Chapter 5
"What do you mean we only have one room reserved?" Ryan's hands were clenched as he held back his frustration. The lady behind the counter took a small step back, taken aback by Ryan's tone.
"You are booked for a one two bed room." Ryan shook his head.
"It has to be a mistake. The reservation was for two one bed rooms. Could you please check aga-."
"Ryan." He turned to see Brendon standing awkwardly behind him. "Maybe they just booked the wrong thing for us."
"We need two rooms, Urie," Ryan pressed.
"Sir." Ryan turned back to the woman who was already giving an apologetic look. "My screen shows only one room for the week."
"Okay fine," Ryan sighed. "Can I have another room? Price is no issue."
"Ryan, what are you," Brendon stopped his sentence when Ryan shot his a glare.
"Um, sir. We don't have another room available." Ryan ran a hand through his hair in frustration.
"It doesn't have to be near the original. I'll take anything."
"We're are completely booked at the moment." Ryan let out a small groan.
"Okay, okay. Fine. We'll just take that one room." With a nod, the woman began going through the whole check in process. After a minute, she slide the agents two key cards.
"Here are your room keys. I apologize for the inconvenience. Have a nice stay."
"Thanks." Ryan snatched the keys and made his way to the elevators. Brendon quickly followed, making sure to keep silent.
Ryan pulled his phone out at to make a call. Brendon watched him from the corner of his eye. Ryan was stiff, his lip turned down in a frown. The phone was held tightly against his ear. A familiar voice finally sounded from the other end of the call.
"Chief, what the hell?" Ryan didn't hesitated to let out.
"Ross. You're at the hotel I assume." Ryan exited the elevator and moved down the hall.
"There was something wrong with the reservation." He stopped in front of the door that matched the number on the key card.
"What do you mean?" Ryan could tell that the chief wasn't surprised about the call based off his calm tone.
"We got two beds." Ryan made his way to the room and dropped his bag on one of the beds. "I was under the impression that we would have two rooms." He could feel the chief shrug.
"Well, just use this mix up as a chance to get to know your partner. It's your first case with someone. Make the most of the situation."
"Chief," Ryan sighed.
"That's an order, Ross." Before Ryan could respond, the line went dead. Ryan pulled the phone away from his ear and looked at the call ended screen. He tossed his phone on the bed and let his body fall onto the mattress.
He didn't sit up until he heard the sound of hesitant steps moving across the room. Brendon gently set his bag onto the empty bed. He kept his head low as he stood awkwardly.
"I-I'm sorry," he whispered. Ryan furrowed his eyebrows.
"What are you sorry for?" Brendon was still looking down, nervously playing with his fingers.
"Cause I.. the rooms and reservations.. well they," he sighed, not finishing his sentence. "I'm sorry we have to share a room." He peaked up and gave Ryan an apologetic smile. Ryan shook his head.
"It's not your fault. You're just doing your job." Brendon chewed on his bottom lip, eyes everywhere but Ryan. "We can't do anything about it now."
Brendon nodded slowly. He sat down at the edge of the bed. His knees were bouncing quickly and his eyes were moving around the room. Ryan kept his eyes on Brendon, wondering what was making him so fidgety.
Brendon turned, locking eyes with Ryan for a second. He turned away quickly when he felt his cheeks heat up. Ryan let himself smile at Brendon's nervousness.
"Ryan," Brendon's voice was stronger than Ryan would've expected.
"Yeah?" It was a while before Brendon spoke up again.
"Why do you work alone?" Ryan tilted his head to the side.
"Work alone," he repeated in amusement. "Why are you asking?" Brendon shrugged and looked back up at him.
"You never have partners and only do solo cases. When checking in, you looked like you were ready to blow up on the receptionist when she told you we had to room together. Do you just like being alone or something?" Ryan smirked and shook his head subtly.
"Or something," he said in a barely audible voice. He ran a hand through his hair, studying Brendon. The man was giving Ryan all his attention, giving him all the time he could ask for to answer. With a sigh, Ryan finally responded.
"I'm used to being on my own. I learned not to count on anyone else but myself. I just don't really need anyone," he finished with a shrug. Brendon nodded, looking away from a moment.
"Is there anything I can do to help you not feel like you have to be alone?" Ryan's smile slipped from his face.
He let his eyes linger on Brendon. The man seemed to be giving soft, puppy dog eyes. He looked so innocent, which Ryan knew wasn't true due to their line of work. He pictured Brendon in the same position as the children in the cases he worked and it brought the protective side out of him. He didn't want anything to ruin that faux innocence.
"Ryan?" Brendon's voice snapped Ryan out of his thoughts. Ryan could see Brendon as he was, an adult, an agent, fully capable of protecting himself. That didn't stop a part of him from wanting to keep Brendon safe from the dangerous world he knew was outside the door. "Are you alright?" Ryan nodded, staying silent for a moment.
"Yeah." He shook his head and let out a small chuckle. "Let's just start working on the case." Brendon nodded and pulled out the case file. He moved over and sat beside Ryan. He kept his eyes on the folder in front of them unaware of the older one's eyes stuck on him. Ryan let mind wonder to his partner and why he felt the need to protect him. A part of him had an idea but the other part didn't want to voice it.
