Chapter seven: Whispers in the Woods

Aurora tried her best not to giggle at the attempted seriousness radiating off Soren's face as he pulled off the plan without being caught in daylight. She knows everybody in the pack is asleep, but with their sense of smell and good hearing, it would be easy for someone to wake up and come across them. Thankfully, they are lucky this time.

As they continued their journey, the air grew colder and the forest thicker, with the trees almost forming a canopy above their heads. Aurora could hear the rustling of leaves and the chattering of squirrels as they scurried about their daily business. She wondered what sort of animals they would encounter in this unexplored territory.

"Do you think we'll encounter animals here?" Aurora quizzed, her Blue eyes shining with excitement. "I mean, it's been so long since I've seen a wolf, not from our pack. It'd be really cool to meet some new friends." Soren shrugged and said, "Who knows, maybe we'll find a whole new pack out here. That'd be amazing, wouldn't it, Caspian?" Caspian nodded in agreement, "It certainly would. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. For now, let's just focus on enjoying the journey and taking in all that this new territory has to offer."

Aurora shrugged her shoulders lightly, the movement causing her blond fur to ripple in the cool air. "Well, either way, it's going to be an adventure. I can't wait to see what we find." She followed Soren deeper into the woods, her tail wagging gently behind her. The further they went, the more she realized how different this part of the forest was from the rest. The trees were older and more twisted; their branches intertwined to form a labyrinth of sorts. The underbrush was thick and tangled, making it difficult to navigate without constant vigilance.

"Should I shift into my human form?" Aurora whispered, looking at Soren and Caspian. "It'd be easier to navigate through the thick brush in human form." Soren nodded. "Yes, that's a good idea. I and Caspian are already in our human forms, so you can shift too if you want." Aurora nodded, closing her eyes and concentrating on the familiar tingling sensation that always accompanied her transformations. As she shifted back into her human form, she felt more nimble and agile, ready to tackle the obstacles of the forest.

Her wavy blonde hair fell around her shoulders as she stood up on all fours, the cool air brushing against her bare skin. The forest seemed to grow quieter around them as they continued their journey, as if the very trees were holding their breath in anticipation of what they might find. The underbrush gave way to a small clearing, revealing a small stream gently winding its way through the center. Aurora and Soren exchanged looks before silently crouching down beside the water, dipping their hands in to drink.

"Now I know how you two feel," Caspian chuckled, crouching down beside them. "I've never been good at sneaking around either. But at least I'm getting better." The three of them shared a brief laugh before continuing their trek through the forest. As they walked, Aurora couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. She glanced over her shoulder every few moments but saw nothing but the towering trees and the occasional bird fluttering through the branches.

"Do you guys feel that?" She asks caustically, and Aurora notices the hairs on the back of her neck standing up as she asks. "Like we're being watched?" Soren nodded, his eyes darting about as he scanned the treetops. "I've had that feeling for a while now." Caspian glanced around as well, his ears twitching. "We should be careful. There could be other wolves out here, ones that aren't as friendly as we are."
