Chapter thirty-six

"What are we going to do with these two items we have on us? the handful of river stones and the sprig of mistletoe? Aurora asked curiously, her blue eyes scanning the surrounding forest. "We should find a place to put them down, so we can focus on finding the hidden realm." Soren replied, setting the items on a mossy rock beside them.

Caspian picked up the sprig of mistletoe and examined it curiously. "I've read about mistletoe in some of the ancient scrolls I've found. It's said to have magical properties when combined with charcoal. Perhaps it still holds some power, even without the charcoal." He placed the mistletoe back down, careful not to damage it, and began to search for a safe place to hide it.

"That's better," Caspian said, finally finding a small hollow in a tree trunk. He carefully placed the mistletoe inside, making sure it wouldn't be disturbed. "There. That should keep it safe until we can find a way to use it properly." He stood up, brushing the dirt from his hands, and turned to Oak. "How about the river stones? Should we keep them or find a place to leave them as well?"

Oak glanced at the river stones and shrugged. "They're just rocks. I don't think they'll hurt anything if we leave them here." She knelt down beside them, picking up a handful of soft loam from the forest floor. "Here, we can use this to cover them up a bit. That way, if someone happens to find them, they won't think anything of it." She scattered the dirt over the stones, patting it down gently.

Soren grinned and knelt beside Oak. "Good thinking. Now, let's find this hidden realm and see what secrets it holds." With renewed determination, they continued through the forest, following the panther's whispered directions. The further they ventured, the more the trees seemed to close in around them, until it felt as if they were walking through a dense thicket of living wood and vines. The air grew thick with the scent of earth and moss, and the calls of strange, unfamiliar birds filled the air.

"We're here," the panther said, her voice barely above a whisper. The trees parted to reveal a small clearing at the center of a natural amphitheater. In the center of the clearing stood a massive, ancient tree, its gnarled roots twisting and intertwining as if they were the remains of some great battle long past. The air around them seemed to hum with power, and the leaves of the surrounding trees rustled in a nonexistent breeze. "This is the entrance to the hidden realm. The spirits who guard this place are more powerful than any you've encountered thus far. You must approach them with respect and humility," she explains, her ears twisting nervously. "Do not attempt to enter unless you are prepared to face the consequences."

Caspian, Soren, Aurora, and Oak glared at each other worriedly. They all knew that the panther's words were no empty threat. The spirits that guarded this hidden realm were legendary for their power and wrath. But they had come too far to turn back now. They took a deep breath and nodded solemnly, preparing themselves for whatever awaited them.
