Chapter thirty-one
Soren's Pov:
Soren had no idea where to start when it came to finding the tear in Luna. Caspian wanted him to go with Aurora and find the tear. He had hoped that his best friend and Oak had found the tear of Luna before they did, if only they knew where to look. They only walked a few miles away from their rest stop; they went to the north to see if they could find anything there, while Caspian and Oak went to the south. It was a long shot, but it was better than nothing.
"There's no way we can find the tear of Luna here," Soren complained, running his long fingers through his curly black hair. He looked around. Aurora was sitting on a rock; she had her back to him. She had her knees up, her elbows resting on them, and her chin on her intertwined fingers. "I mean, how can we just find it?" he asked. He walked up to her, sitting down next to her.
Soren sighed, feeling more lost than ever. He looked around again, frustration mounting in his chest. "I don't know. Maybe we should try to ask someone? Maybe someone here knows where it is." Aurora glanced over at him, her blue eyes filled with concern. "I don't know, but I hope Caspian and Oak have more luck than we do. Should we follow them to the south?" she asks, gesturing in the direction they'd come from.
Soren knew if he found anything up in the north, it would take more time, so they decided to follow Caspian and Oak's path and head south. They walked for a few more hours, the sun beginning to set over the hilly horizon, casting a warm glow over the trees and the forest floor. The air grew colder as the last rays of the sun disappeared, the crisp chill in the air reminding them that winter was indeed coming. They continued on, the silence between them only broken by the occasional rustle of leaves or the hoot of an owl.
"I can't believe this is our first time being out of the pack," Aurora said softly, breaking the silence as they walked. "It feels so strange not having everyone around us." Soren nodded in agreement, the weight of their responsibility beginning to settle heavily on his shoulders. They walked on for a while longer, the darkness of the night closing in around them like a thick blanket.
"I don't remember this place; I can't find our scent here. It's like we're strangers in our own world," Soren muttered, shivering slightly from the cold. "I wish Caspian and Oak would hurry up. I don't want to be out here alone." He tugged at his black hoodie nervously.
Aurora looked at him with pleading eyes, wishing she could make him feel better. "We're not alone. We're together. And we'll find the tear. I know we will." Soren smiled softly at her, trying to reassure her as well. They continued on, their footsteps crunching on the fallen leaves beneath them.
The cool air danced around them as they walked deeper into the forest. The sound of their footsteps was the only noise that filled the air, save for the occasional rustle of leaves or the hoot of an owl. As the darkness enveloped them, Soren felt a strange sense of unease creep up his spine. He glanced over at Aurora, her face illuminated only by the faint light of the moon. He wondered if she felt it too.
"Do you feel that?" he asked worriedly, his hazel eyes trying to make out her expression in the dark.
"Like someone or something is watching us?" Aurora shivered slightly, her blue eyes darting around them. Not even she can figure it out, despite the fact that they are nocturnal wolf-shifters.
Soren pulled her closer to his warm body, protecting her. "Yeah, it's like someone or something is watching us. I don't like it. We should keep moving; we don't want to get lost in the dark." He tried to sound more confident than he felt, but the truth was, he was scared too. Aurora nodded, feeling a shiver run down her spine.
"Okay," Aurora whispered, following close behind Soren as they continued through the dark forest. The air was thick with tension, and she could feel her heart racing in her chest. She couldn't help but wonder what it was they were feeling and what it was that seemed to be watching them. The thought sent a shiver down her spine.
"Could it be a guardian of the forest?" Aurora asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "A protective spirit or something?" Soren shook his head, not entirely convinced. "I don't know. It feels different. Almost malevolent. It's watching us for some sinister reason." He paused, scanning the darkness around them. "Maybe we should stop for a moment and see if it goes away." Aurora nodded, her heart racing. They stood still, eyes darting around, trying to pierce the veil of darkness that surrounded them. The silence was deafening, broken only by the occasional creak of a branch or the hoot of an owl.
She moved closer to Soren, her body brushing against his. "Do you think it's just our imagination?" she whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "Maybe we're just feeling jumpy because it's so dark and quiet." Soren wished he could reassure her, but the feeling of being watched only seemed to grow stronger. "Should we keep moving?" he asked, not sure whether he really wanted to or not.
Aurora nodded her head, not wanting to stay in a dangerous forest any longer than they had to. They both took a deep breath and continued to walk, the silence becoming almost unbearable. Suddenly, they heard a rustling in the bushes nearby. They froze, their hearts racing as they tried to determine what it was. Soren was about to shift in order to protect Aurora when a figure emerged from the shadows.
It had sleek black fur, and its eyes glowed an eerie shade of emerald. It was a panther; she didn't look threatening or violent; she watched them curiously from the shadows before them. Aurora and Soren gave her a confused expression on their faces.
"a panther?" Soren whispered, his eyes widening in surprise. "I've heard of panthers being able to see in the dark, but I've never seen one before." Aurora nodded in agreement, her gaze fixed on the beautiful creature before them. "Maybe she's here to guide us or protect us from whatever we're feeling watched." The panther continued to stare at them, unblinking, as if considering their words. After a moment, she seemed to nod her head, as if in agreement.
"I see you two seeking the tear of Luna. We had two wolf-shifters seeking the same thing as you do. They are still alive and finding ingredients to restore life to the tear. The panther spoke; her voice was soft and melodic, like a gentle wind through the trees. "Come with me; I will guide you to them. I think you know them both." She offered, and Soren and Aurora shared a confused look but followed the panther nonetheless. The creature seemed to be friendly and helpful.
"You mean Caspian and Oak? We haven't heard from them for a while now. The four of us are meant to find the tear of Luna ourselves; we hoped they had more luck than we did."Soren explained as he followed the panther deeper into the forest. Aurora nodded in agreement, feeling a mixture of hope and anxiety in her chest. She couldn't help but wonder if they were truly meant to find the tear on their own or if they were supposed to work together.
