Chapter 30 | re-evaluation

So much has happened in the past few months, As death, B going missing and three new kids coming to the orphanage. You barely had time to think, there was just so much going on. But finally the new boys were settling into classes, they were becoming more independent and adventurous and starting to act like kids again. Of course they'd gotten pretty attached to you, whenever they had a nightmare they'd come to you or L. They'd call for you and L when they needed help with something and they'd come to you to play games.

At least once a week one of them would end up crawling into your bed after a nightmare, at least one of them would come to you with a graze on their knee from playing outside, at least one of them would ask you for help with their maths work.

L had always maintained he wasn't the biggest fan of kids, and it showed. When he first came to the orphanage he got in trouble a lot for fighting the other kids, he really didn't get along well with young children. But these kids were different, they were growing on him and you could tell, he wouldn't admit it but you could see the smile on his face when they asked about being a detective.

But finally a day had come where you could just relax, the kids were out on a field trip to the museum as they were learning about dinosaurs. L had wrapped up a recent case, you didn't have any kidnapping to unravel and it was overall a very chill day.

A day you could actually be a couple. It's been more than a month and you'd barely been able to give each other attention because of all the crazy stuff that's been going on. But things were finally winding down.

L was still pretty awkward with relationships. He could accept the kisses but got shy to give a kiss unless it was on the hand or cheek. He would go all shy when you tried to cuddle up to him and overall he still didn't really know how to verbally express his love for you.

He felt that 'I love you' was too simple, like it wasn't enough of a phrase. So when he realised he needed to be more involved and loving, he turned to other phrases. He was on the hunt for something to express how he truly felt. You were the one that's been by his side for over a decade, this was more than just a schoolgirl crush.

Meanwhile you'd decided to spend this chill day off together, when you started dating you told L to be prepared for lots of physical affection, and you weren't kidding when you said that. You were back out at you guessed it- the swings. The place you'd been going for years now to talk. But now that you were closer, and dating it was less awkward to be all touchy feel-y with each other.

"This is a bad idea (y/n)" L said.

"It'll be fine! Now stay still" you replied.

You grabbed onto the chains of the swings and squished your legs through the gap between L's arms holding onto the chains and the swing. So you were sitting in his lap facing him.

"You're gonna fall off" he said.

"Not if I hold on" you replied.

You kicked your legs to start the swing up, and before you knew it you were successfully swinging back and fourth on the same swing. Of course, this meant L had to sit normally, but he can sacrifice some deductive abilities for a while. You weren't worried about breaking the swing either, the chains where metal, no way they'd break.

"So, you exited for New Years?" You asked.

"Kind of, I wanna put this whole year behind us, it's been hectic. Expect for the whole relationship thing, that can stay" he replied.

"Man... I can't believe we're almost 18. It feels like yesterday we were colouring in pictures of puppies on my bedroom floor"

"I know, it's scary. But hey we'll be legal, that means we can travel on cases more often"

You were pretty exited about that, travelling the world catching criminals with L sounded so much fun.

"If were legal, you can learn to drive properly" you said.

"Absolutely not, last time I had lessons I almost died, I am never getting behind the wheel again" he replied.

You laughed at his words, he was always a hopeless driver. That boy could cause 7 car crashes in a row if he wasn't supervised.

"Guess I'll be the one driving you around" you replied.

"That's if you pass your test, but knowing your track record of perfect scores you will. I mean, you're my successor and the fourth greatest detective in the world. If I never created Coil and Denevue, you'd be the second"

"Wow, I'll actually be beating you in something for once"

"Don't get used to it, you know I hate losing"

"Bring it" you smirked.

You were stating to get pins and needles in your legs from the chains pressing against your legs so you began to drag your feet against the sand to stop the swings.

"But... I think it would be useful to know how to fly a plane or helicopter..." L said.

"Excuse me what?"

"Think about it, the bigger the cases we take get, the more car chases will happen. The more we'll have to be out under alias"

He had a point, but it's pretty darn hard to learn to fly. It takes years of practice and he can't even drive a car properly.

"I'm not saying don't try, but you can barely drive L" you said, getting off the swings and shaking the blood back into your feet.

"If you'll be the one driving on land, I'll fly" he sassed, getting off the swing.

You walked over to the climbing frame to sit on the ropes, climbing to the top and sitting under the ropes on one of the hanging platforms.

"But you know what? Road tripping around different counties with you for cases will be fun. Think about it. We can rent a ute, dive around to random towns, fill the back with pillows and stop at drive ins... get a hotel and build a blanket fort, wake up the next day and just keep driving, listening to our favourite songs and solving cases along the way..." you said.

He smiled at you as you talked, liking the idea of just the two of you travelling the world and seeing the sights as you locked criminals up. Words couldn't even describe how exited he was to spend his life with you.

Even if a criminal that enslaved half the world arose in the future, and you had to work day after day, pulling week long all nighters to catch them. He'd still look forward to the next day as long as you were there with him.

"Of course we better stick about until the boys grow a bit older, and become more independent. Like it or not we're pretty much their caretakers now, and I bet your ass if we try and leave for a case, Watari would tag along because you can't take care of yourself for shit. And to be fair I'm pretty bad at taking care of myself too, but that won't stop us from sneaking out at night to see the sights and go to fancy restaurants where we order nothing but deserts" you said.

You looked over at him, just happily gazing at you and listening to you talk. This relationship has really broken down his walls, he was so much more emotional and comfortable with you. He was finally starting to understand his emotions.

"What?" You laughed.

"You seem to know exactly what you want to do when we eventually leave the orphanage" he smiled.

"Well yeah, we're so close to being adults, when we're finally able to go out into the world, we can have so muck fun. Of course it's great here, but I want to see the world you know?" You said.

"You know what we should do?"

"What?"

"Buy a camera"

"A camera?"

"We can get a camera, and film and take photos of all our travels, fill up multiple photo albums and when we're all old and dying we can look back on everything and get all nostalgic" he said.

You thought for a moment, it was a good idea. Documenting everything would be a fun way to remember. If you're going to travel all over the world for cases you may as well have fun doing it, and have something to remember it by.

"Well, when the shops are open tomorrow, let's go get a camera. There's no better place to start all this than the place we first met right?" You said.

He smiled, loving how passionate about everything you were.

"Sounds good" he replied.

You picked your legs up and turned to sit facing him, giving him a smile and placing a hand on his cheek and pulling him in, placing a gentle kiss on his lips. He immediately went red, getting all shy as usual. You giggled at his reaction and interlocked your fingers with his.

"I love you" you said.

"I love you is too simple to say to someone like you, how about... you're the light of my life?"

This time, it was your turn to blush.
