Chapter 1 | a promise

The orphanage was small and cosy, a safe and warm environment for kids. It's jarrah floorboards that didn't make a singe creek, the lacy curtains on the windows let the light through and shine on the blue rug in the play room in the morning. The layout of the orphanage was like a family home, with many bedrooms. Everyone sat at the dinner table for breakfast, lunch and dinner, even if you were sick you'd never miss it.

Whammy's house was a place made for the homeless and abandoned children that weren't accepted because of their minds, it was your home, you'd been here since you were a baby. It was the best place to be as a homeless and abandoned child. Every child at whammy's felt like they were wanted due to the amount of love they were given, they were all healthy and happy, it was a place that felt like it was a fairytale land. It had big jacaranda trees that always seemed to be in bloom around the perimeters, the one at the very back with a wooden swing on it. It had a large grassy yard for the kids to play on, it had a trail of stepping stones through the middle that lead to a ring of rose bushes where a fountain sat inside. All the girls and some of the boys liked to believe fairies lived there.

Your room was small and cosy, your drawers in one corner and your desk in another that was scattered with detailed colouring books. Your bed was against the wall by the window, it had baby blue bed sheets and multiple fluffy pillows, along with your beloved toy dog, sprinkles was his name.

You (y/n) (l/n), were 5 years old and two months, you had little friends, since you preferred to be alone, but you held no grudge against anyone. You likes to spend your time in the trees out back or in your room, colouring in your books. Today was different from the rest, you were sitting on the floor, surrounded by coloured pencils as you coloured in a mermaid, when there was a knock at the door.

"Come in!" You said, sitting up.

It was Mr. Whammy the man that opened the door.

"Hello (y/n), I'd like you to meet a new boy, and keep him company" he said.

You spotted a boy with messy black hair and wrapped up in a brown jacket and blue scarf hiding behind Mr. Whammy.

You got up and walked over to them.

"This is Lawliet. But since not many kids would be able to pronounce that we'll calm him L"

The small boy didn't say anything, just waved and looked down at his feet.

"He's been on the streets for a while now so please be kind to him. I think you two could be good friends. Can you please get to know him and show him around" Mr. Whammy asked.

"Uh-huh! I'll be the best friend ever!" You replied.

"Thank you very much, I'll leave you two to talk"

And with that Mr. Whammy left, and you were alone with the new boy. You were exited to make a new friend, you may not like people that much, but you wanted at least one friend to hang out with.

"It's nice to meet you! I'm (y/n). How old are you?" You smiled.

"F-five" he replied, in a quiet voice.

"Really? So am I! We can be best friends! I have lots of colouring books we can do, and lots of toys too! How do you pronounce your name? I don't want to mess it up"

"Law-li-et" he said, sounding out his name.

It was a little tricky for a five year old.

"L-law-li-et. Got it!"

You grabbed his arm gently and pulled him to where you were sitting.

"If your here you must be smart. I'm not the smartest one here but this place is for all the smart kids. You'll fit in here for sure! Oh, Can you help me finish this mermaid?"

You handed him a blue pencil, which he took hesitantly. He looked at the pencil then at the mermaid, his eyes lighting up. Without even uttering a word, he got to work, colouring in the mermaids tail. You smiled and picked up a pink pencil, beginning to colour in the mermaids top.

"You'll have fun here, we're all one big family at whammy's. We have swings and trees to climb in out the back, and we have so much stuff to play with. Mr. whammy and Mr. Roger always teach us lots of cool things so we can be whatever we want when we grow up. What do you want to be?"

"A detective..." he said, in a small voice.

"COOL! I still don't know what I want to be. I'd love to be a mermaid but I know that I can't do that as a job. Maybe we could be detectives together!" You replied.

He looked up at you and his eyes lit up.

"Really?"

"Yeah! We could catch the bad guys and lock them up!"

He suddenly got shy and hid his face in his scarf, that was already too long for him. You tilted your head in confusion, wondering what made him so suddenly shy. You took this time to get a good look at him.

His fringe was getting a little long, so it covered his eyes a little bit, he had exaggerated eyebags from lack of sleep, he was short, but you could tell he'd end up really tall. His eyes were a deep and dark blue, almost black, his hair spiked up a little, as if it was defying gravity. He was very small and very cute.

You smiled as you thought of a way to get his attention again.

"Do you want to have a sleepover tonight?" You asked.

He turned to face you with a surprised but exited look on his face.

"Ok! I've never had a sleepover before" he replied.

"We can stay up late and eat candy. Don't tell Mr Wammy or Mr Roger, but I have a secret box of candy under my bed"

"Candy? What kind?"

His eyes lit up.

"Lollipops and caramel drops"

"Mr Wammy gave me some candy on the way here... it was really good!" He smiled.

It was quiet for a moment as he looked like he was thinking about something.

"(Y/n)... do you like me?"

You weren't expecting that... but you did, you may have only known each other for a few minutes, but he was very nice and very cute.

"Yeah! You're really nice and so cute!" You smiled.

"C-cute? Is that a good thing?"

"Yeah! Cute can mean two things. One means that something is precious and small and makes you go 'awwww' and the other is love cute, all the girls say it when they have a crush on someone, it means you find them good looking in a milder way. We're too young to be called other stuff... all the older girls say it though" you explained.

"What cute am I?" He asked.

"Hmmm... both!"

"I-I am?"

"Yeah! You're very cute!"

He looked down at his hands.

"I've never been called cute before" he mumbled.

You tilted you head in confusion again, he looked sad.

"No ones ever liked me before... no ones ever loved me before..."

You felt bad for the poor boy. He's been through what you did, what everyone in the orphanage did. The feeling when you felt like you weren't wanted, and that you didn't mean anything. You wanted to make him feel loved.

"Let's make a promise" you said.

"What kind of promise?" He asked.

"One that says we will always love each other no matter what! And that we'll always be there for each other, is saw it in one of my books"

You grabbed his hands and held them in yours.

"I'll go first, I (y/n) (l/n), promise to help you and be your best friend forever, I'll be there when your sad and when you're happy! No matter what!"

"Ok... I L Lawliet... um, promise to be the best friend ever, and make sure you're safe, I'll always be there for you, no matter what"

"There, now we can keep that promise and we can be best friends forever!"

He brought his knees up to his chest and hugged them to his body, his cheeks turning pink.

"I've never felt love... but I think I like it..."

He was an interesting boy. He made you curious... maybe it was time to open a case, on him.
