"What do you think of this?" Kassidy asked Roni as she stepped out of the dressing room at the clothing store in the mall in a pair of jeans and a burgundy sweater.
"Its cute." Roni smiled "Now try this." Roni said and handed her a black dress and a pair of heels.
"Uh.. No." Kassidy said and shook her head.
"Oh come on it will look great on you!" Roni pleaded.
"I don't do dresses!" Kassidy hissed "And I would break my neck in these."
"Just humor me." Roni said. Kassidy sighed and rolled her eyes and closed the dressing room door and took off the clothes she had on and put on the dress and heels.
"Come on lets see it." Roni said.
"I look like a fucking idiot Roni." Kassidy groaned and looked at herself in the mirror It wasn't too bad, its just she never wore anything like this before. She never had a reason too. She rolled her eyes and opened the dressing room door and stepped out
"Damn!" Roni smirked and took Kassidy's hat off of her and fixed her hair a little.
"Are you two finding anything?" Rogers asked walking up. He took one look at Kassidy and the coffee he had in his hand went to the floor. The black dress was form fitting and he could see all of the curves the she normally hid under jeans and over sized shirts. Her blonde curls cascaded around her bare shoulders and she was definitely a sight to see.
"You okay over there detective?" Kassidy asked with a smirk
"Uh. Yeah.." Rogers said and tried to avert his eyes.
"Yeah. No. I'm sticking with the jeans and sweater." Kassidy said and walked back into the dressing room.
"I saw that detective." Roni smirked as she helped him clean up the coffee he spilled on the floor.
"Saw what?" Rogers asked.
"You were totally checking her out in that dress" Roni grinned. Rogers blushed.
"No. I just.. Haven't seen her in a dress." He said defensively.
"Mmhm." Roni said and put her hands on her hips.
"Don't go there." Rogers said.
"Go where?" Roni asked.
"I don't have feelings for Kassidy." Rogers whispered.
"For the record Detective, I didn't go there. But you did so it's clear you do have feelings for our favorite little mischief maker." Roni said and gave him a sly smile. Rogers rolled his eyes.
"Either way, it's really nice what you are doing for her letting her stay with you, buying her clothes."
"Well.. she only has the one outfit and I came home yesterday to her wearing one of my tee shirts and a pair of my boxers because her clothes were in the wash."
Roni laughed at his discomfort. That had to have been awkward. Kassidy walked out of the dressing room.
"Did you find some clothes?" Rogers asked. Kassidy nodded.
"Yes, and as soon as I put this back in the Hookers R Us section we can go." Kassidy smirked and held up the black dress.
"Oh. Let me." Roni said and took the dress and walked away with it giving Rogers a wink as she left.
"What was that about?" Kassidy asked.
"Oh just..Roni being Roni. It's nothing." Rogers shrugged.
"You really didn't have to do this. You already gave me your spare bedroom." Kassidy smiled.
"You need more clothes."
"I don't know detective yours work nicely too." Kassidy said walking past him and then smirking over her shoulder at his face turning red.
Kassidy sat on the couch in sipping at tea and watching the Investigation Discovery channel. She had been living with Rogers for almost a month now and found herself excited when 5PM rolled around because that usually meant he was coming home soon. She missed him when he was gone and she knew that the Detective was chipping away at the walls she had worked so hard to build to keep him at a distance, she didn't want to get hurt again, but something about him made her feel, safe and comfortable. If he said he was going to be there, he was and that was something she never got with Will. Everything was wild, and chaotic with Will and at the time, she thought it was what she wanted but she didn't. Living with Rogers made her realize this. She liked the feeling of being safe and she liked being in an environment where she felt she had more control even if she was stuck here most of the day alone. she didn't seem to mind it so much anymore because she knew every day, without fail he was coming home, and like clockwork, he strolled through the door. Kassidy greeted him with a smile which he returned and then looked at the TV.
"Again with this?" he asked.
"I love this channel! It's so interesting you should watch it with me." Kassidy suggested.
"I live it, love. No need to watch it." He chuckled and walked into the kitchen.
"What..is this?" He asked and picked up a pot from stove.
"Oh!" Kassidy said and walked into the kitchen. "I was watching the food channel earlier and you always cook for me so I figured I'd try to cook for you." She said. "Don't eat it. It's terrible." She laughed.
"You've been busy today." He smirked.
"I'm starting to get a little restless." Kassidy shrugged. "I'm used to being out and about. I just feel like I should be doing something."
"Well, as soon as I get the people who tried to grab you behind bars you can go out and about on your own again. I'm trying, it's just they are hard people to track down."
"I understand." Kassidy said and gave him a small smile.
"Here I picked this up for you." Rogers said and handed her a bag. Kassidy opened the bag and pulled out a cellphone.
"A phone??" She asked.
"Aye. I figure incase something happens you have a way of contacting me. My numbers already in there. Weavers too if you can't get ahold of me for whatever reason. I put you on my plan so please don't call china." He smirked. Kassidy laughed
"I won't. I don't speak chinese..however I do speak french." Kassidy grinned.
"Do not call france!"
"I was kidding. Relax." Kassidy smiled. "Thank you."
"You're welcome." Rogers said returning her smile.
Later the two of them sat in the living room playing go fish with the condition that if one player asked for a card the other had, that player was allowed to ask the other player anything they wanted.
"Got any fours?" Kassidy asked.
"Nope. Go fish." Rogers smirked.
"Damn." Kassidy muttered and picked up a card from the draw pile
"Do you have any nines?" Rogers asked. Kassidy sighed and handed over her 9.
"Hah! Hmmm.. what to ask Kassidy Cole.. What brought you to the heights?" He asked.
Kassidy smiled. "I lived in a neighborhood just outside the heights, and after my parents, I wanted nothing to do with that neighborhood. My brother Sam, he always talked about this place he had friends who lived over here so it was the only place I felt like I kind of knew." She said.Rogers smiled
"Well the Heights does have its charm. Your turn."
"Got any sixes?" Kassidy asked. Rogers reluctantly handed over his 6.
"Be kind to me." He laughed.
Kassidy thought for a moment.
"Okay this has been bugging me for forever. What the hell is your first name??" She asked.
"I told you it was Detective." Rogers smirked. Kassidy narrowed her eyes.
"Tell me. Detective." She said.
"James." Rogers said.
"James? Huh. I totally had you pegged as a Steve."
"Steve??" Rogers asked. "You thought my name was Steve?"
"Well am I just supposed to be calling you Detective in my head?"
"You think of me often Cole?" Rogers asked.
"Hey! It's not your turn to ask questions." Kassidy said as she tried not to blush.
They had been playing for the last 30 minutes and Kassidy had so far learned, his first name, his favorite color which was blue despite all the black he wore, The reason he wanted to become a cop was to help people and that he had been shot, once. Rogers learned, that Kassidy had actually met Roni's bat, before meeting Roni, and then Weaver the same day after he questioned why she was breaking into Roni's bar in the hospital while she was being treated for a concussion and at some point, neither of them were sure when, but they had stopped playing and were just asking each other question after question
"Why me?" Rogers asked.
"Why you what?" Kassidy asked.
"Why target me for your pranks?" He asked.
"Well, after the whole paint bucket thing..it just seemed like the thing to do." Kassidy smirked. "I like a good chase."
"Do you?" Rogers asked and raised an eyebrow. Kassidy bit her lip.
"Why did you make it your personal goal to arrest me? Most of the guys at the precinct don't even bother with me anymore."
"Because I wanted to get to know you and I figured throwing you in a holding cell was the only way I could do so without you running from me, and then your stubborn ass still wouldn't talk to me."
"You left me in a cell for three days because you wanted to get to know me?" Kassidy asked.
"It was more like 2 and a half Luke told me about your TV break while I was out on lunch." Rogers smirked. Kassidy grinned.
"Well I'm not running now, Detective. What do you want to know?"
"How did you get mixed up with Will?"
"I met Will on a dare, I was with a bunch of people from a party and there was this old abandoned factory supposed to be haunted or some shit, and I was dared to jump the fence, break in and stay the night. Which was no problem for me, but Will decided he was going to and I hated him at first, he was cocky and annoying and never shut up.. Anyways we ended up getting caught, and arrested for trespassing and it ended up being my dad and his partner who answered the call So while Will and I were sitting in the back of the cop car, I decided to piss him off even more and I started kissing Will and..it all kind of just turned into something else from there."
"You made out..with Will in the back of your father's police car? Your father was an officer??"
"Yep." Kassidy smirked.
"So I see your life of crime didn't start in the heights." Rogers chuckled.
"Nope. I was always a little hellion.Dad spent most of his time working.. So it was the only time we really spent time together." Kassidy laughed.
"Do you love him?" Rogers asked.
"Who? Will?.. I thought maybe I did but I don't really think so anymore." Kassidy shrugged.
"What changed your mind?" Rogers asked. Kassidy felt her heart pound in her chest.
"I.. well.. It's just.. I've recently discovered that what I had with Will.. was not..what I wanted after all."
"And what is it that you want?" Rogers asked.
You Kassidy thought but shook her head
"My turn." Kassidy said cutting him off. "What about you and your love life?"
"I don't have much of one. I dated the same girl through high school, almost married her and then found out she was cheating on me and that's about it."
"Is this woman the only woman you've slept with?" Kassidy asked.
"Yes. What about you?" Rogers asked. "Was Will the only person you slept with?"
"No." Kassidy laughed. "He was just the only person where it actually meant something. So..How long has it been then?" Kassidy asked.
"How long has it been since what?"
"Since the last time you did the deed." Kassidy smirked.
"It's been a couple years." Rogers said leaning forward a little.
"Wow, we gotta get you laid." Kassidy giggled.
"Nah, I like it to mean something. I'm not a one and done kind of man." He said and looked up at her with a certain look in his eyes. Kassidy wasn't sure why it suddenly felt that they were auditioning for hell but She was definitely getting warmer and he was too, she could see little beads of sweat glistening on his forehead.
"You never answered my question. What is it that you want?" He asked again leaning forward even more. Kassidy couldn't stop herself from leaning forward over the coffee table.
"I..don't know." She whispered.
"I think you do." Rogers said. They were so close she could feel his breath on her skin. Her cool gray eyes turned dark and she bit her lip.
"Enlighten me..Detective." She said softly Rogers leaned closer his lips were almost touching hers and he fully intended to enlighten her when the timer in the kitchen screeched. Kassidy jumped and let out a startled yelp.
Rogers had forgotten that he had dinner in the oven.
Couldn't have waited one more bloody minute?? He thought and looked at Kassidy who was sitting back on the couch and staring at her hands refusing to look at him. Did that actually almost happen? Rogers stood up. "I'm.. just going to get that." He said.
"Yeah." Kassidy said quietly "You should."
