0.2 Prologue
Jeongguk went home with only a little money and the food that the shop owner had given him.
He took a shower to feel refreshed. Afterward, he was about to prepare his dinner when he heard the cat he had been expecting that night.
He was debating whether to buy other food with the money or keep it for tomorrow’s breakfast. He had already eaten bread that morning, so he did not want to have it again for dinner.
“Do you eat bread?” he asked the cat, not really expecting an answer. The cat simply sat in front of him, and a few seconds later, it began grooming itself.
“Of course not. You should eat cat food. If you are eating bread, then you just do not have a choice,” said Jeongguk.
He pinched a part of it and threw it on the floor nonetheless. The cat’s attention was caught because of it and walked towards it. It started sniffing the food before letting out its tongue and slowly eating it.
“You and I have no choice but to eat what we have.” Jeongguk sighed. The reason why he fed the cat despite also not having anything is that he feels the same situation with it. He continued throwing away pieces for the cat to eat.
“I realized I have not given you a name yet. Are you a stray? Do you have a name already? Judging how hungry you are, you might be a stray. Since you are orange... And I do not want to obviously name you orange... I’ll just name you, hm...” Jeongguk spoke. “Carrots,” he said.
“Do I like carrots? Kinda. I’d like to name you that because I like you too,” he said. After finishing three pieces, Carrots stopped eating the others and walked towards Jeongguk. Carrots rubbed his head against Jeongguk’s legs repeatedly.
“Aww. Did you like your name?” Jeongguk asked, as if Carrot’s actions meant it understands him.
A few more rubs before Carrots walked away and went through the gate of his home, seemingly disappearing behind it.
“Hey, come back! You’re not gonna sleep here?” he asked. Carrots’ shadow suggested it did look back but still left just a few seconds later.
Despite his parents’ passing, he stayed in this house owned by the parents of his mother. He kept the papers of the land. He’s grateful for having a home despite not having money. His life is still better than anyone who has completely nothing.
Jeongguk went into his room and laid down his bed. “I hope tomorrow’s gonna be good to me,” he whispered to himself. He stared at the ceiling for a few minutes, and before he even realized it, he dozed off.
