If I cared.

I spot my band on the stage setting up their instruments on the stage and I decide to go and join them. Taylor knew I wasn't going to stick around for long so she was okay when I had to part ways. She's a cool girl. Just not my girl.

I run up to Tony, our second guitarist and vocals, Jason who's on the drums and Richard who plays the keys.

"How are we doing tonight, boys? We're all set." I rush up, strapping my guitar around my shoulder.

"Yeah, we're looking good. Jason found his second set of drumsticks so crisis is averted." Tony laughs. I give him a quick smile as I look around at all the kids on the floor already moving and swaying to the music blasting from the speakers. This is the type of crowd I like to play to. They're ready for a good night and we're only going to make it better. Call me cocky but our band is fucking great at what we do.

"Hey, look who it is." Tony nods his head in the direction past my shoulder. I turn my head and spot exactly who he's laughing at.

Nathanial and Sarah are tucked into each other at the side of the dancefloor. My heart drops as I see them gazing into each others eyes. Absolutely pathetic. What a show.

She has her arms wrapped around his neck and he's slouched over to get a better grip on her waist. I admit - he looks great tonight. Objectively speaking, of course.

In his white buttoned up dress shirt with rolled up sleeves, his skinny black tie and his black dress pants, he looks the part.

I smooth down my red tie as it sits upon my black dress shirt. I don't know why I feel self conscious all of a sudden.

"Poor bastard. Doesn't even realize she's going to dump him right after graduation. They all always do. Nothing lasts for college." Tony sighs, leaning his arm on my shoulder. I can't help but stare at them as they continue to sway to the music.

Nathanial is too good for that. I wish he was more careful with his heart. He never really understood what was best for him.

"Okay, you ready." Jason called out, taking a seat behind his drum set.

"Let's start it up!" I called out. Shaking the feelings off my shoulders, I blocked my mind out from all things Nathanial and got focused on our set.

Starting with our most popular cover of Måneskin - Beggin', we were off!

Our set was great! Sweaty, but great. The crowd was loving us - as per usual. The energy was high and we were giving it our all. Each song we played was better than the last.

We all patted each other on the backs as we said goodbye to the student body. I jumped off the stage to run and grab myself some water. After all that singing, my throat felt scratchy. I couldn't help but notice all the girls eyes on me - and some of the boys too. It was always like this after we played. I was addicted to it. Something about the attention. I loved it!

I almost forgot I lost my dress shirt in the midst of our set. I was only wearing my red tye which was now hanging loosely over my collarbone. I wasn't ashamed of my body in the slightest. I loved working out and keeping myself trimmed and in shape. If the general pop wanted to take a look, I was more than happy to oblige. I didn't work out for nothing.

Walking through the crowd, I made my way to the refreshment table. My eyes drifted over the table as I took big sips from the water bottle I scored. If I could find a sweet anything, I'd be happy. My sweet tooth always calls after a show.

I felt eyes on me. I looked to the end of the table as I saw blue eyes looking back at me.

Sarah Lockwood. What did she want? I took a big gulp of my water, not caring how some of it dripped from my chin on to my chest.

I racked my fingertips through my hair to slick it back on the sides.

"Enjoyed the show?" I called out over the music. Her mouth quirked up at the side.

"Yeah, you know you guys are great. You don't need me to tell you that." She answered, tucking her blonde hair behind her ear.

I wonder where Nathanial was. My eyes narrowed on her. Her eyes didn't waver from mine. What did she want?

"I like being told." I winked, taking another sip.

She pulled her hands back behind her back. I don't know if she realized this made her chest more prominent. Wait, did she know that? Is she hitting on me?

I knew she had a thing for me. I tried telling Nathanial that but did he listen? No.

I sighed. Maybe it was up to me to have to show him that. If he didn't believe me...maybe he needed to be taught.

I slowly walked over to her, brushing past her slowly.

"Where's your shirt?" She laughed looking up at me. She was so short and I know I'm a little taller than Nathanial. Tall guys must be her thing.

"I lost it. Come find it with me." I tilted my head behind her, motioning outside of the gymnasium. She knew perfectly well that my shirt wasn't outside of the gym. But did she follow me anyways? Yup. Am I surprised? Not in the slightest.

"Have you seen Caleb?" I asked Taylor. I knew she was his date to prom tonight. She shook her head as she bounced to the beat of the music. They were playing yet another Weekend song.

I nodded my head and stepped away. I couldn't find him anywhere. Honestly, I wanted to tell him congratulations. That show he played was incredible. I had heard him sing a few times during our hangout sessions but nothing like that. He clearly had been practicing these past 5 months since we've been on the outs.

I hated it. Dating Sarah was probably the biggest thing that has ever happened to me and honestly, it probably wouldn't have happened without him. He put me in the spotlight and I couldn't even share it with him. I missed him. So badly.

Plus, it was incredible seeing him up there on the stage. He looked...great. In his element. Strumming on the guitar, and that raspy voice of his. I tried to ignore the stirring in my stomach when I thought about it. It was obviously just amazement. I was proud of him.

I pushed through the crowd until I made it back up to the stage. Tony and the other bandmates were busy dancing and pushing each other around.

"Hey!" I shouted. It was way louder over here next to the speakers. Their faces dropped when they saw me. I know they didn't particularly like me. I wasn't their friend. Caleb was. And they weren't afraid of letting me know that.

"Yo." Tony answered, crossing his arms over his chest.

"Have you seen Caleb?"

A small smirk crossed Tony's face. It was a little devious. I tried to ignore it. "I think he walked out the gym doors. He must be right in the hallway." He nodded his head in the direction behind me.

"Great, thanks." I muttered turning back around. Weirdo.

I made my way through the crowd once again, slowly making my way out the gym doors.

To think about it, I haven't seen Sarah in awhile either. She had left to get me a bottle of water but I haven't seen her since then.

As though she heard me, I heard her distinctive giggle coming from around the lockers. My stomach felt funny as I kept walking. Who was making her giggle like that? And why was it coming from the same direction as-

Caleb.

There they were. Sitting on a windowsill in the hallway. He had his leg perched up behind her as she sat in between. There they were, with his fingers through her hair.

His eyes closed, kissing my girl.
