Rest

Schneep woke up to the sound of a door opening and closing, the German sitting at his desk in his operation room with a blanket draped over his shoulders and his head laying on his arms.

"Zhe fuck happened last night?" Schneep mumbled sleepily to himself as he straightened his back, wincing as pain shot through it due to his sleeping position.

The German looked down at his desk and noticed a note on it with a bagel and cup of coffee nearby, moving his stiff arms to read the note.

"I thought you vent home, but I came in here to borrow one of your tools and found you at your desk asleep. After you eat breakfast, take zhe day off. Don't vorry about your shift zhis afternoon, I'm taking it for you. Your friend, Doctor Iplier." Schneep read aloud.

"Zhe mieze!" Schneep remembered abruptly, shooting out of his chair and wildly looking around the room.

Schneep paused when he heard a noise emanate from under his desk, the German bending down to see the cat curled up under his desk with its front right paw, back right paw, and tail wrapped in bandages.

"Ah, guten morgen mein mieze." Schneep cooed softly, extending his hand towards the cat.

"Ow!" Schneep cried out, the cat biting his hand with a hiss before it huddled deeper into the corner away from Schneep.

"Henrik? Why the hell are you here?"

Schneep turned to see Doctor Iplier enter the room, his arms folded across his chest with a disapproving look as Schneep stood up.

"I-"

"What did you do to your hand?" Doctor Iplier interrupted, carefully taking Schneep's hand in his and examining the steadily bleeding wound.

Schneep was saved from answering when a nurse poked her head in the room, Doctor Iplier letting out a long sigh as he followed her out.

Schneep held his injured hand close to his chest as he looked for bandages, settling on a neon green bandaid out of his stash of band aids he used for the occasional kid that visited him.

"You should have a name, even if you are evil." Schneep mused as he watched the cat slowly limp out of its hiding spot.

"Vhat about Zauber since it's magic that you didn't die?" Schneep wondered aloud with a tinge of sarcasm in his voice, the cat meowing in response.

"Vonderful, I vill take zhat as a yes." Schneep replied, sitting down at his desk to eat his breakfast.

Zauber circled around Schneep's legs and kept meowing, eventually resorting to digging their claws into the German's leg.

Schneep let out a pained cry as he dropped the bagel, Zauber happily munching on the food while they sat on their haunches.

"I should've named you Zhis Motherfucker or Dämon instead." Schneep grumbled as he stood up, Zauber freezing mid bite to look at the German and meow loudly.

"Okay, if you keep being a pain in mein arsch, I vill take you to a shelter." Schneep threatened, shaking his head as he picked up the bagel and threw it away before picking up his coffee.

"Doctor Schneeplestien, I thought Doctor Iplier was taking your shift today."

Schneep turned to see the same nurse Doctor Iplier had followed now standing in his doorway, Zauber slinking out of sight.

"Vhat time is it?" Schneep yawned, downing his coffee as if it was oxygen before setting the cup back down on his desk.

"It's a bit past noon, there's an ambulance on the way with a patient that needs a liver surgery." The nurse informed Schneep patiently.

"I vill take care of zhem." Schneep answered wearily, shoving his hands into the pockets of his lab coat as the nurse walked off.

"Zauber? Vhere are you?" Schneep hissed once the nurse was out of ear shot, the German spotting them rushing out the door through the corner of his eye.

"Schiesse." Schneep muttered, darting out the door and nearly running into a stretcher with a patient lying on it.

"Here's your liver surgery patient." The nurse stated, Schneep wheeling the patient into his operation room.

"I fucking hate cats." Schneep growled as he got to work, part of him worrying about Zauber as he thought of how many dangerous items that were in the hospital that could kill them.

After Schneep took care of three surgeries, he finally escaped his room to look for Zauber while hopefully not looking too suspicious.

"If I vas an injured cat, vhere vould I go?" Schneep whispered thoughtfully under his breath, walking towards the receptionist's desk to look at the cameras.

"Apparently out of zhe fucking hospital." Schneep spat sourly, watching Zauber in the parking garage camera limp out of sight without being spotted.

"Vhatever, not my problem anymore zhen." Schneep huffed angrily, storming out to his car and leaving the hospital.

The German ignored the growling of his stomach as he got into his car and started the drive home, rain battering his windshield.

"Vhy did I agree to transfer to Brighton anyvay? I should have stayed in Germany!" Schneep snapped, feeling drained emotionally and physically as he flipped on his windshield wipers and listened to the rain hit his roof.

"First, breakfast. Second, get some decent fucking sleep." Schneep listed off as he arrived home.

The German shivered as the cold rain soaked into his clothes while he walked towards his house, opening the door to find everything a mess.

"I thought I cleaned my house before vork yesterday...I guess not." Schneep yawned, taking a protein shake out of his fridge and twisting the lid off.

Schneep drank the protein shake as he walked towards his bedroom, the German pausing when he noticed drops of dried blood on the floor.

"Zhat is odd..." Schneep trailed off, finishing his shake before going into the bathroom to get a rag to clean up the blood.

Schneep grabbed an old rag out of his bathroom closet before he looked into the mirror, the eyes looking back at him not his own color.

The eyes looking back at him were pitch black.

"Schiesse!" Schneep yelled in surprise, staggering back and nearly falling into the bath tub behind him.

The German took several deep breathes before he looked into the mirror once more, his reflection appearing normal.

The dark bags under his eyes were the same, as well as the tired look in his ice blue eyes and his unkept facial hair.

"I really need sleep." Schneep reasoned, trudging out of the bathroom and into his bedroom, tossing the rag aside.

Schneep removed his lab coat before collapsing onto his bed, his face buried into his pillow as he drifted off to sleep.

"Goodnight Doctor Henrik Von Schneeplestien, sweet dreams."
