Chapter 7

The next morning, Ryan woke up to a stream of light coming in through the window. With a groan, he looked up to see Brendon looking out the window with a cheap hotel cup in his hand. Ryan sat up, running a lazy hand through his messy bedhead. He kept his eye on Brendon.

The other man looked lost in thought, occasionally taking a drink from his cup and grimacing from the bitter taste. Brendon was slouched, focused outside. He didn't even bother to put on his contacts yet, wearing the same black glasses he wore at the airport. Ryan didn't notice the small smile on his own face when he looked at the other in his rumpled pj bottoms, oversized shirt and hair messily sticking out in every direction as if he just got out of bed.

"Morning." Ryan's voice was deep and laced with sleep. Brendon turned his head quickly. Ryan was squinting slightly at the light coming into the room. Brendon got up and shutting the curtain mumbling a soft 'sorry'. "It's fine." Ryan yawned and stretched before looking back at Brendon. "What time is it?" Brendon looked down at his phone.

"Almost 11." Ryan's eyes went wide.

"11?" Brendon nodded. Ryan hadn't slept passed eight thirty since he was in high school.

"You looked peaceful sleeping. I didn't want to wake you." Ryan climbed out of bed and went to the bathroom. After brushing his teeth, he came back out and saw Brendon drumming his drink down the sink.

"What are you doing?" Ryan asked curiously.

"The coffee's crap here," Brendon said as he placed the cup on the counter. He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "So, where are do you want to go?"

"What?" Ryan looked at Brendon confused.

"For the case. Where do you wanna go?"

"Oh, right." Ryan had his eyes on the empty cup on the counter. Brendon was looking down, occasionally glancing up at Ryan, waiting for his answer. "Let's go get you a decent cup of coffee at the diner down the street," Ryan finally responded, looking up at his partner. Brendon smiled shyly.

"Okay." The partners got ready and headed to a small diner a couple blocks from the hotel. The two took a seat in an empty booth near the corner. They didn't have to wait long for a waiter to come up and serve them.

"Good morning. My name is Adam and I'll be your waiter today." Adam placed two menus in front of Brendon and Ryan. "Can I start you off with something to drink?"

"We'll have two coffees please." Adam nodded and walked off. Ryan turned his attention to Brendon who had his head down as he flipped through his menu. Ryan noticed the way his partner was nervously bending the corner of his menu.

"You alright?" Brendon looked up, seemingly pulled out of his thoughts. Ryan realized that was the second time today he was lost somewhere else.

"Mmhm," Brendon replied as he went back to his menu. Ryan watched him suspiciously. Brendon glanced up when he felt Ryan's eyes. He sighed and dropped his gaze to the table. "I'm sorry."

Ryan tilted his head in confusion. What did he have to be sorry about? The day just started. He didn't have to wait long for an answer.

"About yesterday. I didn't mean to upset you." Ryan was still staring at Brendon with concern. He had gotten over that conversation last night. "I shouldn't have kept pushing you."

Brendon started picking at the skin around his nails as he chewed on his bottom lip. He made sure to keep his eyes trained on the menu, not even reading what was on it.

"Urie," Ryan spoke softly.

"I'm sorry," Brendon apologized again. Ryan reached over and put a hand over Brendon's. Brendon hesitantly looked up.

"It's okay." Brendon was still biting his lip. "I'm not upset with you. You can relax." Brendon nodded slowly. "Good. Now, let's have some breakfast."

Ryan saw Brendon's tense shoulders relax as a small smile spread over his face. Adam came back and set the cups of coffee in front of the men and pulled out a small notepad from his apron.

"Are you ready to order or would you like some more time to decide?" Ryan looked at Brendon who nodded.

"I think we're ready. I would like the breakfast platter and white toast please," Ryan said as he closed his menu. Adam nodded and turned to Brendon.

"Could I have the pancake stack, extra whipped cream and a side of eggs and hash brown." Adam nodded again as he scribbled down the order.

"Both eggs scrambled?" The pair nodded. "Alright, I'll get that order right in for you." Adam took the menus and walked off. Ryan turned to Brendon with a smirk.

"What?" Brendon questioned.

"Extra whipped cream?" Ryan teased. Brendon ducked his head as his face heated.

"I've gotten extra since I was a little kid." Ryan gave a small chuckle. "Don't judge. I'm sure you still have habits from when you were younger." Ryan thought for a minute before shaking his head.

"Nope." Brendon shook his head in disbelief, laughing softly.

"Bullshit. Everyone does. It's human nature."

"Not me," Ryan smirked. "I would like to think I kept those bad habits in the passed." Brendon tilted his head to the side.

"Bad habits you say. Oh, Mr. Ross do tell." Brendon propped his head on the palms of his hands as he leaned forward slightly. Ryan laughed at Brendon's posture. He shook his head to which Brendon response with a pout. "Oh c'mon now Ross, you're not gonna be your usual sexy mysterious normal self." Ryan lifted an eyebrow.

"Sexy?" Brendon leaned back in this seat with a blush on his cheeks.

"Don't change the subject. Share at least one thing." Ryan sighed and studied Brendon for a moment. When Brendon continued his constant stare, Ryan sighed.

"Alright fine." Brendon smiled and moved into his previous position. "When I was a teenager, I used to do makeup," Ryan shrugged. Brendon's smile grew.

"Two questions. One: How is that bad? Two: Why?" Ryan chewed his bottom lip thought. When he opened his mouth to respond, another voice stopped him.

"Alright, here is your breakfast platter with white toast and your pancake stack with extra whipped cream and a side of eggs and hash brown. Can I get you anything else?"

"I think we're good for now. Thank you." Ryan smiled.

"Alright fellas, enjoy." Ryan began eating his eggs once the waiter walked away. When he looked over at Brendon, the man was watching him expectingly.

"Yes?" Ryan asked when he swallowed his eggs.

"You were going to answer my questions." Ryan rolled his eyes and grinned.

"The food's here though." Brendon kept on a determined face. He hadn't looked down at his own plate. A small pout formed on his lips as he waited for Ryan to answer. "If I answer, can we eat with no more questions?" Brendon nodded excitedly. Ryan sighed and put his fork down.

"My dad didn't like me doing it. With me being a boy, doing makeup was going against his beliefs. He was trying to accept, but he struggled. I started because my sister didn't know how to do it so I learned so I could do it for her until she wanted me to teach her. It made her happy, so I didn't mind it being a girl thing. I was actually pretty decent at it."

Ryan shrugged as he finished and picked up his fork. Brendon had on a soft smile as he stared at his partner. Ryan continued eating, avoiding Brendon's eyes. He looked up see Brendon just staring at him from his propped position.

"That's so sweet." Ryan rolled his eyes.

"Can we eat now?" Brendon nodded and picked up his own fork. Ryan wanted to be annoyed by Brendon's questions, but he could only smile as Brendon danced his seat as he ate through his pancakes.

Ryan wasn't entirely upset with Brendon's curious manner. He secretly enjoyed going through old memories that he hadn't thought about in a while. Both went through breakfast in a comfortable silence.
