Chapter 58 | found him

Hidden away in a 24 hour Internet cafe, it was almost midnight and you'd been running all day.

Maki and Boy slept leaning up against L, who was half asleep himself. He'd been up all week trying to get this case done, now he was exhausted. You on the other hand were doing a little research on one of the computers while you waited for Watari to come pick you up. Luckily you'd lost the cops for the time being.

What were you looking for? L's actual father.

When he told you that trauma memory a while ago, he said that his birth mother cheated on his birth father while she was in work in Japan.

So that means L's biological dad could still be out there, still someone out there in Japan. He might not even know he had a son.

Of course, Watari being the one who raised the orphaned L, and practically adopted him L definitely had a very deep father son-relationship with him. But knowing who his birth father was could definitely help him process some things, so you planned to try and track him down while you were in Japan.

You knew he was an accountant, but other than that you had nothing to go off. So you devised a plan. Find legal documents about L's birth mothers work at the time, and try and find out who she was meeting with through that. If she's married L's other dad by then, he'd have the last name Lawliet like L did.

Wait... does that mean L has three dads? Watari, his brother father and his mothers husband? Well, you could hardly call his mother and her husband parents with how abusive they were. So we'll call it two dads, Watari and his birth dad.

Hiding behind VPNs and firewalls, you scrolled through databases for accounting companies in England containing the name Lawliet. That way you could find his mother.

So far no luck, you were having to go back very far into the system. Back to the 80s when not much was recorded online, but you hoped there might be scans of old documents or something.

"Come on... give me a Lawliet..." you mumbled to yourself.

"Hm?" A half asleep L said hearing his name.

"No not you Lawliet, Lawliet as in the last name"

"Oh..." he yawned, falling back asleep.

Calling L by his last name was confusing sometimes. But hey, Lawliet is a beautiful name. Finally, you found the name you were looking for.

A woman with the last name Lawliet, working in the 80s at Winchester accountants. Clicking the file, you pulled up the information. This was definitely the woman. Her ID photo bore a striking resemblance to L's British side.

Same bone structure, same paleness, same fluffy hair. It was definitely his birth mother. It was weird seeing what she looked like, you'd never really thought about the concept of L's mother. Although you probably should have at some point considering his raging mummy issues.

At least he had a father figure in Watari growing up. But no mother figure.

"Sent to Japan in February... yeah that checks out. Nine months later is October when mr spooky was born" you mumbled to yourself.

Following links to documents about her time in Japan, you were beginning to loose hope only seeing accounting documents. That was until your saw a signature. A Mr Hitoshi was working with her. Could that be the guy?

You opened a new page and typed his name into the search engine, multiple people with the same name popping up. You needed to find one that was an accountant...

Damn you felt like a freaking spy up in here.

After scrolling for a while, you found one. Who worked at the same company listed on the documents from Winchester.

"Ah- finally. This him?" You again, mumbled to yourself.

Pulling up his work ID, you looked it over. It seemed to match up. Dates and details seemed to be correct. But when you scrolled and saw his ID picture, you were sold that this was the guy.

He had WICKED bad Eyebags. So that's where L gets it.

It had to be him, the resemblance in L's Japanese side was too strong.

You looked down at L, asleep with the kids cuddles up to him. God, after taking care of Mello, Matt and Near, he really had developed a dad instinct huh?

Pulling out your phone, you dailed the phone number listed on his ID. Hopefully he still worked there...

It rang for a moment, and to your surprise, there was an answer.

"Hello, this is Mr Hitoshi of Osaka accounting"

Oh my god it worked.

"Hello, I know this might seem strange but did you happen to work with Winchester accounting in the 80s?" You asked.

He seemed a bit confused, but continued to answer in curiosity.

"Yes, I did"

"Did you work with a Mrs Lawliet?"

"I did work with a MISS Lawliet. Are you in need of documents form the time? I can ask the head office-"

"No, no it's just. Ok listen I know is sounds wild but... ok, I'm (y/n) and my boyfriend found out his mother had an affair with an accountant in Japan. I think you might be it, so I think my boyfriend is your son"

He was silent for a moment. Taking that in.

"She... told me she was single. And that she was protected... you're telling me I have a son I didn't even know about?" He said.

"I'm sure it's you. All the signs point to it. We're in Japan right now for other reasons but I thought I'd look into it and everything falls into place too perfectly. I understand if you don't have use for this information, I just wanted to be sure that's all"

"He'd be... in his 20s now right? My god I've had a son for 20 years and didn't even know... I met a girl after that happened and we're married now but we were never able to have kids. I can't believe I had one all this time..."

It was working, your plan was working. You found L's real dad...

"It's kind of a confusing situation, we're both orphans and he has an adoptive father now but ever since those childhood memories came back it's been bugging us not knowing what ever happened to his birth dad. So I went looking for you so he wouldn't have to re-open traumatic wounds regarding his mother. He hasn't seen her since he was 5. He had to process some trauma in order to even remember the fact he was an affair baby but he's... quite successful now" you explained.

"That's wonderful! What does he do?"

Well... couldn't just say 'hey your son is L' now could you?

"He's a... private investigator. We both are"

"My god I have a son in his 20s and he's a private investigator with a girlfriend and- wow. I presume you called to try and arrange a meeting? I'd be glad to" he said.

"That'd be great. We just want some closure that's all, we can't come anytime soon since we're here on work but while we are here we'll make time before we leave" you explained.

"That's wonderful. I'm sure my wife would be pleased to know even if we couldn't have kids, I still have one out here. When you can make some time I'll be waiting a call back I expect?"

"Absolutely. Thank you so much for this"

"It means a lot knowing I have a son, even if I haven't met him. It was hard on us to know we couldn't have kids but this... makes things a bit better. A very pleasant surprise"

So it seems not only would it be closure for L, but for his father too. Knowing the person who created you, and didn't abuse you would be a nice fact to have to help process that trauma his mother and her husband left. And it seems Mr Hitoshi would be glad to meet Watari too and thank him for taking care of L in his absence.

Watari would always be dad to L, but maybe he can have another dad as well.

"I'll call as soon as we have time to arrange something" you said.

"I look forward to it, but one more thing. What did she end up naming him?"

"She called him... Ryuzaki" you had to lie.

"Ryuzaki, a Japanese name. Seems like a little nod to me there"
