IV. FAVOURITE HERO
CHAPTER FOUR

Peter Parker lost his Maia before he lost his Gwen. He remembers that day almost vividly, it played out in his mind whenever he visited her grave.
When he first became Spider-man, he was reckless and an idiot. She was just a kid, yet he tried acting like a grown up. He had lost Ben, first, Maia and May had lost Ben as well and it was all this fault.
He still remembers that funeral and how upset Maia and May were.
A few months later, he lost Maia.
He was fighting Dr Connors. It was a messy fight. The school building was practically in wreckage He just didn't expect anyone to be caught in the wreckage. He assumed maybe Gwen had grabbed Maia, they were together when all this happened though Peter should've suspected Maia to have been stubborn.
She was always stubborn.
What he didn't expect was Gwen to also help.
He webbed Gwen out to safety, but Maia was still there.
And soon, she wasn't there.
There was so much rubble everywhere. He looked around eerily, his heart dropping when he saw a single pale hand hanging out of the debris.
Maia.
It was Maia.
He immediately ran to the spot she was buried. His hands screamed as he removed as much debris as he could, though that didn't stop him. There she was, pale, crying, injured. His Maia. His baby sister. She was hurt and it was his fault. All his fault.
"Maia!" Peter cried out, dropping to his knees when he spotted Maia on the ground, sobbing as she tried pulling herself out of the rubble. This was all his fault. Peter couldn't breathe properly, his heart was hammering in his chest and he was shaking like mad. "Shit! Maia! Someone help!"
"Peter?" Maia whispered, going so quiet for a moment. He was still in his suit, he was still Spider-man. Yet to Maia, he was big brother Peter. That's it. "Peter?"
"Hey, hey," Peter whispered back, taking her bloody hand and giving it a squeeze. She squeezed back. "You're okay, you're okay."
"Peter," Maia mumbled lethargically, her eyes glossed over with tears and her heart hammering in her chest. Peter could hear how delayed her heart and breathing was. "Peter, calm down." She went and squeezed his hand, making him look at her pale figure. "Peter, you're crying." Maia looked down at where her stomach was. "What— why—"
Peter hushed her. "Mai, shh, it's okay, it's okay." He smiled, hoping she'd feel safer. "I'm here, Peter's here." He brushed away some hair and leaned down and kissed her forehead gently. He watched her wince. "Okay, okay, I'm gonna move this off you, gradually. Okay?"
Maia looked at him, her lips quivering. "Okay." Peter moved down and reached towards the piece of debris that laid on her torso. He grabbed onto it and she immediately winded, "It—It hurts." Maia cried softly. "Why does it hurt?"
He stopped for a moment, shaking his head at her as tears fell down her cheeks. "You'll be fine." Peter repeated softly, trying to move forward and pull off some rubble, though Maia cried out in pain.
Peter knew if he removed the rubble then Maia would die.
Maia would die no matter what. That was that and Peter didn't want it to be that.
"Hey! Maia! Keep your eyes open!" Peter looked around, praying someone would come and help. He watched as her eyes fluttered shut for a moment and then frantically opened, blood falling down her lips. She was crying into his embrace.
She was so scared.
He could see it in her eyes. They were wide and terrified and she looked as though she was regretting so much.
"Somebody, please help!"
"Peter?" Maia whispered gently, confusion so intertwined in her voice as she looked up at her big brother. "You're crying. Please don't cry."
Peter shook his head. His lips were pressed together to hold back his crying. "Mai, please, you'll be okay." He repeated those words moreso for his own reassurance. "You'll be fine."
Maia smiled as best as she could in pain. She was going to be okay. Peter, her hero, was going to save her and she'll be okay. He said so and Peter never lied once to her. "You remember when we'd spend all night awake laughing?"
"Yeah, yeah," he cupped her cheeks, wiping away her tears. "And Uncle Ben would tell us off but we'd pretend to be asleep." He laughed.
Maia, too, laughed, a smile on her face as she breathed more shallowly. "Can we do that again? Order a pizza as well and get chocolates and as much energy drinks as we want?"
Peter shakily nodded his head. "Yeah, yeah, Mai," he held back a sob as he felt her grip loosen slightly, though she tried holding on. "We can binge watch as many movies as we want."
"Even Dirty Dancing?"
Peter sobbed while nodding. "Even Dirty Dancing."
Maia looked to the side, her eyes felt so heavy and she wanted nothing more than to close her eyes. "Peter?"
"Yeah Mai?"
"I love you." She mumbled, smiling as he squeezed her hand. "You really are my favourite hero."
They stayed in silence until Maia's heartbeat stopped. Peter knew, he heard as it stopped. Her eyes were still open and there was a ghost of a smile on her pale face. He cried and screamed but they were too late. His Maia was gone. He lost his little sister and now he was alone.
He couldn't even take her body with him. That's how cruel everything was. He couldn't even bring her body out. He had to abandon her, leave her, all because he was an idiot. He shouldn't have this power. It took things from him, he was a danger and Maia was the first one he had helped kill indirectly.
But Peter stood up. Not for himself; for Maia. He stood because that's what Maia would have wanted. He was her favourite hero, he couldn't let her done. Not now, not after everything.
Peter had to help before more people died.
Maia's death was enough.
