VI
"There. All done."
"Yeah. Thanks Moon!" Tim just won't stop jumping around Brendon.
Why is he so excited?
"Stop calling me that!"
"Shore, shore moon."
"Hey!"
Tim licks Moon.
"Hey!"
"Stop that!"
"Stop what, Moon?"
Brendon sighs. "I officially give up."
"Yeah you better."
"Someone's being na-as-ty..."
"Hey!" Now I'm annoyed.
"But then again, that's why I like you."
I pretend to swat a mosquito.
Brendon takes a glance at his watch. "OMG It's nine fsjskkk!" he exclaims aloud. Even Tim runs under a chair.
"Next time, let me know before scream texting me!" I say. "And so what if it's nine?" I add.
"Nothing, gtg watch my fave tv show."
"Cool! Can I tag along?"
"No!" That was real quick.
Tim lets out a soft whimper. He's really attached to him.
"No, I usually watch it alone..."
"Oh, k." I can't help but connect this to another underworld rumour.
"Well, see you later. Moon."
He pretends to be annoyed but can't help grinning. "Whatever. Good night Ev. Sweet dreams Tim!" he calls from the doorstep before walking out.
I walk over and watch him search for his keys. It's become his habit. When he's nervous.
Once he brings his hand out of one of his pockets, the keys fall out. He grins sheepishly and bends down to pick it.
And that's when I see it.
A medium sized key that looks ancient hangs from a piece of cord fastened around his neck. The Devils Key.
I can't help but let out a loud gasp. Brendon visibly stiffens. He slowly gets back up, his face devoid of any emotion.
I back up against the wall.
"Ev, let me exp..." he starts forward.
"No! Brendon, it's not the Devils Key, is it?" I cut him off.
"Yes it is, but..."
"Why?"
He stares at me incredulously. For once in my life, I had hoped to be wrong...
"Listen, Evelyn, what we have is too weird to go on but too rare to let go of. Let me explain... Please..."he adds.
Tim looks up in an 'I totally saw this coming, no big deal' manner.
Maybe I should've too...
Since I really want to, I nod and let Brendon in.
~
"There you go, ok? Heaven and hell do exist. I've been to heaven once. I was the king of the clouds for a really short while too. Some queen chased me away..."
That was probably mom.
"You're crazy." I pretend to be shocked.
"No Evelyn, you have to believe me. I really like you and I can't let you go."
Tim walks over and lies at his feet. And he can't lay down at anyone other than his masters' feet.
So Brendon is my soulmate... kinda.
"Of course," I scoff.
"I'm serious, Ev. I was actually sent here to manipulate some princess, get her to fall in love with me to control her mother and stuff..."
I freeze. He's talking about me.
And he doesn't know.
"But then I met you. And for a human, you're quite different. You seem like a demon, but are an angel and..."
Should I tell him?
Yes, I should.
"Umm... Brendon?"
"Yes?"
The ground opens up beneath us and Brendon and I start falling into a dark, bottomless pit. On and on and on...
In the dark, Brendon's hands find mine and clasp them.
"Eve, are you an actual angel?"
"Moon, I'm the princess."
Brendon lets out a sigh, but still holds on.
"Well, it's time to face the music..."
"Together," I add.
"I'm all in, Ev."
