Chapter 2: When Melody Met Pinky (And The Brain)
(After the Dance.)
Carrie decided to try and get to know Melody more. She hadn't seen them before at all, they were.. different to her. Not in a bad way different, oh no. She acted like them before everything. Lost. Alone, and unsure of what to do with herself. Carrie picked Melody up and the two of them walked back to ACME Labs. "Melody, how come I never saw you with Pinky and Brain until now? Why must you decide to keep your identity away? The people would love you and some might relate to you." Melody hid her face away. "I don't know Mrs. Nelson. I was always the odd mice out. I was tossed around from house to house as a pet. Those owners never loved me cause I was born blind."
(Flashback: 1998.)
A little girl was having a birthday party and her family led her to her last present. "Go ahead and open it up sweetie." Her mother chirped with a soft tone. The girl opened up the present which was a cage with a young Melody inside. "Oh she's so pretty. Her coat is so soft!" "Yes Holly. Her name is Melody." The father pats her head and Holly stares at her. "Oh Melody.." She sees that their eyes were blank. "Uh.. I think Melody is blind." Holly looked back to her parents as they looked closer at the mouse. "You're right. Look at her eyes love." Her mother spoke and then her father began to think about what to do with her. "I'm sure we can make this work. Hopefully."
But it didn't work. Not one bit. Melody wasn't sure where to go, what to do, only following by her senses minus her sight.. Melody was tossed from the pet shop to another house. Then back to the pet shop again and to another owner. It was repeat on repeat. Their last owner gave up on her after hearing about how many times they were brought back. While looking around for a good owner to take care of her, the last owner she had saw a poster that if you have a pet you want to donate to ACME Labs, you'll get paid for it. And that's exactly what he did. The Owner brought them there and gave Melody to the scientists.
Melody looked around with a smile on her face. Was she with another owner who might love them? Would they be cared for unlike the rest? Those answers were completely wrong. Melody had gotten the worst torture out of the test subjects. Shocks, beauty products, cigarettes, the list went on. One faithful day, a scientist walked into her little area and Melody curled into a ball, shaking and she looked so scared. She didn't know if she could trust people at all. "Oh no. I'm not here to hurt you sweetie. Oh no no no. I made these for you myself. I hope these make you feel better." He puts the tiny pair of glasses he carefully made himself on Melody. "There. Now you look so adorable in these. Here sweetie.." He also gave Melody some cheese for her good behavior and she nibbled at it.
(End of flashback.)
"Oh god, that sounds terrible." Carrie gasped as they finally made it to ACME Labs. Melody looked up at the doors and they hopped out of Carrie's hand. "Well this is my stop. Thanks for talking to me Carrie. I really needed to talk out my feelings." Melody scurried inside and through the halls of the lab before she finally made her way into the area with Pinky and Brain. "Oh there you are Melody. Narf!" Pinky grinned and brought them up. "Took you long enough." Brain went to the chalkboard. "Now we should get prepared for tomorrow's plan to try and take.. Ah you know what? Forget it. The world can wait for the day." Brain sighs, passing it off.. for now. Melody sat down in the cage, thinking about how she met them.
(Flashback: December 31st, 2020.)
Melody was sitting alone in their cage, having some more cheese from their pile for good behavior during small testing. She then hears the door open and follows the noise, going to the front of the cage. It was the scientist who took pity upon them. "Hey there sweetie. I think it's time you had some new friends, hmm?" He takes her into his hand and wrapped her in a small blanket designed just for her. They walked for a while, him giving Melody small pets until they reached the room where Pinky and Brain were inside. The scientist sets Melody in the cage and she sniffed his hand. "Don't worry sweetie, you're going to love your new friends here. It's time for me to go home. Celebrate New Years with my family." He walked out the doors and Melody heard them shut.
Pinky looked at the new mouse among them. "Egad! Hello there new mouse. I'm Pinky and this here is Brain, right next to me. Poit!" Brain shakes his head. "Yes, and who must you be to come into our cage like this?" He asked Melody, getting a little suspicious of them. Melody turned to listen to their voices and They gave a soft smile. "Hello Pinky.. Hello Brain.. I'm Melody. I bet you look as sweet as you sound." She gave a small little laugh, but she wasn't really feeling that happy at the moment. Pinky takes their glasses for a moment and sees the clear, grey eyes. No Iris, no pupil, nothing. Nothing was there.
Melody gasped and takes them back from him. "Give them back." She struggled to put them back on for a moment and she sat back down. "Melody.. Were you made like this..?" Brain asked, getting a bit closer to them. Melody sighed and nodded at Brain's question. "Yes.. I was born blind.. No owner wanted me.. Nobody would ever want a blind mouse as a pet. I was brought here a long time ago. I only trust the scientist that takes care of me when no one else is around.." Pinky got out some of the presents that he got for Christmas and described them to her, trying to warm her up. "What about you? What do you wish for the new year, Melody? Zort!" Pinky asked them with a happy attitude and Melody laid on her mouse belly, holding onto the cage bars.
"All I want.. Is for an owner who will love me.. for me." Melody sighs and their eyes blinked, letting out a few tears as a melody played onward. "It's hard to remember.. A summer or winter.. When they haven't been there for me! A friend and companion, I can always depend on. One owner.. That's who I mean." Melody sang as she let out more tears. Pinky and Brain listened to the song, sitting down. "Been taken for granted.. seeds that they planted. They're always behind everything! A teacher, a seeker.. A both arms out-reacher. One owner.. That's who I mean."
Melody then began to vision a world where they weren't blind at all. One where she had an owner that loved her. Just the way she was. "Wish I would slow down The hands of time. To keep things the way they are. If they said so, I would give them the world! If I could... I would." Pinky started to cry and Brain was trying his best to hold back his own tears. "My love and my laughter! From here ever after! Is all that they say that they need.. A friend and companion, I can always depend on. One owner.. That's who I mean... One owner.. That's who I mean... that's who I mean.."
Pinky blew into a tissue and Brain finally let's out a tear of his own. "I'm.. I'm sorry that the world hasn't been treating you the way it should, Melody.." He placed one of his mouse paws on her little shoulder. "I guess.. you can stay with us." Pinky nodded and puts them in the wheel. "Here. Take this. You deserve some comfort. Narf!" Melody listened to the countdown that played from the tv as she slept. She hoped for the day where someone would take her home as their very own. It didn't matter who. Tall, short. Fat or thin. Ugly or pretty. Didn't matter if they were white, black, purple, or yellow. it didn't matter to her. Just someone who cared for them. And listened to them.
