Ghosts Don't Bleed
"Mrs. Taylor, are you okay? Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. Taylor," Mr. Collins called out in a loud tone, his voice snapping Evelyn out of her frozen state. She flinched, returning to reality after being stunned by the shocking news about DK.
"Mr. Collins, I want to see him. Please help me," Evelyn pleaded in one breath, gripping the bars. Her gestures and facial expressions conveyed a mixture of guilt and regret. Tears welled up in her eyes, much like uninvited guests who arrive unexpectedly and refuse to leave.
"Mrs. Taylor, it's not possible. You can't go anywhere, especially not to the hospital to see Mr. Wilson, because his wife mentioned your name while giving her statement to the police about the incident at the Love-Nest." He replied in a soft yet serious voice, attempting to calm his own panicking mind.
"What?" she said, furrowing her eyebrows and narrowing her teary eyes in confusion. She couldn't understand why Nadia had used her name in the statement when DK had been completely fine when she left the Love-Nest after giving him everything she had brought with her.
"Yes, in her statement, she mentioned that you came there and fought with her husband because he was the lead investigator in your daughter's case. In seeking revenge, you revealed something about his past-particularly concerning his deceased twin-that mentally weakened him. As a result, he didn't have a chance to defend himself against the assailant who attacked him while he was locked in his bedroom. The most shocking part was her suspicion that you may have sent the assailant to kill him in order to find peace in your raging heart."
A bitter chuckle escaped her lips after hearing all the allegations from Mr. Collins, and she shook her head in self-mockery.
"I don't know how I became so stupid in just a few hours that I was stunned to learn Nadia blamed me for the attack on her husband, when I should have realized she wouldn't miss any chance to defeat me, by hook or by crook." She spoke while wiping the tears from her cheeks. A new expression began to replace the previous one on her face-determination to fight her problems with all her strength. She would not stop fighting until her last breath.
"Do you understand the meaning of this attack?" Mr. Collins asked, his expression stern.
"Of course I know. It means DK and I have a common enemy who is taking revenge on us by exploiting our sour relationship. Most importantly, this enemy is aware of our every moment, which clearly indicates that they are hidden among us, disguised as our acquaintances. We need to identify them as soon as possible." Evelyn answered confidently, as the form of 'Chamelyn' took the place of her helpless mother. With her back against the wall, she had no choice but to awaken her inner demon and overcome all her weaknesses.
"Yes, you're right. Please give me information about the guy named Vinson and explain the relationships between the four friends-Leo, Olivia, Vinson, and Edric-so I can find the truth about him as soon as possible. And please don't hide anything from me." He stated while sitting on a chair in front of the holding cell. A male officer approached and placed a small table in front of him. Then a female officer set a laptop on the table. He opened the laptop to record her statement.
Evelyn cast a hesitant glance at him, signaling that she needed privacy while giving her statement about her daughter and her friend's lives.
In response, Mr. Collins signaled to his juniors with a nod, and they obeyed his instructions without a word.
Mr. Collins pressed the voice recording button on the laptop, and Evelyn took a few deep breaths before revealing some truths about her daughter's life.
"Vinson Loredo is one year older than my Oli and two months younger than Edric. Edric and Vinson were both raised in the City of Dreams Orphanage; Vinson's parents abandoned him due to financial difficulties, and Edric lost his parents in a road accident. They were both meritorious students, and their talents helped them gain admission to the same school where Oli and Leo studied, in the same class, at the age of nine. They quickly became best friends.
Vinson and Oli share common characteristics; both love to express their feelings on a blank canvas. Since childhood, they have wanted to become famous artists and open personal art galleries to showcase their emotions through their paintings.
Vinson began doing part-time jobs at the age of thirteen to save money to fulfill his dreams. After completing his studies, he got a job at Empire Capital Bank, a private banking institution, as a manager because he had excelled academically since childhood.
He purchased an apartment in the Lunar Skyline Tower, one of the modern, luxurious buildings in NYC, by taking out a home loan. The tower is located near Snyder Villa and is one of the major projects of L.S. Corporation. Leo helped him buy the apartment.
He was often busy with his banking work, and in his free time, he painted. That was the reason he had little social life and no neighbors. His life revolved around his three friends. He didn't make any friends during his studies or at his workplace. In other words, he was an extremely introverted person, except when it came to his three friends.
Edric was a great chess player from a young age. He said that his mother was also a skilled chess player, and he learned everything from her. He mastered advanced chess at the City of Dreams Orphanage, where every child was nurtured based on their hidden talents. However, he never intended to pursue it as a profession. To earn money, he began giving chess lessons to students by renting one of the guest rooms at the age of fifteen. My daughter helped him find students by promoting his talent on social media.
After completing his studies, he got a job at a food company in Los Angeles, where he settled down.
My daughter began working for the same company but in the NYC branch for almost nine months, while Leo joined his father's business. In the meantime, many incidents occurred in my daughter's and Leo's lives.
They married without my permission because I hated his father, the late Mr. Liam Snyder, who was a member of the Flame group. Although he proved in court that it was his executive assistant who conducted illegal business under his name, I still didn't believe him for a second.
A few months after their wedding, when Olivia received a promotion, Leo encouraged her to seize the opportunity and join the same team as Edric. She accepted the job and began living in the same building as Edric and the other employees, which was provided by their company.
Olivia didn't know what had happened between Leo and Vinson during the past few months.
Two months ago, Leo went to Los Angeles and convinced Olivia to return to NYC to live with him, which she did. However, she noticed that Leo was afraid of the garden at Snyder Villa. When she asked him about it, he replied that some rivals wanted to harm them and had made false medical reports about his health issues to damage his reputation.
Day by day, Leo's fear began to grow, causing Olivia's doubts about him to increase even more. She tried many times to go into the garden, but Leo caught her each time and brought her back to their room with several excuses about their safety.
Unfortunately, on Monday at dawn, she succumbed to her curiosity and ventured into the garden. She opened the storage bench to water the plants, which were still alive. However, upon opening it, she discovered Vinson's lifeless body, covered in dried blood." She spoke the last sentence with a trembling voice, unable to believe that Vinson was no longer in this world.
After wiping her runny nose with the sleeve of her coat, she began to recount the incidents her daughter had told her, filled with hatred and anger toward Leo.
"Leo confessed that he killed Vinson out of jealousy and hid his body in the garden storage bench. This was the main reason he fired all the gardeners. He asked Oli to keep quiet and start a new life with him in another country, but she refused, and an argument ensued between them.
Then Edric arrived to meet them, as he hadn't had the chance to attend their wedding because he had already gone to L.A. The rest of the story, everyone knows, as Oli had told it to the court." Evelyn shared everything about Vinson's life, but she concealed the most important part that connected the three of them. She wanted to keep it a secret, as she had promised her daughter. Although she broke that promise by mentioning Vinson's dead body to the police, she didn't utter a single word about the complicated relationship between the four friends.
Mr. Collins stopped the recording on the laptop and looked at Evelyn with a frustrated expression. "That's it? You don't have anything to say to me?" he asked in disbelief.
"Yes, I have something to say, but I don't want to say it now because..." She paused, locking her eyes with his in a silent plea for him not to ask any further questions. Mr. Collins shook his head and released a deep sigh of disappointment.
Evelyn looked down, closing her eyes. Guilt weighed heavily on her heart as she murmured to herself, "Please forgive me, Oli; I have broken the promise."
"Okay, let me find out about him with this incomplete information," Mr. Collins said in a mocking tone, fixing his gaze on the laptop screen as he typed information about Vinson. Evelyn stared at his face, her eyes unblinking, bracing herself for the outcome of the search regarding Vinson's missing body.
The sound of the keyboard clicking made the atmosphere suffocating, much like a person trapped in a room without windows to breathe. Sweat began to accumulate on Evelyn's forehead as she observed the stunned expression on Mr. Collins's face while he read the information about Vinson on the laptop. She tightened her sweaty, shaky grip on the holding cell bars, and her heart started to beat in an irregular rhythm. Nervously, she gulped and licked her trembling lips several times.
After almost ten minutes, Mr. Collins placed his palms on his face and, shaking his head, said with a puzzled expression, "What should I do now?"
"What happened?" Evelyn asked, her voice trembling with an unknown fear of what was to come.
In response, Mr. Collins said, "I don't think you have any choice but to tell me the whole truth about them that you've been trying to hide from everyone."
After hearing his words, she asked without wasting a second, her lips trembling, "Did you find his dead body?" In her voice, there was a faint hope glimmering like a lamp in a dark room, believing that it might be Vinson's body that the police had found, which could allow her to appeal in the court of appeals for her daughter's innocence.
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Taylor, but ghosts don't bleed," Mr. Collins replied, leaving her confused instead of providing any answers.
"What?" she uttered, her voice filled with confusion that matched her expression.
"You heard me correctly. Ghosts don't bleed-it means Vinson died two months ago from a heart attack while sleeping in his bedroom at his luxurious apartment, Lunar Skyline Tower. The most important news is that Mr. Leo Snyder was the one who handled his cremation and flew to Los Angeles the following week to bring Olivia back to Snyder Villa. So tell me, if he died two months ago, how is it possible that his body was found again in the garden storage bench on Monday dawn? As far as I know, ghosts don't bleed."
