Chapter 61 | run for it

"Goddamnit this is going to take all night..." you sighed reading the map you'd picked up from a tourist stop.

You'd made it past the checks apart from one final one at the top of the hill, and by now it was getting dark. There was a summer festival on at one of the shrines, and just past that was the road that lead to the lab. You were so close, almost there.

"We can probably make it there by tomorrow if we just keep going" You said.

"The last check is coming up, get back under the seat" L said.

Handing him the map and slipping back under the seat with boy, you approached the last stop. Surely, you'd made it this far, surely it'd work out. You felt the van come to a stop and heard the officer approach the vehicle. You held your breath.

"What's your business up here?" He said.

"Family holiday, for the festival" suruga replied.

"Can I see some ID"

Again he handed over the fake ID, but this time there was pause.

"Does your wife have some?"

What? This wasn't asked before... although part of you wanted to laugh at the fact L was still fooling everyone into thinking he was a girl, the rest of you was on edge. This wasn't part of the plan.

"N-no she doesn't since I'm driving and we're only here for a few days to see her family and the festival" suruga said.

You had a bad feeling about this. Every check was the same why was the last one different?

"Ma'am even a train pass with to name on it will do. You have nothing?" The officer said.

You didn't hear L speak, his voice would give it away. But he did shake his head. This was starting to look suspicious.

"Look were just here for a few days in personal matters we didn't think these checks would even be here" suruga said.

"I know but it's a precaution. Let me talk to the higher ups real quick"

Hearing the officer walk away, you and everyone else in the van were already panicking. Something was up, every check but this one was the same...

"What's with the extra rule?" Suruga whispered.

"Maybe the others were just being lazy?" Maki added.

"No this is blue ship we're talking about... maybe they're making the last check harder in hopes we'd have our guard down" L said.

No... it was all too convenient. They knew, they probably knew a while ago and were just leading you into a false sense of security so you'd hand over Maki willingly.

"They know" you said.

"They can't! We've passed every-" suruga began.

"No she's right, they've led us on..." Watari added.

Hearing the officer come back, you bit your tongue. The first half of stops you probably did trick successfully, but someone down the line saw through the disguises and told the others who lead you into this trap. How did you not see that coming?

"I'm going to have to ask you to come with me" the officer said.

"Sir we really have to go" suruga replied.

"Why don't you let your... wife talk?"

He knew. He so knew. Trying to get L to talk and reveal his masculinity was the nail in the coffin. He absolutely knew. You felt like your whole body was tense in fear, you held boy tightly in an almost motherly instinct.

"Go on... what's stopping you?"

L stayed silent, knowing full well the game was up. He wasn't going down that easily though. Very quietly you poked your head out from under the seat just out of view to look around and form a plan.

"Sir she just... can't talk because of uh... an injury" suruga tried to lie.

The officer hasn't noticed you or boy, and from your view at the back of the van under the seat, you noticed something though the back window. Cars, tinted windows slowly approaching behind you. Blue ship members definitely.

Reaching into one of the supply bags, you dig around for something. Maki noticed out of the corner of her eye and watched you, wondering what your plan was. She coughed, alerting L who glanced back to see what you were doing while suruga tried to talk out of the situation.

You pulled the strobe bombs L made before at the cafe out, and quickly slid back under the seat reaching an arm under his seat to roll them to him. Boy seemed to understand the situation and stayed impressively quiet for a tired kid.

L felt the bombs gently hit the back of his feet as he'd been sitting normally to sell the act that he wasn't actually L all this time. Careful and nonchalantly he picked one up while the officer was distracted.

L tapped surugas shoulder and when he turned to look at L he ditched the bomb out the window at the officer and when it hit the ground bright blinding strobe lights began to flash.

"DRIVE" he exclaimed.

Suruga caught on and booked it, slamming on the pedals and speeding off. And just like that another car chase has started.

"You're a goddamn legend (y/n) I LOVE you" L said, commending your quick thinking.

You got out from under the seats and bags and quickly grabbed the one with the strobe bombs and threw it over your shoulder.

"We need to split up again! Have them think we're all in the car when the kids are actually somewhere else!" You said.

"How do we split up when where being chased?" Suruga asked.

You thought for a moment, but L jumped in.

"Find a wooded path, me and (y/n) will take the kids and jump out. We'll run through the festival while you loose them and you can track our location through my burner phone to pick us up when we're safe again. Then we make it to the lab and ditch the van" L explained.

"Hang on we're jumping out of a MOVING van?" Maki said.

"Yes. Don't worry if we fall you'll land on me and you won't be hurt"

Maki seemed reasonably scared. Pulling off the wig and pulling on a coat, L climbed into the back seat with Maki, swapping spots with Watari. He unbuckled her seat belt and pulled her into his arms.

"What if we jump in the wrong spot and get caught?" She asked.

"We'll be fine, I promise" L replied.

"Suruga! Turn right and go through the woods! There's a patch of mossy ground surrounded by trees we can jump from without being spotted!" You called.

Suruga turned a sharp right, blue ships cars right on your tail. You drove into the wooded area, and the evening light was just enough to see through the trees.

"Jump just past the hiking trail and if you go straight through the woods you'll end up at the shrine" Watari said.

"Ok! Ready?" You said.

"Ready" L replied.

"I'm scared!" Maki whined.

"It'll be alright, L's the words greatest detective for a reason right?" You smiled.

You opened the sliding side door, watching the daunting sight of the woods speeding past.

"Coming up on the jump zone..." suruga said.

You took out three strobe bombs, ready to throw, tightly gripping boy in your free arm.

"NOW!" Suruga exclaimed.

You ditched the bombs at the cars behind you, blinding the drivers and hearing tries skid on the road as they swerved for control. Holding boy in your arms tightly, you jumped and landed on your side in the moss. A bit of a thud and some dirt, but no injuries. Not too far away, you heard Maki scream in fear when L jumped with her and landed in the moss with a tumble. Neither harmed.

Getting up, the four of you booked it into the woods to get into the hiking trail that lead to the festival.

"No one saw?" You questioned.

Looking back, L didn't see anyone following you.

"No we made it. I told you we'd be alright" L told maki.

"That was terrifying" she said.

"I promise once we get to the lab we can end this whole thing and go home. We just need to run a little longer"
