Chapter 70 | return to wammys
"Give me the controller!"
"No way you die in the first five seconds!"
A play fight was going down on the floor of the playroom in front of the TV. The video game controller being held out of reach of the short tempted blonde by a teasing red head.
"Hey! Don't knock my tower over!"
Having almost whacked the block tower taller than the smallest boy over, Matt let his guard down to apologise and Mello used that chance to snatch the controller off him.
"HEY! Ugh... sorry Near" Matt sighed.
"Dong worry about it, but if you knock this over you're rebuilding it" Near replied.
"What is it the bloody Empire State Building? It's taller than you"
"Oi enough about stupid block towers. Watch me fuck up this boss" Mello jumped in.
Before he could press start, the boys were all snapped from their conversation upon hearing a car door close outside.
"Who's here? No one ever comes here..." Matt muttered.
"What time is it?" Near asked.
"Midday- wait THEY'RE BACK! Mello exclaimed.
Dropping everything they had the boys scrambled to their feet and booked it down the hallway, down the spiral staircase and swung around the corner to the front doors of the orphanage.
"No running in the hal- you know what there's no stopping them..." Roger called from his office as they ran past.
And he was right there was no stopping them. Busting the front doors open they ran down the front courtyard and up to the driveway where before you could even say a word to them, they jumped on you and L knocking you both down.
"AH! Ok ok! We missed you too!" You laughed.
"Can I breathe please?" L added.
Their tight grip on you both was loosened and one by one you got back on your feet dusting the grass off your clothes.
"That took way longer than you said it would!" Matt scolded.
"Well the case didn't exactly go to plan" L replied.
Watari put the bags from the boot of the car down next to you and L to take inside, the boys now noticing his presence.
"Hey Mr wammy" they greeted.
"I won't be seeing any bad behaviour reports from Roger with your names on them will I?" He asked.
They were silent for a moment, giving each other worried glances.
"No..." Mello said, suspiciously.
God what have they done this time? Bet it was one of Mellos stupid plans to try and sneak out to the skatepark at night.
"L can you take my backpack so I can get my suitcase?"
Suddenly remembering there'd be new kids here, they boys turned their attention to the girls voice coming from the boot of the car.
"Here I'll take them both" L replied, walking around to the back of the car to grab the girls bags.
You also took the time to open the doors to the backseat and unbuckle boy from his car seat as he was still to small to go without one.
"L grab his bags too. I'll take them in when I've unbuckled him" you said.
"Ok!"
The pile of suitcases was topped off with another backpack, obviously belonging to a kid. The boys were rather exited to meet the new kids.
Having taken boy out of his car seat, you put him down and closed the door behind you. He looked around at the new surroundings already inquisitive. Maki appeared from around the other side of the car too, holding her teddy and one of her bags.
"Alright. Let's get everything inside and then we can do introductions" you said.
Jumping at the chance to skip to the introductions, the boys helped bring everything in, and once bags were put away in rooms and Watari was off to fill out paperwork for Maki and Boy you all ended up in the study room where successor classes were held, sitting around a table.
"Alright, you've already heard about each other but boys this is Maki and... well you're the ones who were gonna give him a name soo..?" You began.
Boy perked up, remembering he gets a proper name today.
"You give me name?" He asked the successors.
"We thought about this the whole time you were in Japan" Matt said.
"We had a few options but ended up setting it with a vote from the rest of the kids" Mello added.
Boy looked existed, he couldn't wait to have a proper name.
"Considering he's from Thailand we looked up Thai names and settled on Preecha, it means intelligence and wisdom. After all he was the one that solved the equation for the antidote" Near explained.
You were rather impressed. Not only did they look into meaning they also looked into country of origin, they'd picked well that's for sure.
"I... Preecha?" Boy... or rather, Preecha asked.
"If you want" L replied.
He nodded happily, over the moon with joy to finally have a real name.
"I Preecha!" He smiled.
He was a cute kid, he'd gotten more expressive recently and you were very proud of that.
"Now that that's settled. Maki, Preecha this is Mello, Matt and Near. Currently the only three of L's successors" you introduced.
"It's nice to meet you" Maki said politely, slightly bowing before remembering she was in England now and that kind of formality want really a thing.
"Nice meet you!" Preecha added.
"We've been so exited to meet you guys, it's relate to get new kids here" Matt said.
"We'll make sure you like it here. It's fun I promise" Near said.
"If anyone crosses you I'll beat them up for you" Mello added.
You snickered at Mellos already protective words. L sighed and gently bopped him in the head.
"I appreciate the protectiveness but no violence mr anger issues" L teased.
"Tch, fine. Mr Eyebags" Mello teased back.
Maki and Preecha giggled at the interaction, happy to know they weren't the only ones who playfully roasted L.
"Geez everyone is roasting me nowadays" L sighed.
"Just because you rescued us doesn't mean we won't roast you noodle spine" Maki snickered.
"Hey I like this kid she's got good roasts" Matt laughed.
L gave them all a playful death glare and nudged your arm to tell you off for laughing and encouraging him. But Matt was right, Maki did have good roasts.
"You guys are successors?" Maki asked.
"Yeah, we started at the beginning of the year" Near replied.
"When I'm old enough I wanna join you. L said he'd let me if things go well with therapy, please teach me everything you know when I join in two years!"
They looked exited, it wasn't often new kids came to wammys at all, but one wanted to join them being successors? That was exiting.
"The second you turn 12 we'll teach you everything we know about passing L's classes. He's a good teacher teacher... Assuming he hasn't fallen asleep on the desk-" Mello said.
"That was ONE time after a long case, ok?" L complained.
They'd never let him live that down. And neither would you really, it was rare he slept but when he did it was known to be in strange places and positions.
"Alright, I want you boys to show them around while we go unpack everything. It's almost lunch too so after that take them to get food and introduce them to everyone. They'll start classes in a few weeks once they've settled in and we've sorted therapy" you said.
The kids got up, already becoming friends and getting exited to be working together.
"Oh- Maki your jacket is ripped" Matt pointed out.
She looked over her shoulder at the hoodie she was wearing that was a bit too big for her. The one she was wearing over her school clothes when she first came to you and L.
"What- no! When did that happen?" She said, sounding sad.
"Probably in the first getaway chase, it looks fixable" you said.
"My mum got me this for Christmas the year before she died with my teddy... I was hoping it'd stay safe forever..." she pouted.
"We can fix it! Our friend Linda taught us how to sew" Matt said.
"Yeah once we've had lunch and stuff we can go borrow her sewing stuff and stitch it up!" Mello added.
Maki smiled, first day here and she was already making friends.
"Thanks guys" she replied.
They began to head out of the room to go show the newbies around, but L spoke up before they'd all gone.
"Near"
Near stopped and looked over his shoulder.
"Keep an eye on Preecha, and maybe lend him some of your toys" L said.
Near being the tiny genius he was, was able to tell that meant Preecha was quite into toys as well, and had a similar learning style to Near. The two of them would get along well.
"I will, come on Preecha let's go" he said, leading the new youngest member of the group out with the rest of the gang.
You sighed in relief, it went well. Case was over and finally you could have some time to sleep and go back to normal. Well, as normal as your life was.
"Alright, better go unpack" you said.
"I never thought I'd be saying this but for once I want to sleep for a whole week straight. That case tired me out... too much physical exercise" L replied.
"What's this? Great and powerful L wants to sleep? He's not going to say 'but justice blah blah blah..."
"Haha, very funny. Let's unpack and pass the hell out for a while, you're my human teddy bear anyway I can't sleep without you"
"Aw, such a suck up" you teased, placing a kiss on his lips.
"Again, we're childhood sweethearts. I think I'm allowed to be a suck up" he replied, placing a second kiss on your lips.
Taking his hand you both went down the twisting hallways and up staircases to get to L's room that you'd basically moved into eve since you started dating to unpack and sleep. You still had your own childhood room, but at some point you should probably move your stuff and merge with L's room to free up space for new kids.
You'd have to add to that little case file of yours hidden under the floorboards you'd started over a decade ago too after these developments. Even if you found out the answer to case file L Lawliet years ago when you realised you loved him, you had a feeling something would happen soon that would require another final entry into the file.
Five year old you started that file with a dream of being a detective and figuring out for feelings for your childhood sweetheart, you in your twenties didn't think all these crazy developments would happen.
Which reminded you...
"Hey hun..." you began.
"Yeah?" L replied.
"What exactly did B say to you?"
He was silent for a moment.
"It's... confusing. I'll tell you as we unpack because it's a long story..."
