Back to Square One

Wolf's steps were much slower going back down the trail. She kept her head down and arms wrapped tightly around herself. She'd been disappointed before, but what she's just seen was the worst disappointment ever. She felt like her heart had sunk to her feet, making her plod through the snow.

"Chere?" Remy asked after several hours of silence.

"It's nothing, LeBeau," Wolf sniffed. "I'll just have to start over. Find more clues."

"You're disappointed. Dat ain't hard ta see. Ya wanna talk?"

"What's talking going to do? It's not going to change the fact that I can't remember a freakin' thing, and it's not going to help me find more clues."

"But it might help ya feel better."

She huffed and kept trekking along the trail.

"Petite, stop."

Wolf turned, seeing LeBeau sitting on a rock next to the trail. "What are you doing?"

"I ain't movin' 'til ya decide ta talk."

Wolf gave him a mock salute. "Okay, then. Good luck getting down the trail without me."

"Ya ain't gonna leave me stranded."

"Watch me."

Wolf began walking, then stopped. She couldn't force herself forward. Her feet wouldn't move.

Behind her, Remy chuckled. "Ya can't bluff, mon ami. Dat's your problem."

"What if I had been bluffing?" Wolf spread Remy's coat underneath her and sat down on it.

"Ya weren't. And I knew it. Years of playin' poker has taught me lots of things. And knowin' when someone's bluffin' is one of dem." He straightened, then laced his fingers together in his lap. "So, what's on your mind, petite?"

"You're despicable, you know that?" She shot him a death glare, then sighed. "I thought this would finally be it. I thought I would finally have my answers. Sixteen years, Remy. I'm eighteen years old, and I'm missing sixteen years of my life. Why? Where did I lose my memory? What happened? I thought that place would hold the key to unlocking my past. But no. That place only made me ask more questions." She heaved another sigh and dropped her head into her hands. "And now I don't know where to go."

"Chere, you'll figure it out. You're smart, ya got friends who'll help ya. I know ya can do dis. Even if it take long den ya thought."

"But I'm right back where I started. Where am I supposed to go from here?"

"Forward, ma chérie, dat's where. Dat's all ya can do. Jus' keep movin'. Don't look back."

Wolf picked her head up, looking at Remy through misty eyes. He was full of surprises. She never would've thought he would be a friend, a shoulder to lean on, a person she could trust. But here she was, holding back tears, talking to this man like she'd known him forever.

"Dry your eyes, mon ami," he said as he laid a gentle hand on her shoulder. "Dere's a lot worse out dere, and it's gonna be hard ta keep goin' if ya let dis stop ya."

Wolf wiped her eyes dry, then gave Remy a long look. "Why did I ever hate you?"

Remy laughed. "Didn't know ya hated me, mon ami. Was I dat annoyin'?"

"Worse."

He chuckled one last time, then stood up. He reached his hand to her, and she took it. Once he pulled her to her feet, she grabbed his coat and slipped it back onto her shoulders.

"You sure you don't want this?"

He shrugged. "I'm fine, petite. Don't worry."

They started walking side-by-side, Remy's arm over her shoulders for the first few steps. Wolf was surprised with herself. She rarely liked being touched, and for Remy to walk with her like this should be bothered her. But it didn't. She welcomed it.

But when he let his hand fall back to his side, Wolf didn't mind. She readjusted the trench coat, then tucked her hands under her arms.

"Where will ya go when we get back inta town?" Remy asked, breaking the silence.

"Head back to the States, probably. Back home, where I need to be. What about you?"

"Still got business up here ta take care of. Den I'll be on my way."

"You know, if you're ever in New York, look me up, huh? Shouldn't be too hard to find me. Not many girls named 'Wolf,' after all."

Remy chuckled. "Same for ya, mon ami. If ya ever find yourself in N'awlins, stop by."

"Will do, Remy."

A/N: So this story is about to wrap up! I've had a lot of fun writing it, and I hope y'all are still enjoying it! It's a little bittersweet to wrap this up, but every story has to end. But Wolf still had many adventures ahead of her, as you will see in my new story, "One Wolf's Journey." I hope y'all will read that one, too. Who knows? Maybe she and Gambit will have a little reunion in that story.
