7. Moving Forward
Case File #7
Sharna got out of her cab and walked into the police department, she still knew her way there and everyone knew her, so they allowed her to walk freely. She went to Detective Howard's office which looked slightly different there was a new desk outside in which a secretary sat there.
"I'm here to meet Detective Young" Sharna told her
"Take a seat, I'll go in to check if he's got some time for you, but if he doesn't, can we arrange a meeting for tomorrow?" she said politely
"Believe me he's got time. You seem to not know me, but I can't blame you, you're new. I worked here for 2 whole years and I know what that sentence means exactly, he's napping"
The secretary looked down shyly "I didn't mean to be rude to you," Sharna said "but I just have really important news"
"Ok, I'll go talk to him" she left and opened the door to his office
"Tell him it's Sharna Davis" Sharna said as the woman disappeared into the office and in a couple of minutes the door was open and the secretary came out along with Detective Howard"
"I heard your voice blabbing from inside, but I couldn't believe you'd actually be here. What the hell are you doing here Davis?"
"Aren't you gonna let me in first?" Sharna raised an eyebrow
He led her in and asked the secretary to make them coffee
"What do you think of my new secretary?" He asked as he sat down
"I was never a secretary, but she seems nice"
"So what brings you now to my office?"
"I know who did it, I solved the crime and I have proof and everything"
"How so?"
"Jessica murdered her husband because she thought he was cheating on her with Clair, thus placing the poison in her bag which is also homemade so she wouldn't get caught. Clair said she can testify about her relationship with Steve and.."
"That's not enough" Howard said proudly
"I know, but wait for it. Daniel fisher, the bartender who poured their drinks and left a little while before the murder says that Jessica came into the kitchen moments before he served them the drinks and asked him to check the food of green peppers, because she's allergic, she could've slipped the poison then. It all adds up"
"If that's so, we'll need to talk to them again and make sure"
"I also have these" she said as she handed him the folders "Steve's partners Derek and William were planning to kick him out apparently or at least lead the company themselves, these documents can prove it"
"How did you get them?" He asked anxiously
"Tina gave them to me"
"The missing secretary"
"Yes, she sent them to me before leaving, she didn't want to go down with them. So what do you think Detective?"
"Good for you" he said
"That's it? I solved the crime, the murder of an important businessman and all I get is good for you" she said in a low-pitched voice pretending to be him.
"And I solved like 100. What were you expecting? That I'd throw you a party?" He said sarcastically
"I don't know what I was expecting, I just thought it would feel more rewarding when I finally prove you wrong"
He laughed "I've never said you had no potential"
"You've said worse, so just admit it that I'm a real Detective now" She was angry
"you are, now leave"
Sharna got up to walk to the door, but she turned around saying "Aren't you just a little proud though?"
"Get out and take care you're a Detective now and soon you'll have enemies"
Sharna left proudly, she just made Detective Howard Young admit that she's a real detective! "I should've recorded it though" she thought
She then went outside and called Fred, so that she can explain to him what Daniel did and pay his debt.
"Hey" she said
"How are your investigations going?"
"Good actually, but I wanted to ask you if you've got some time to meet, I need to talk to you about something urgently"
"Come at Fred's, I'm already there"
After they hung up, she grabbed another cab to Fred's. "I really need to get myself a car" she thought
She arrived at the place and as soon as she entered, she found him sitting in one of the tables counting the week's money and working on the balance sheet.
"He must've figured out the missing money" she said to herself then walked over to him
"I suck at accounting" he said "I took several courses before opening the place, but there are just so many numbers and tables"
"I wish I could help, but I suck with numbers" she grabbed a chair and sat opposing him
"You'll help me plenty when you solve this, so I can open up the place again"
"I already did, but the police still needs to look into it"
"I knew you could do it, your father would've been proud" he smiled at her
"Thank you" she smiled back "So I came here to talk to you about Daniel Fisher"
"Oh I know why he left, he stole from me" he said sadly
"I know, I talked to him" she then told him all about his daughter then asked him if she could pay his debt instead.
"Of course I will not allow you to do so" he said "and I'll definitely not tell the police, but I'd rather pay it myself"
"That's so kind of you, but why?"
"He's good and he doesn't deserve to go to prison even if it'll cost me"
"Maybe you could get him to work for you again and eventually pay his debt"
"Maybe, but save your money"
"Thank you, you know you could be saving her life"
"I hope so." Freddy was a gentleman and always felt like a father to Sharna "So who did it after all?"
"I wouldn't wanna ruin the surprise" she laughed and eventually left and got home for dinner with Emily and Tyler.
"Your late" Emily said as soon as Sharna arrived
"but I have good news"
"You solved it, didn't you"
"Maybe I did, yes" she smiled from ear to ear
"I knew you would" Emily hugged her
"Congrats" Tyler said "It's a weird thing to celebrate though" he laughed
"I tell myself that everyday, but I think people nowadays are so ruthless that they don't even think about the consequence of their actions and they're so willing to kill and cross the line, I guess I just lost hope in humanity"
"And that's why you do your job, to help imprison those who lost their humanity" Emily said enthusiastically
"And now you're one step closer to finding who killed your father" Tyler added
"I wish" Sharna said "Thank you guys for supporting me through out those last few weeks when I really needed you, but I don't want to be such a heavy guest, so I called Wyatt and he knows a realtor and tomorrow we're going apartment shopping"
"You were never a heavy guest" Emily said "We loved having you here"
"And I loved being here, but I can't stay here forever. Tyler would kill me" Sharna joked
"I never said so, I grew fond of watching crime TV with you"
Sharna was excited for getting back on track and as Tyler said, she was closer to finding out what really happened to her dad.
Next morning, she woke up and got ready to go with Wyatt for their search; he came and picked her up with his car.
"I know this really good real estate guy that can show you a few places, I talked to him yesterday about your budget and taste and we're going to meet him now"
"I haven't lived alone in a long time"
"Are you gonna be afraid of the boogeyman hiding under your bed" he joked
"No, but I'll have to cook, clean and do everything. Don't you want a roommate instead?"
"Definitely not you" he laughed
"What's wrong with me"
"I love you, you're my sister, but you're very moody and it scares me sometime"
"I'm not scary" she hit him kiddingly
"Maybe you're saving that place for someone special?" Sharna smirked
"Only to make you feel better, yes"
He turned right then started parking under a building. "That's the first one" he said
"Doesn't look so encouraging" she said a bit disappointed
"Let's just go check it out then judge it"
They got out of the car and walked to the gate, a tall man wearing a grey suit was waiting there with 3 cups of coffee.
He waved at them as they approached "I got you coffee"
"Thanks" Sharna said
"Nice to meet you in person, I'm Nick" He smiled at them
"Let's begin then" Added Wyatt
Nick walked and Sharna and Wyatt followed, when they were at a distance from him, Sharna whispered to Wyatt "Your friend is so handsome"
"He's not my friend, I just met the guy just like you"
"Well, I wish I was his friend" she laughed
"Did you say something?" Nick turned around
"Nothing, it smells a little funny in here" Sharna said
"It's because a lot of college students live in this building, it still smells like partying" he joked
They walked into the apartment which looked good and was nicely furnished, but Sharna didn't want to live next to parties especially that she was going to use the apartment as her office as well, so she told Nick about her concerns and he said he had the perfect place for her.
They went later to another building in a much fancier neighborhood. The apartment was great, but a little over-budget, so she decided to get it only semi-furnished. She was really excited about the place and was going to move there by the end of the week.
Wyatt drove her back to Emily's and stayed there for dinner too, Sharna told them the news and they sat for dinner.
While eating, they heard a knock on the door and Emily opened the door only to find a letter left on the door mat and no one there. She picked up the letter and read it, then walked back to them.
"Sharna" she said "I found that, it's for you"
Sharna took it and read it out "Detective Sharna, I heard about you and I think I need your help, I will contact you again later"
"I think it'll just be another prank" Sharna said
"Or customer" Emily added
Two days later, Sharna woke up, still hasn't moved out yet, and went downstairs to get the news paper and there it was, "The murder of businessman Steve solved" she read the article and found that Detective Howard didn't forget to mention her name and she was for once really grateful to him.
She went back upstairs to continue packing her stuff when her phone rang, it was Johnny.
"Hello Detective" he said
"Hey"
"I read the article, you're famous now"
"Not that much" she laughed
"I still think, it's something worth a celebration. Have you eaten breakfast yet?"
"Not yet, have you?"
"No, what a coincidence" he said sarcastically "wanna go get some breakfast?"
"Our place?"
"Yes, I'll be there to reserve out booth"
She hanged up and got dressed, she wanted to look good "Why is it so east to get back to old habits" she said to herself
During her breakfast with Johnny, now matter how hard they tried, every once in a while, their conversation would get a little bit awkward which got them both even more confused, but they were happy to be hanging out with each other.
"Don't you have to work today?" Sharna asked
"Do you really want me to leave that much?" he laughed
"Of course not" she grabbed his hand from in front of her at the table then pulled away fast "I'm really glad that we can still hangout"
"Me too, but you're right I'll be needing to go to the hospital soon"
He ordered the cheque, then they walked outside to his car. "I can drive you to Emily's if you want" he said
"No thanks, I'd rather walk, I've been really lazy for the past couple of days"
"Okay, goodbye then" he kissed her on her forehead
"What was that for" Sharna smiled
"I don't know, I just wanted to do it"
"Doesn't mean I didn't like it" she smiled and walked away "Goodbye Johnny"
Sharna kept walking thinking about the mess that she and Johnny have created, but still smiling even though confused about how she feels towards him. "Maybe I need Emily to kick me back to reality" she thought
As she arrived home, she found Emily cooking in the kitchen then she called her.
"Sharna, your mysterious costumer left another letter"
"Where is it?" Sharna ran to the kitchen and Emily pointed towards the table and read the letter "I think my brother was murdered and I think his wife did it. Call me on the number at the back" she turned the paper and there was a number.
"Will you call it?"
"Yes, but I need to talk to you first," she was silent for a moment "about Johnny"
Emily turned around and left what she was doing "What about him?"
Sharna told her everything and Emily looked sympathetic "It's normal, that's one of the steps of any breakup, you'll always wanna go back and then you'll relive your honeymoon phase again then soon enough you'll remember the reason for the breakup and it'll get even messier"
"I know, and I try to not think about him, but I don't know what to do?" she held her face between her hands
"You move forward. Ask him to give you some space and call your new client, that will get you busy and soon enough you'll realize you don't miss him as much, but right now, you'll help me with dinner, your last dinner before moving out"
"I'm gonna miss you wise Yoda" Sharna smiled at her
