Chapter twelve: A Howl in Burnt Vanilla

"What about my strange scent?" Caspian asked curiously, sniffing the air. "I've never been this close to a wolf before, and I've never smelled like one." The rest of the pack exchanged glances, some looking surprised, others curious. "It's because you are not just a wolf, Caspian," Luna explained, stepping forward. "Your spirit guide is a wolf, and that's what allows you to communicate with them as if you were one of them. It also grants you some of their abilities, such as the enhanced sense of smell." Caspian looked at her, his amber eyes wide with wonder. "I never knew."

Luna and Jace always thought their son would be a full-blooded wolf like them, but it seemed that fate had other plans. Caspian's spirit guide was Solaris, a wise and powerful creature who had been watching over him since his birth. This unique connection allowed him to communicate with not only his pack but also the forest spirits that inhabited their lands. As they all stood there, surrounded by their pack, Caspian could feel the weight of responsibility growing heavier, but he also felt a sense of purpose and belonging that he had never known before.

"I was meant to be a full-wolf shifter? My parents are wolf-shifters themselves, right?" Caspian asked, surprised. "I am not sure how I feel about this," he muttered, looking down. "I mean, I am used to being different, but this is..."

Cedar walked over to Caspian and placed his hand on the boy's shoulder. "You are still different, Caspian, but in a way that sets you apart. Being a spirit guide's companion is not an easy path, but it is one that few can walk. You have the power to make a difference in the lives of not only your pack but also the forest spirits themselves. Embrace your uniqueness, my friend, and know that you are loved and supported by all of us." Cedar explained, and Caspian nodded his head, feeling the weight of responsibility lift just a little. He looked around at the other members of his pack, seeing them looking back at him with hope and trust in their eyes. He knew that he had to be strong for them, to guide them through the trials that lay ahead.

"Should we be trying to figure out why I smell like burned vanilla?" Caspian asked, tilting his head to the side. "I mean, I always smell like burnt vanilla my whole life." The pack exchanged glances, unsure of what to make of this new development. "It's a side effect of your spirit guide's energy," Luna explained, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder. "Solaris's presence within you is causing your scent to change, making you stand out from other wolves. But it's also a sign of your strength and connection to the spirit world. Embrace it, Caspian. It's what sets you apart and makes you special."

Caspian didn't want to believe what he was hearing. His parents had never told him about any of this. He felt betrayed and confused. Why hadn't they told him? Were they ashamed of him? Were they trying to hide something? He couldn't help but feel like a burden. He looked down at the ground, trying to process everything. "What's going to happen with Aurora and Soren? Do they have a part in this?" Caspian asked, his voice barely audible over the rustling of leaves in the wind.

Cedar shrugged his shoulders, not knowing the answer to that question, while Jace and Luna exchanged glances. "We don't know for sure," Jace admitted, "but we believe they have a part to play in this. Aurora's scent is unusually strong for a female wolf, and Soren's presence has been disruptive to the pack's dynamics. It's possible that their roles will become more apparent as we continue on this journey." Caspian listened to his parents carefully, trying to make sense of what they were saying. He knew that he had to trust them, but a part of him still felt like there was something they weren't telling him.

"Aurora must have a strong connection with nature and animals; no wonder they are drawn to her. Soren, I am not so sure. He is a strange one. I think we should keep an eye on him and make sure he doesn't cause any trouble." Caspian muttered, his amber eyes still fixed on the ground. He couldn't shake the feeling that something big was about to happen—something that would change not only his life but the lives of everyone in his pack.
