Chapter 28| new recruits

Today you meet three new kids, you'd been assigned to help them settle in. L was helping, even though he wasn't the biggest fan of children, he was doing it for you. Three kids would be a bit much to handle alone when you're not even in your 20s yet.

You were called up to the front office and when you arrived you saw three very little kids sitting on the floor playing with some blocks, Watari and Roger watching them.

"Ah, there you two are" Roger said.

The kids looked over at the door and gave you worried eyes.

"Thank you for helping out, I didn't expect you to be on board L" Watari said.

"(Y/n) talked me into it" he replied.

"I figured. Ok, this is Mail, Mihael and Nate, but we'll be calling them Mello, Matt and Near"

"Mello, Matt and Near got it" you said.

Mello was pretty tall for his age, he has blonde hair down to his shoulders, wore a block hoodie and pants and had really bright blue eyes. He seemed the most interested in you. Matt was wearing white and black stripes and grey sweatpants, he had blue eyes, bright red hair and a bandaid on his cheek. He also had a few freckles across his cheeks. Then there was Near, the smallest. He was obviously pretty shy. He has white hair and wore all white pyjamas.

"Boys, this is (y/n) and L. They'll be helping look after you from now on. They're the oldest kids here so if you need anything, find either them or us" Roger said.

Mello was the first to drop his building blocks and speak up.

"Woah, you're sure tall!" He said, pointing to L.

He wasn't wrong, of L were to actually stand up straight for once he's be taller than Watari.

"I guess I just got lucky growing up" he replied.

You could already tell Mello was going to be the most talkative.

"Ok, they're going to show you around and then you can go play until lunch alright?" Watari said.

They boys nodded, they got up and walked over to you, eager to go and play. But Near seemed to be having some trouble. Usually three year olds could walk by then, but if you remembered correctly, he was the one neglected by his parents, so he probably hadn't learnt to walk or talk properly. He could stand and all, but was pretty wobbly on his feet.

You leaned down to his height and held out your arms.

"Want me to carry you?" You asked.

He nodded, stumbling into your arms for you to pick him up. And off you went, down the halls with two kids trailing behind you and one in your arms.

"Hey, if you're L does that mean you're that super smart police guy?" Matt asked, tugging ok L's sleeve.

"Yeah, just keep it a secret ok? No one else can know" he replied.

"Why not?" Mello asked.

L didn't exactly know how to explain the fact he'd be killed if he was found out to children, so he looked over at you to take over.

"Because if anyone finds out, bad guys will try and hunt us! And we can't catch bad guys if the bad guys have us!" You said.

"Ok! We'll keep it a secret!" Matt said, excitedly.

These boys seemed to already see L as some kind of superhero.

You reached the main part of the orphanage, ready to give a tour.

"Ok, in that room is the kitchen where all the adults cook, and down that way is the mess hall where he eat. If you go through that door you go to the backyard" you explained.

You made your way around the corner.

"In there are the bathrooms and down here are all the bedrooms" L added.

You walked a little further down the hall.

"Ok, these are your rooms"

You opened one of the doors and stepped inside.

"Matt, this will be your room. It looks boring now but you can decorate it. We'll all go out to get you guys some more clothes and toys later this week" you explained.

"Can I get a kite! I've always wanted a kite!" He asked, excitedly.

"Sure, I'll put that on the list"

Next you went into Mellos room.

"Mello this is your room"

He looked around and seemed to already be designing what he's put on the walls in his head.

"Can I have glow in the dark planets on the roof?" He asked.

"Ok, I'm a bit short so L will probably have to put them up"

"If a used a step ladder I could probably reach it, sure we'll do that" L said.

Finally you went into Nears room.

"And Near, this is your room. Do you want anything to decorate it with?" You asked.

He silently looked around and inspected the room.

"Teddies..." he said, in a small voice.

"We can definitely do that" you smiled back.

You left the room and walked a little further down the hall.

"And these rooms are ours, this one is my room" you said, opening the door.

The boys looked very fascinated at all the stuff you had. A radio, posters, a computer, drawing stuff and lots of pillows.

"Wooaahh! You have so much stuff!" Mello gasped.

"I've lived here for 11 years, I've collected a lot of stuff. I've won a lot of at at the arcade"

"THERES AN ARCADE?" Matt exclaimed.

"Down the road next to the shops, yeah"

"Can we go?!"

"When we go shopping sure"

"Yes! I'm really good at space invaders! I'll win so much stuff!"

He was a gamer huh? You could tell what he'd spend his pocket money on when they started to get it.

Finally you opened the door to L's room and the boys gasped at all the computers inside.

"Wooahhh! Look at all the computers!" Mello gasped.

"Are they for detective stuff?" Matt asked.

"Yeah, it's how I talk to the police and catch criminals" L explained.

"It's really dark..." Near spoke up.

He wasn't wrong, L did quite like to keep the curtains drawn tightly shut.

"I'm not the biggest fan of the light, it hurts my eyes"

"Me too"

You were starting to see some similarities between Near and L. Baby L who came into the orphanage all those years ago was just as shy and quiet. You got the feeling L would be the main inspiration for Nears development, especially if you both had to watch him.

Lastly, you went back down the hall and into the playroom.

"And finally here's the playroom. We'll show you the class rooms and library later, they're being used at the moment" you said.

You put Near down and the other boys instantly jumped into the toy box, looking for something to do. Near, however, stayed at your feet. He was too shy to really play with the others who were so loud and outgoing.

The boys managed to dig out a box of lego, that box gave you so many memories man... all the times 6 year old you stepped on a damn lego brick...

You decided to play with them for a while and make sure they were all getting along. So you sat down with them to build, L joining you.

So all five of you sat in a circle, stacking bricks onto each other to make buildings. Near was pretty quiet as he made his tower, letting L help him. Those two were like personality clones...

"Hey, do you guys wanna go to the park after lunch?" You asked.

"Yeah!" Matt cheered.

"There there swings?" Mello asked.

"Three of them!"

"Cool I wanna come!"

You turned to Near, giving him a warm smile.

"Wanna come too?"

He nodded in approval. You looked up at L, exchanging a look. The both of you knew Near would take a little work to get talking more. He probably had some trust issues.

Matt and Mello seemed to be pretty happy after all they've been through. Maybe it was the fact they were finally out of their awful families or maybe their mind was trying to suppress everything. But you do remember being told Mello can get angry easily, so that was something to be weary off.

"Hey (y/n)" Matt said.

"Yeah?"

"What was the room with the sign on it?"

You froze for a moment, that was As room... you can't just tell a 5 year old that there was a dead body in there for a while... you and L gave each other worried looks, but L being a quick thinker came up with something.

"The kid that lives in there is on a long holiday, so we can't go in there until he comes back..." he said.

"Where's he gone?"

"Uh... to see his friends... he's living with the for a little while"

That seemed to be a good enough answer for the child, so no more questions came of it. Good thinking L...

To break the awkward tension, you spoke up.

"Matt, what did you do to your cheek? Why is there a bandaid?"

He dropped his lego and got all exited.

"When the police were keeping us they took us to the park, and I flung myself off the swings! I hit myself on the edge of the sand pit but that doesn't matter because I got super high!"

"He did! I was on top of the slide and he almost got as high as me, it was so cool!" Mello jumped on.

Sounds like something you'd do honestly...

You know, maybe babysitting these guys wouldn't be that bad after all.
