Chapter 3

We watch, from the top of the halted ferris wheel, as he hunches over some more wires. One by one, small lights go off around the carnival. First it's just a few lights from some signs, then a few booths go out. The sun setting makes it easier for us to notice and we can see a few people starting to suspect something.

"This guy is trying to start shit! We have to warn one of the security guards!" Maggie whispers angrily.

We search for some in the vicinity so we can alert them of the lights and the strange men.

"There are some! Wait...why are they just standing there? It's...it's almost like they're guarding him..." Robyn points out.

Sure enough two security guards are standing in front of the entrance, passively watching the crowd. The guy keeps cutting wires as more and more lights go off. People are starting to notice and are starting to freak out.

The carousel starts moving again and we keep circling. We stop to pick up another passenger and we are barely above the top of the booth but we can can still see the strange man.

"Dude what the fuck are you doing?" Maggie yells.

"Babe! Don't say anything! He could be dangerous!" Robyn hisses angrily, gently nudging her and sinking lower in her seat.

The guy seems to have heard us and turns to face us. We still can't see anything under the hoody but I swear I can see him flashing us an eerily white toothy grin. He keeps looking in our general direction flashing us one last smile as we keep spinning. We reach the top and we stop again. This time though the view is different, like night and day because now almost all the lights in the carnival have gone dark. People are screaming and panicking now and there's a big crowd moving towards the exits.

Just then gun shots are fired in the air. We duck covering each others heads out of fear as we hear people screaming and watch the chaos insue. I take out my phone to call 911 but of course their lines are blocked because apparently I'm not the only one.

I start breathing quickly and look at Jordan and Jessie who shoot us a 'stay down' look.

The gunshots stop and I peek at the crowd. People are yelling even louder making it hard for anyone to locate the source of the shots. I can see Jordan covering Jessie with his body as we stop for what I'm guessing is the final time because he probably cut our ride's power too. We stop at the same spot as before and I no longer see the man or the security guards. I carefully survey the mayhem and realise that I don't see any security guards at all.

I can barely hear myself think amongst all the yells from the people around. I spot a small child near the lemonade booth crying and clutching a  text bear that he probably won from one of the games. I see another man yelling a woman's name, who I'm assuming is his wife or girlfriend and as he looks around he freezes as he looks I to one of the dark alleys and quickly runs away.

What's in that alley?

I try to peer over to it but the booths are too high and our passenger car is too low. I try sitting properly to get a better view but Maggie quickly pulls the back of my shirt urging me to stay in my crouched position. I hear whimpers and see that Robyn's crying. Maggie whispers something in her ear and that helps her calm down. I'd love some comfort right now too.
